After men landed on the moon in 1969, astronauts around the world had a problem — there were no other places they could go! Even today, the other planets are still too far away for astronauts to fly to. So, while rockets and robots can go to other planets, flights with astronauts have to stay closer to home, at least for the time being.
Therefore, since visiting the manned space programs have turned their attention to solving problems related to living and working in space.
For the past decade, NASA’s manned space exploration program has focused on the space shuttle program. During that time, NASA operated three space shuttles: Discovery Atlantis, and Endeavor. Unfortunately, two of NASA’s shuttles, Challenger and Columbia were lost through accidents.
Seven astronauts died in each accident. While the shuttle program was going on, the shuttles flew over 120 missions. These missions included putting satellites into orbit, photographing the earth, studying space, conducting experiments related to working in space, and connecting with various manned space stations in orbit. Today, however, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor are no longer being flown. NASA retired its space shuttle program in 2011.
As well as putting rockets and space shuttles into orbit, several space stations have been put into orbit. In 1986, the Soviet Union launched the Mir space station. Mir stayed in orbit until March 23,2001. Over that time,104 astronauts visited the station to stay for various lengths of time.
The person who has spent the longest in space so far is Russian astronaut Sergei Krikalev Working aboard Mir and flying in other missions, Mr. Krikalev lived and worked in space for a total of 803 days,9 hours, and 39 minutes. That is more than two years in space.
Another space station, the International Space Station (ISS), is still in orbit today. The first part of this space station was launched in 1998.NASA added the final section to the ISS in 2010, officially completing the space station. In the long run, it is predicted that research done aboard the ISS will help scientists learn about living and working in space.
24.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Sergei Krikalev-An Amazing Astronaut B.The Past and Future of Space Travel
C.Space Cities of the Future D.Living and Working on the International Space Station
25.According to the passage, why are astronauts unable to travel to other planets now?
A.There are not enough space shuttles. B.There have been too many rocket accidents.
C.There are too many problems here on Earth. D.The journey would take too long for a person.
26.How many space shuttle astronauts have been killed in accidents?
A.2. B.7. C.14. D.120.
27.What is NOT true about Sergei Krikaley?
A.He is an astronaut from Russia. B.He spent more than two years aboard Mir.
C.He has been on many space missions. D.He has spent more time in space than anyone else.
C
The term “crop circle” or “circles” was created by a researcher, Colin Andrews, to describe the strange circles and complex geometries(复杂的几何图形). He has researched what has shown up in fields of wheat, barley, rye, corn, soy beans and other crops for years.
There are numerous theories(理论)that have been given to explain crop circles of unknown origin(起源). It is notable for most people that when crop circles have been made by human hands, the plants themselves are damaged. But the plants in the stricken area continue to grow and ripen, and none of the stalks are broken nor the seed heads crushed.
Another strange thing about these particular types of crop circles is that the genetic(基因的)structure of the plants themselves has been changed. This does not happen to the crop circles that have proven to be the work of pranksters (玩恶作剧的人).
In 1966, in the small town of Tully Queensland, Australia, one of the most famous accounts of a UFO, as well as the possible link to crop circles, was given. A farmer was working on his farm and said that he saw a saucer-shaped craft (飞行器)fly 30 or 40 feet above a swamp (沼泽地)and then fly away at extremely high speed. The farmer decided to look into the area where he thought the craft had been hovering (盘旋)and he found the plants there intricately woven (杂乱地编织) in a clockwise pattern.
The crop circle phenomenon (现象)became a very hot topic during the late 1980s. No less than 12,000 genuine crop circles have been discovered all cross the world. In countries like the former Soviet Union, the UK, Japan, the U. S. and Canada, this strange phenomenon continues to appear and baffle anyone who observes it because no rational explanation exists. In a wheat field in Monroe County, Tennessee, a pattern ranging about 150 feet in diameter(直径)was discovered on May14, 2007. Captain Bryan Graves of the local sheriff’s department discovered it while flying.
The crop circle phenomenon has never stopped appearing across the world since it was discovered. Could it be that extraterrestrial (来自天外的)beings are trying to communicate with humans? If so, what is the message they are trying to send? The mystery continues.
28.When it comes to crop circles, most people think ________.
A.Colin Andrews’ study deserves to be believed B.its appearance has no relationship to humans
C.plants in the crop circle are easily damaged D.the phenomenon has only appeared in wheat field
29.What did the farmer mentioned in Paragraph 4 think of the crop circle?
A.He thought it must be the work of pranksters.
B.The crop circle could change plants genes.
C.He believed the crop circle was made by a UFO.
D.Crop circles would be popular among Australians.
30.The underlined world “baffle” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A.confuse B.excite C.upset D.satisfy
31.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.Bryan Graves plans to study extraterrestrial beings.
B.Crop circles have continued to appear in the world.
C.Crop circles are unlikely to be created by extraterrestrial beings.
D.Humans can’t translate what extraterrestrial beings express.

Believe it or not, humans have been in debt to Earth Overshoot Day this month. Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 8th. As of that day, we had used as much from nature in 2016 as our planet can provide in a whole year. In other words, we have run out of this year's “ecological budget”, and for the rest of the year we'll be eating into our “savings”.
Global Footprint Network has been watching Earth Overshoot Day since 1971. This year, the day came five days earlier than it did last year (Aug.13th), 11 days earlier than the year before last year(Aug.19th) and is the earliest date yet.
Global Footprint Network said that humans now use 1.6 Earths' worth of crops, forest, livestock, energy and other resources every year. By the 2030s we will be using more than two Earths' worth of resources every year. The situation is more and more serious and the world needs to find a better balance in how to use the Earth's resources.
Overshoot Day is a red light warning of trouble ahead. “That is, we're using up what our planet does for us, so year after year, there is less for us to use, ” Stuart Pimm, an American professor of ecology, explained. “Less forest, fewer fish in the ocean, and less productive land.” Two of the main causes are overpopulation and pollution.
Small actions make a big difference and all of us play an important role in creating a better world where we live. Even a few simple changes around our home can reduce waste, from taking a shower instead of a bath to using our own reusable bags at a store instead of ones that are made of plastics. In this way we can reduce waste and pollution. Let's start today to live greener in no time.
32.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Earth Overshoot Day is coming earlier and earlier.
B.Earth Overshoot Day falls on Aug.19th.
C.Humans will have to spend more money for the rest of the year.
D.Humans have used as many resources this year as we did last year.
33.According to Global Footprint Network, which of the following is TRUE?
A.By the 2030s there will be no resources left on Earth.
B.Humans need to find better ways to use resources properly.
C.Humans use more than 1.6 Earths' worth of resources every year.
D.Aug. 13th is the earliest date of Earth Overshoot Day since 1971.
34.Which one can't help us reduce waste?
A.Taking a shower. B.Taking a bath.
C.Using reusable bags. D.Recycling waste water.
35.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Living a Saving Life B.Aug.8th—an Important Day
C.Small Actions Make a Big Difference D.Eating up Our Planet

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It seemed I’d done everything I’d ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret. I was born in 1898, the oldest of five kids. Papa couldn’t spare me to go to school, so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.
Everywhere I went, I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can’t read the alphabet. People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.
By 1928, I’d been wandering for nine years. I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school, I took my wife aside. “Elzenia,” I said. “I don’t want the kids to know I can’t read or write.”
In 1938, one day my boss called me in. “George,” he said. “No one knows those machines like you do. I’d like to promote you.” But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said, “Fill out this application and we’ll get you a raise.” I couldn’t admit the truth. I thanked him and walked out of his office. I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn’t stop working. For the next 25 years, I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.
A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It’s information about adult education classes. People can learn to read and write. Now I’m 102. I thought of my friends and neighbours and what they might think if they found out I couldn’t read. After all these years, my secret would be out. But all my life I’ve wanted to read. It was high time for action.
