Amsterdam Destination Guide
Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit there are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city’s museums, including the Jewish Historical Museum, the Scheepvaart Museum and the botanical gardens.
Money Saving Tips
◆Unless you really want to see the tulips (郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
◆Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
◆Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
◆Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

In one San Francisco neighborhood, trouble appeared for the newspaper delivery man when his papers started going missing. He started getting calls from upset clients that their paper wasn’t being delivered, but he knew full well he had delivered one to their doorstep. Shortly after the calls began, he discovered something completely unexpected. He watched as the neighborhood coyote (郊狼) played with a newspaper on a grassy hillside. He videoed her throwing the paper in the air, sliding down the hillside on it, and running around with pages. It turns out she was repeatedly stealing papers off certain porches (门廊) shortly after he delivered them, just to play!
It’s common to hear about residents running into conflicts with urban coyotes in America. Usually it’s because of run-ins with pets, or coyotes too close around people in parks or yards. But this time the conflict arises for a more surprising reason.
Rather than getting mad, the delivery man’s solution was to throw out a paper just for her, launching it onto the grassy hillside she frequented (常出入于) before she had a chance to bite one from a front porch. She had her morning toy, and he stayed out of trouble with his clients.
I met the delivery man by chance early one morning while watching the coyote, and I listened to his story. To prove its truth — and maintain the morning ritual (惯例) — the delivery man threw a paper out on the grass. Sure enough, the coyote came running down the hill to play with it.
San Francisco’s coyotes are only just now being studied, and a small population living in the Presidio has been monitored. Many other cities also have new or ongoing studies of urban coyotes. As the clever animals become permanent residents of cities across the continent, learning more about them is a critical step in finding solutions to coexisting with them. For one newspaper man, at least, that coexistence comes at an affordable price: an extra copy of the daily newspaper.
24. What happened to the delivery man?
A He got fewer newspaper orders. B. He got complaints about missing papers.
C. He was attacked by an urban coyote. D. He showed great interest in urban coyotes.
25. What do we know about the coyotes from paragraph 2?
A. They are easy to get close to. B. They often live far from people.
C. They’ve been seen a lot around the city. D. They cause great harm to people.
26. The author describes the delivery man’s behavior to stress ______.
A. his love for his job B. his care for the coyote
C. his trouble brought by the coyote D. his success in solving the problem
27. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A. We should drive the animals out of the city.
B. We should learn to live together with animals.
C. We should train and control animals.
D. We should monitor animals closely.
C
This Friday (Dec.20), Boeing's CTS-100 Starliner spacecraft will make its first trip to the International Space Station(ISS) with its Orbital Flight Test (OFT), a major step toward Starliner eventually carrying humans to space in the commercial vehicle. And to ensure the safety of these future space travelers, Boeing is sending along a special, inhuman passenger aboard Starliner with the OFT---Rosie the Astronaut, nicknamed "Rosie the Rocketeer" by some people.
Rosie is actually an Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD), or a flight test dummy(人体模型),but she serves as an unbelievable purpose. She is equipped with sensors that will monitor, measure and track critical data points, including the gravity forces that Rosie experiences during the trip. Most of the sensors are placed around the base of the skull(颅骨), the neck and the base of the spine(脊椎), according to Josh Barrett, the CST-100 Starliner Communications Specialist at Boeing. These sensors will provide his teams back on earth with critical data about what human astronauts might experience during their flights. This will be necessary to ensure the safety of the future Starliner flights.
This "astronaut" will fly to the space station in the Starliner's commander seat. Though the seat will be similar to the one for future astronauts, the seats that human astronauts will use will have 3D-printed inserts. Rosie's spacesuit will also be very similar to what human crew members will wear.
Rosie was named after a worker of the 20th century, Rosie the Riveter, who became famous for the "We Can Do It" poster, which featured Rosie as a factory worker. Rosie the Riveter became a role model for working women during World War II and still inspire women today.
“Rosie was named by Leanne Caret, president of Boeing's Defense, Space & Security division, who hopes that the spacefaring Rosie will encourage women to join the aerospace workforce, ” Barrett said. “Rosie is a symbol of not only a symbol of the women who are playing a part in human spaceflight history, but also of whoever is working tirelessly to ensure the future astronauts’ safety," said Caret. “She’s flying for everyone on our team who takes on the challenge of human spaceflight and we can do it.”
28. How do scientists know very important data about future manned space flights?
A. By sending along several small robots.
B. By equipping Roise with many sensors.
C. By putting an animal on the spacecraft.
D. By monitoring the spacecraft through telescopes.
29. Why did Leanne Caret name Rosie after a worker?
A. The worker had a space dream.
B. Rosie was actually designed by a worker.
C. She believes the name will bring good luck to the flight.
D. She expects women to play roles in the aerospace industry.
30. What’s the attitude of Leanne Caret to the flight?
A. Opposed. B. Doubtful. C. Confident. D. Indifferent.
31. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. A flight test dummy to be the first to fly to the ISS.
B. A brief introduction to a future manned space flight.
C. Why Boeing’s CTS-100 Starliner spacecraft make the flight.
D. How the flight test dummy Rosie the astronaut got her name.
D
For sports fans, there’s nothing better than watching a live event on TV or at a sports field. But there’s nothing worse than that event being called off because of bad weather. Bad light, a waterlogged pitch or too much heat can cause matches to be postponed. But according to the latest research, extreme weather might be disturbing the sporting calendar more than ever in the future.
In one sport, golf, major tournaments like The Open, are already predicted to be victims of our changing climate. In the UK, an organization called The Climate Coalition says that golf courses such as the Old Course at St Andrews could be under water by the end of the century if sea level rise even slightly. It told the BBC that its research predicts “cancelled football matches, flooded cricket grounds and golf courses falling apart into the sea.”
The threat to sporting events from climate change has been further highlighted in a new report, officially approved and licensed by the Rapid Transition Alliance. Writing about this for the BBC, Matt McGrath says that “By 2050, it's estimated that almost one in four English football league grounds can expect flooding every year.” This will mean fewer matches played, less opportunity to watch the beautiful game and reduced government taxation from ticket sales.
Cricket also faces huge challenges globally as temperatures rise in places like India, Australia and the West Indies. The report says that stadiums in Adelaide and Perth will see a 60% increase in days with temperatures over 40℃ over the next decade.
Of course, we know that the solution lies in reducing our carbon footprint. We could travel less to attend sports events, and reduce our waste when we do go. But this latest report finds that sports leaders are generally failing to address the issue seriously. However, because sport is universally popular and can be very influential, maybe it should be players, teams, their sponsors as well as fans who promote a low-carbon message to help protect sports fields --- before it’s “game over”.
32. What’s the latest research above mainly concerned with?
A. The rising sea level.
B. The disappearing sporting events.
C. The influence of climate change on sports.
D. The severe environmental pollution.
33. What influence will extreme weather have on the sports?
A. Football fans cannot afford the entrance fee.
B. The golf games will thoroughly disappear due to rising sea level.
C. Overheating will largely affect the cricket calendar.
D. Sports leaders will face bigger challenges to lead their teams to win.
34. What does the underlined part “the issue” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. The constant increase in sea level.
B. The changing attitude of sponsors.
C. The decreasing popularity of some sporting events.
D. The effective reduction of carbon footprints.
35. The research is introduced to us mainly to__________ .
A. appeal to sponsors for financial support
B. require governments’ protection of sports fields
C. inform the readers of the worsening global climate change
D. popularize the awareness of low carbon life through sports

An Act of Neighborliness
The skies were dark. A strong wind was blowing hard, cutting my face like a sharp knife. Rain fell in big drops and thunder and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked home, through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags tightly and rushing home, I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards.
I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying. I quickly turned back and went back to the place from where the sounds came. I was frightened! To my sadness, I found that a small child had fallen into the hole on the road. The boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water. I could hardly see the child as it was dark all around me. I told him that I was going to look for help. I knew the neighbors well, and they all shared a sense of neighborliness, willing to give a hand.

第二节
Actually, I was not sure of what to do or where to go but decided to go to the nearest house for help. I charged away to knock on the door on end. After a while, an athletic man of medium height opened the door. Panicked as I was, I attempted to collect my thoughts, trying to explain the situation in the way as concise as possible. While calming me by patting my shoulder, the man reached over to grab the torch on the shoe cabinet near the door. No sooner had we arrived where the child was trapped than the man started to scan the surroundings. Then he inched toward the hole and stretched out to seize the child’s hands, pulling him out completely. Shortly afterwards, we sent the child to the nearest police station and waited for his parents.
The parents of the child who just arrived from work were totally shocked to hear of what had happened. They were more than grateful and thanked us. With an outpouring of relief, I was also proud of myself, as I had never imagined I would be part of a rescue party and the act of neighborliness could really make such a difference. While the mother and the father were holding the child tightly, I spotted the man beaming at the child with softness gleaming in his eyes. I was absorbed in my wild thought, wondering whether he was also a tender father. All of a sudden, thunder crashed overhead, which brought me back to reality. I walked to the man and tugged his sleeve, whispering, “Thank you.” I would never forget the good feeling of helping someone in need.
