When I was eleven, my parents gave me the first book I ever owned--The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe. It was written by the famous novelist Edgar Allan Poe. I clearly remember opening it, reading the first lines of the book, and saying to myself, “So this is what reading is!” I was delighted. Little did I know at the time that I was at the beginning of a lifelong journey.
So, if I read my first real book at the age of eleven, what was I reading before then? In a word, these books are relatively plotless and repetitive, and they attempt to teach children to recognize letters and their sounds and to build their vocabulary. But I still had no idea what writing was. In Poe's stories, the sentences were more complex and stylish than anything I had ever read before.
Poe, in short, was a start. My parents gave me that first book, but then I searched for other books. I liked science, which led me to discover Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Other writers followed in quick one after another, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, and Arthur C. Clarke. But I didn't limit myself to science fiction. Other books that deeply impressed me, and which I have carried on my life's journey, include: The Yearling. Shane, Ivanhoe, Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Good Earth.
It went on from there. I became that kid who, long after his parents turned the lights off, hid under the covers with a flashlight, a book, and his greatest fear of being discovered and having his flashlight taken away. I realized that my parents must have known I was defying them. But in their wisdom they pretended to ignore it. And so I owe my start as a reader to my parents.

    D. The importance of reading was understood by the author.
    25. What is the purpose of plotless books?
    A. To broaden children's visions. B. To teach kids how to write.
    C. To arouse kids' interest in novels. D. To help children learn new words.
    26. What did the author do after reading his first real book?
    A. He tried doing scientific research. B. He expanded the range of reading materials.
    C. He started to write science fiction. D. He advised his parents to buy more books.
    27. The underlined word “defying” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “________.”
    A. disobeying B. blaming C. appreciating D. satisfying

An attitude is a habitual way of thinking, feeling and/or behaving towards particular objects, people, events or ideologies (意识). Our attitudes allow us to turn mistakes into opportunities, and loss into the chance for new beginnings. We use our attitudes to explain and respond to the world around us. You weren't born with attitudes, rather they are all learned, and this happens in a number of ways.
The most powerful influences occur during early childhood and include both what happened to you directly, and what those around you did and said in your presence. As you acquire a distinctive identity, your attitudes are further improved by the behavior of those with whom you identify — your family, those of your gender and culture, and the people you admire, even though you may not know them personally. Friendships and other important relationships become increasingly important, particularly during teenagerhood.
Many people believe that our attitudes are internally consistent (一致的), that is, the way you think and feel about someone or something predicts your behavior towards them. However, many studies have found that feelings and thoughts don't necessarily predict behavior. For example, many say they believe in the benefits of recycling or exercise, but don't behave in line with their views, because it takes awareness, effort and courage to go beyond merely stating that you believe something is a good idea.
One of the most effective ways to change an attitude is to start behaving as if you already feel and think the way you'd prefer to… Take some time to reflect 'on your attitudes, to think about what you believe and why. Is there anything you consider a burden rather than a privilege? If so, start behaving — right now — as if the latter is the case.
    28. What do we learn from the passage about attitude?
    A. It shapes our beliefs and ideologies.
    B. It improves our psychological health.
    C. It changes the way we interact with one another.
    D. It determines how we react to our environment.
    29. What can contribute to the improvement of one's attitude?
    A. The educational level.
    B. Their contact with the opposite gender.
    C. The idols' behaviors.
    D. The interaction with different cultures.
    30. Why don't many people do what they believe is good?
    A. They can't afford the time. B. They have no idea how to.
    C. They lack willpower. D. They are not honest.
    31. What is recommended as a strategy to change attitude?
    A. Starting to act in a way that matches one's expectations.
    B. Changing things that require one's immediate attention.
    C. Adjusting one's behavior gradually over a period of time.
    D. Finding ways of reducing one's psychological burdens.
    D
When people think of threats facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But research shows noise pollution is another essential thing we need to be monitoring. Scientists say the changes in the sounds of our oceans, seas, and other waterways affect many marine animals—from very small shrimps to huge whales.
Francis Juanes, an ecologist, explained, “For fish, sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light.” Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Many ocean animals use sounds to find good places to breed(培育) their young babies.
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise is coming from shipping traffic, motorized fishing ships, underwater oil and gas exploration, offshore construction, and other noisy human activity. “For many marine species, their attempts to communicate are being masked by sounds that humans have introduced,” said Carlos Duarte, who co-wrote the paper with Juanes.
Experts at NOAA (the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) explain the term masking on its website. Masking happens when one or more noises in the water block sound important to a marine animal's existence. NOAA experts state that masking is most noticeable when “a noise is at the same frequency and loudness as biologically important sounds, such as mating calls.”
The stress from human noise might also affect the immune system—an animal's natural defense system—as well as reproductive (繁殖的)health or behavior. “Imagine having to raise your kids in a place that's noisy all the time,” said Joe Roman. He is a marine ecologist at the University of Vermont and was not involved in the research. Roman added that it should come as no surprise that many marine animals are showing higher levels of stress due to noise.
    32. Why is it essential to monitor noise pollution in the ocean?
    A. Noise pollution threatens the survival of marine animals.
    B. Marine animals are less sensitive to light and plastic.
    C. Marine pollution keeps changing the sounds of the ocean.
    D. Noise pollution results directly from climate change.
    33. What do the experts mean by using the term “masking”?
    A. Being unable to detect mate calls leads to decline of marine animals.
    B. The noise only occurs when it is of the same frequency of animals' sounds.
    C. The mixed noise prevents animals from detecting important sounds.
    D. Human activities are involved in producing noise in the ocean.
    34. What does Joe Roman suggest in the last paragraph?
    A. The immune system of marine animals is the same as kids'.
    B. Raising kids in a noisy environment leads to more pressure.
    C. Noise pollution is easier to deal with than other ocean threats.
    D. Marine animals suffer from stress in a noisy environment.
    35. What is the suitable title for the passage?
    A. The Sharp Decline of Marine Animals
    B. Humans Are Making Oceans Too Noisy
    C. Time to Clean Up the Polluted Ocean
    D. Importance of Sounds for Ocean Animals
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In our lives we may have people who need help one way or another. They could be our friends, our colleagues and even our parents. And,of course, if these people do matter in our lives, we want to try our best to help them. 36
Consider finding someone they look up to. Usually, a proud person thinks highly of themselves, and not too highly of anyone else. 37 Find this person and get him to go up to the proud person and talk about their unwillingness to accept help from others.
Give them advice. By now you may have gotten your proud friend to come to talk to you. Now is the time for giving your proud friend some advice. But how do you give advice to someone who thinks too highly of himself? You can use words like “Don't you think...” “You told me before...” 38
Improve your approach and strategies as you proceed. Sometimes the proud person may feel angry that you've helped them. 39 You might just need to accept their roller coaster (过山车) of emotions about accepting your help and simply not take it personally, ever.
40 Two proud people make for a very uncomfortable relationship. Don't be too proud to let this person give a hand to you. Indeed, the moment he does, you owe him and can swiftly remind him of the debt being repaid when you offer him help back!
    A. Let the proud person help you.
    B. Help the proud person in a secret way.
    C. Other times they realize your help counts.
    D. Then suddenly they reject whatever you offer.
    E. But how do we help them when they're too proud to seek help?
    F. However, most people have at least one person that they respect.
    G. Try to make it seem like they already have had the solution themselves.
