New study shws that when teachers participate in a training prgramme fcused n prscial(亲社会的) classrm behaviur, their students are better able t cntrl their emtins, and that children wh can regulate emtins are mre likely t be academically successful.
Fr the study, which appeared in PreventinScience, researchers surveyed mre than 100 teachers and ver 1,817 students frm kindergarten t primary schl t see if teachers culd supprt students’ emtinal and behaviural grwth thrugh the Incredible Years Teacher Classrm Management (IYTCM) prgramme.
The prgramme uses vides and training sessins, alng with rle-play and caching, t help teachers learn management skills such as using behaviur-specific praise, building psitive relatinships with students, and cnsidering hw t reduce pr behaviur. Teachers in the training grup increased interactins with students by 64 percent cmpared with 53 percent fr teachers in the cntrl grup withut the training.
“Emtinal regulatin is the ability t recgnise what behaviur is apprpriate in the present situatin, ” says Wendy Reinke, prfessr in the Cllege f Educatin at the University f Missuri.“Fr example, a student might have difficulty cntrlling the feeling f anger if he r she becmes annyed with anther student. But under this prgramme, the teacher encurages them t mve t a different spt in the classrm, effectively teaching them that smetimes taking a break is a gd way t calm dwn and manage that feeling.”
After ne schl year f using the prgramme in classrms, students imprved their scial ability t regulate their emtins. These imprvements resulted in an increase in the tests fr students in Incredible Years classrms vs.students in cntrl classrms.
