Arthur Lih of Massapequa sold his first LifeVac, a device to help save people’s life, to a fire department about 18 months ago, when the Jericho Fire Department purchased 21 of the devices. Now about 10 Long Island fire departments have purchased Lih’s invention, which is designed to draw foreign objects from the throats of choking victims when procedures such as the Heimlich Maneuver don’t work. He has sold about 5,000 LifeVac devices in the United States and abroad since the device went on the market in August 2014.
The Freeport Fire Department is one of Lih’s clients. It bought about 25 LifeVac devices to put on trucks, as well as in chiefs’ vehicles, said Ray Maguire, the department’s executive director. “It’s an extra tool in the toolbox,” Maguire said. “I’d be surprised if anyone who sees it doesn’t purchase it. It’s that tool you may only need once, but it’s the tool you really want in case you need it. It’s affordable. I have it in my car. I have one at home, too.”
Dr. Lee Smith at Northwell Health said that if a choking victim can’t breathe, he or she becomes a candidate for the Heimlich. If the Heimlich doesn’t work, the victim would probably lose consciousness because of a lack of oxygen.
A challenge for any new medical device is convincing potential users that it works and is safe. In tests, the LifeVac successfully removed an obstruction (阻塞物) from the throat of a dead human body on the first try 49 out of 50 times, according to an August research article in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
Lih invented the product in his garage, inspired after he went with a friend to a hospital while the friend’s mother was going through tests. The friend said the last time he was there, a 7-year-old child had choked to death on a grape.
4、What’s the function of the LifeVac device?
A.To put out the fire. B.To remove foreign objects.
C.To design procedures. D.To treat victims’ throats.
5、What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the invention?
A.Its target users. B.Its practical necessity.
C.Its major advantages. D.Its reasonable price
6、What inspired Lih to invent the product?
    A. A kid’s death B. His client’s suggestion.
    C. A garage accident. D. Material rewards.
7、What is the text mainly about?
A.A productive inventor. B.A convincing cure.
    C.An anti-choking device. D.An important toolbox.
Going against the tide of flocking to well-known tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known tourist attractions. Reverse tourism (逆向旅游)has appeared as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
According to data from an online travel agency, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less-traveled cities during the holiday was up 30 percent year-on-year. Bookings for four-star or five-star hotels in less-traveled places all increased at least 10 times. Some lesser-known scenic spots posted double-digit growth during the holiday. Baimaiquan Park in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, received 52,100 visits in the seven days, up 15.78 percent year-over-year.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations. In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as “commercial” as developed ones and are able to offer more actual experiences and natural encounters. Essentially speaking, total relaxation is becoming a real expectation for many people when they travel. Changes in demand may be the fundamental reason for the popularity of reverse tourism. COVID-19 is another key factor fueling reverse tourism. As precautionary measures continue, traveling has an unpredictable quality. Travelers have thus become more cautious and tend to choose local attractions or places with fewer tourists.
“The rise of reverse tourism is not a bad thing,” said Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market. More importantly, it noted, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their past honor.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market. To give a real boost to the tourism market, Jiang suggested that more efforts be made to tap the potential of underrated (被低估了的), lesser-known destinations. It is necessary to dig deeper into the local customs and highlight the local characteristics to improve the quality of local tourism.
8、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The popularity of travel agency in China.
B.The contributions of tourism to the economy.
C.The high income of hotels during holidays.
D.The increasing trend of reverse tourism in China.
9、What may be the root cause of the rise of reverse tourism?
    A.The effect of COVID-19.
    B.Holidaymakers’ changing needs for travel.
    C.No improvements in famous spots.
D.The cheaper prices of the less-traveled places.
10、What does Zhengzhou Daily think of reverse tourism?
A.It will drop with the recovery of economy.
B.It benefits both tourists and the tourism market.
C.It is helpful to spread local culture to tourists.
D.It stops the development of the famous resorts.
11、What is Jiang Han’s advice on developing the tourism market?
A.Finding the potential and features of less-traveled attractions.
B.Improving the management of the local tourism.
C.Upgrading the facilities in tourist areas.
D.Highlighting the local tourism through media.
“I have travelled the world for 25 years in search of trouble,” admits Dr David Nott in his recent autobiography, War Doctor: Surgery on the Front Line. “It is a kind of addiction, a pull I find hard to resist.” This pull has seen him use his surgical skills to help those in need by taking unpaid, month-long breaks from his “day job” as an NHS surgeon in the UK every year to work in conflict zones and disaster areas.
He first worked in Sarajevo in 1993 as a volunteer with the French charity Médecins Sans Froatières. The hospital be worked in had so many holes in its walls caused by bombing and sniper(狙击手) fire that it was called the “Swiss Cheese Hospital”. It was his first insight into the terrifying reality of treating patients in a war zone. The hospital suffered power cuts during operations and he and his team were regularly shot at.
But Nott found this exhilarating(令人激动的). “Going to Sarajevo, almost getting killed, I had never felt so wonderful. I really felt as though somebody bad injected me with something. I felt fantastic. I think to skirt death—and then to realize how close you are to death and that you survived it is exciting. And that’s the experience I’ve had many times over.”
This attitude may seem reckless (鲁莽的), but it means that Nott has saved lives in desperate situations. In Gaza in 2014, he decided not to abandon a young girl in the middle of surgery despite being told that the hospital was about to be bombed. He carried on, no bombs fell and the girl survived. He has kept a photograph of them taken together three days later. In Yemen, he operated on the wife of a bomb-maker who had accidentally blown up his own house. Nott found a detonator (雷管) buried in her leg and bad to carefully dispose of it before continuing the operation.

    B. Working as a surgeon in a war zone.
    C. Performing surgeries on his patients.
    D. Taking month-long breaks from his day job.
13、When was the book War Doctor: Surgery on the Front Line, probably published?
    A.In 1993. B.In 2014. C.In 2018. D.In 2021.
14、What makes the experience thrilling according to Nott?
    A. The feeling of narrowly escaping death.
    B. The thought of saving lives.
    C. The improvement of his surgery skills.
    D. The difficulty of working in desperate situations.
15、Which of the following words can best describe Dr. David Nott?
A.Modest and courageous. B.Generous and strict.
C.Careless and aggressive. D.Adventurous and selfless.
    二、七选五
16、 There have been several incidents at some events in recent years where people died because of unsafe crowd conditions and stampedes(蜂拥). The latest such one unfolded in Seoul, South Korea, where a Halloween gathering in a club district turned deadly, with at least 155 deaths being reported. ①_____ Indeed, it’s a frightening situation to be in and circumstances may make it impossible to escape. But there are several strategies that could help you avoid a potentially deadly outcome.
Have a plan before you need one
The key to staying safe in a crowd begins as soon as you arrive at the location. ②_____ It’s a piece of common-sense advice that you should apply not just at big events, but even when entering almost any room.
    Go with the flow
If there’s a sudden panic and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, you may fight back and push the opposite way. ③_____ If you go against the flow, you increase your chances of getting tripped and knocked down.
    ④_____
As you move forward with the crowd, it’s best to move in a diagonal (对角线的) direction. The goal is to get to the edge of the stampede where it’s less likely that you’ll end up stuck at a chokepoint, like a doorway.
    Find somewhere to protect yourself
Another potential way to handle the situation is to protect yourself and allow the crowd to move past you. Look for a solid structure to stand behind such as a pillar (柱子) or a wall. ⑤_____
    Give yourself some breathing room
In many stampede events, people die from asphyxiation (窒息). But a possible way to avoid this is to place your arms in front of you, almost in a boxer—like stance (站立姿势). That could give you some very valuable breathing room—literally.
    A.Angle your way out.
    B.Don’t move straight.
C.But that could be a big mistake.
    D.But it’s surprisingly effective and possibly life-saving.
E.Other places to duck: behind a car or even a lamppost.
F.Namely, you should take note of where the nearest exits are.
G.This may leave some people thinking there’s little you can do to survive a stampede.

The father asked his son, "What is this?" The son replied, "It is a crow." After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, "What is this?" The son said, "Father, I told you just now. It's a crow."
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, "What is this?"
At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son's tone when he said to his father. "It's a crow, a crow." A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, "What is this?"
This time his son shouted at his father, "Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW'? Are you not able to understand this?"
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page:
Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn't at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my innocent son.
    Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father.

    13、答案:C
解析:细节理解题。根据文章第一段第一句“I have travelled the world for 25 years in search of trouble,” admits Dr David Nott in his recent autobiography, War Doctor: Surgery on the Front Line.(大卫·诺特医生在他最近的自传《战医:前线的外科手术》中承认:我周游世界25年来一直在寻找麻烦)”和第二段“He first worked in Sarajevo in 1993 as a volunteer with the French charity Médecins Sans Froatières.(他第一次在萨拉热窝工作是在1993年,当时他是法国慈善机构无国界医生组织的志愿者)”可知,这本书记录的是大卫医生在前线的做外科手术的事情,他1993第一次参加这种工作,书中又说他周游世界已经25年了,所以1993+25=2018。由此可推断,这本书可能是在2018年发表的。故选C。
    14、答案:A
解析:细节理解题。根据文章第三段“I think to skirt death—and then to realize how close you are to death and that you survived it is exciting. And that’s the experience I’ve had many times over.(我认为避免死亡—然后意识到你离死亡有多近,并且你活了下来一是令人兴奋的。这就是我多次经历过的事情)可知,大卫医生认为这种死里逃生的感觉是令人兴奋的。题干中的“thrilling”和文中的“exciting”是同义替换。故选A。
    15、答案:D
解析:推理判断题。根据文章第三段“I think to skirt death—and then to realize how close you are to death and that you survived it is exciting. And that's the experience I've had many times over.(我认为避免死亡—然后意识到你离死亡有多近,并且你活了下来—是令人兴奋的。这就是我多次经历过的事情)”可推知,大卫医生是富有冒险精神的;根据文章最后一段“In Gaza in 2014, he decided not to abandon a young girl in the middle of surgery despite being told that the hospital was about to be bombed. He carried on, no bombs fell and the girl survived.(2014年,在加沙,尽管被告知医院即将被炸毁,他还是决定不抛弃正在接受手术的一个年轻女孩。他继续进行手术,没有炸弹落下,女孩也活了下来)”和“In Yemen, he operated on the wife of a bomb-maker who had accidentally blown up his own house. Nott found a detonator(雷管) buried in her leg and bad to carefully dispose of it before continuing the operation.(在也门,他为一名炸弹制造者的妻子做手术,他意外炸毁了自己的房子。诺特发现一枚雷管埋在她的腿里,在继续手术之前,他必须小心处理)”可推知,大卫医生是无私的。故选D。
    16、答案:GFCAE
解析:①逻辑关系题。根据前文There have been several incidents at some events in recent years where people died because of unsafe crowd conditions and stampedes. The latest such one unfolded in Seoul, South Korea, where a Halloween gathering in a club district turned deadly, with at least 155 deaths being reported.(近年来,在一些活动中发生了几起事件,人们因不安全的人群状况和踩踏而死亡。最近一次这样的事件发生在韩国首尔,一个俱乐部区的万圣节聚会导致死亡,据报道至少有155人死亡。)和下文Indeed, it's a frightening situation to be in and circumstances may make it impossible to escape.(事实上,这是一种令人恐惧的处境,这种环境可能会让人无法逃脱。)可知,在踩踏事件中存活下来很困难。选项G.This may leave some people thinking there's little you can do to survive a stampede.(这可能会让一些人认为,要想在踩踏事件中幸存下来,你几乎无能为力。)能够承上启下,符合语境。故选G。
②推理判断题。根据前文The key to staying safe in a crowd begins as soon as you arrive at the location.(在人群中保持安全的关键在于你一到达现场就开始了。)和下文It's a piece of common-sense advice that you should apply not just at big events, but even when entering almost any room.(这是一条常识性的建议,你不仅应该在大型活动中应用,甚至在进入几乎任何房间时也应该应用。)可知,建议人们一到达一个地方,就应该注意出口的位置。选项F.Namely, you should take note of where the nearest exits are.(也就是说,你应该注意最近的出口在哪里。)符合语境。故选F。
③推理判断题。根据前文if there's a sudden panic and crowds begin to push in a certain direction, you may fight back and push the opposite way.(如果突然出现恐慌,人群开始向某个方向推进,你可能会反击,并向相反方向推进。)和后文If you go against the flow, you increase your chances of getting tripped and knocked down.(如果你逆行,你会增加被绊倒和击倒的机会。)可知,逆行是不对的。C.But that could be a big mistake.(但这可能是个大错误。)符合语境。故选C。
④标题归纳题。根据下文As you move forward with the crowd, it's best to move in a diagonal(对角线的) direction. The goal is to get to the edge of the stampede where it's less likely that you'll end up stuck at a chokepoint, like a doorway.(随着人群向前移动,最好是对角移动。我们的目标是到达踩踏事件的边缘,在那里你不太可能被困在一个阻塞点,比如门口。)可知,这是建议人们调整移动方向。A.Angle your way out.(调整你的出路。)符合语境。故选A。
⑤推理判断题。根据上文Another potential way to handle the situation is to protect yourself and allow the crowd to move past you. Look for a solid structure to stand behind such as a pillar(柱子) or a wall.(处理这种情况的另一种可能方式是保护自己,让人群从你身边经过。寻找一个坚实的结构,如柱子或墙壁。)可知,这是建议人们找到可以躲避的地方。E.Other places to duck: behind a car or even a lamppost.(其他可以躲避的地方:汽车后面,甚至灯柱后面。)符合语境。故选E。

One day, Li Ming and I were getting boiled water in the water dispenser when suddenly the boiling water burnt his hands.
The burn was so severe that the skin was red and swollen. However, I managed to remain calm, quickly recalling what I had learnt in my first-aid class. I placed his feet under the cool running water right away to ease the pain. Afterwards, I called a taxi and rushed him to the hospital where he received further treatment.
After checking carefully, the doctor said because of my correct and timely treatment, Li Ming would recover faster. Only then was I aware how important and practical a basic knowledge of first aid was.
    34、答案:
    Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling angry while his father asked him the same question just four times! The son thought to himself, “If I am in old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?”
    Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud, “I promise to let you feel happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering me with your selfless affection. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will pay you back in the best way.” And then he hugged his father lovingly.
