Growing up in Conway, South Carolina, I was always athletic and competitive. One afternoon, my brother grabbed me in the yard, and I felt some kind of pop. About an hour later, I couldn't get up from a chair. Over the weekend, my joints(关节) swelled up. My mother took me to the hospital. It took nearly six months to check what was wrong with me. Then I was put on treatment. But I had so much joint damage that I couldn't run like I used to.
My dad was a serious golfer. One day he said, “Let's try golf.” He carried me onto the course. Seeing him hit those good shots made me want to do it too.
It wasn't easy at first, because I had a lot of pain in my hands. I'd played golf, but it had never really caught my interest—it was too quiet for me. But I was happy to be outside, to have a chance of competing again, and I fell in love with it.
Later I made the high school team, but I got frustrated when I didn't win, so I worked harder. Golf was the most challenging game I'd ever played.
I got a golf scholarship to the University of South Carolina and turned professional after I graduated. I still take medication, and I'm stiff and in pain sometimes. But I've got used to that.
I probably wouldn't be a professional athlete if I hadn't got sick. The experience taught me patience, and I learned to take nothing for granted. I know how happy I am to do what I do.
4.What do we know about the author from Paragraph 1?
A.He was born with swelled joints.
B.His joints healed very quickly.
C.He completely recovered after the treatment.
D.The cause of his disease was found out six months later.
5.What inspired the author to play golf at the beginning?
A.His love for golf. B.His interest in sports.
C.His father's good performance. D.His unwillingness to stay indoors.
6.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.It was the author's brother who first became aware that he had a disease.
B.Suffering a lot of pain in his hands, the author wasn't interested in playing golf at first.
C.After founding a high school team, the author played harder and became professional.
D.The author thought he should cherish everything he had, even his disease.
7.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Playing through pain B.The burden lifted
C.A bitter fight D.Standing tall
C
For many people, going a few hours without your smartphone can feel like a lifetime. Now, one expert claims that humans are becoming so dependent on technology, that we’re actually merging (融合) into it.
Speaking at the Fast Company European Innovation Festival, Professor Yuval Noah Harari, a historian at the Hebrew University claimed that it’s becoming more and more difficult to tell where humans end and machines begin. He said: “It’s increasingly hard to tell where I end and where the computer begins. In the future, it is likely that the smartphone will not be separated from you at all. It may be embedded(嵌入) in your body or brain, constantly scanning your biometric data and your emotions.”
During his speech, Professor Harari highlighted how humans have affected our environment over time, and suggested that now may be the time to affect ourselves. He said: “Humanity has always remained constant. If we told our ancestors in the Stone Age about our lives today, they would think we are already Gods. But the truth is that even though we have developed more wonderful tools, we are the same animals. We have the same emotions, the same minds. The coming revolution(革命;巨变) will change that. It will change not just our tools, it will change the human being itself. ”
If we do manage to merge with machines, Professor Harari suggests it could open the door to setting up civilizations beyond Earth. He added: “Life will be able to break out of planet Earth and no longer be confined(局限于) to this flying rock.”
While Professor Harari’s claims may sound farfetched (牵强的), he isn’t alone in his vision of a machinehuman world. Back in 2017, Elon Musk claimed that humans should merge with machines, or risk becoming irrelevant. He said: “Over time I think we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence.”
8. Why does the author mention smartphone in paragraph 1?
A. To collect data for his speech.
B. To have a good leadin of the topic.
C. To say it is harmful to the environment.
D. To catch up with the development of science.
9. What do we know about Professor Harari?
A. His opinions gained much support.
B. He is the first expert to put forward the idea.
C. He thinks technology will change ourselves as well.
D. His suggestion of us staying on planet Earth is considerate.
10. What’s probably Elon Musk’s attitude to Professor Harari’s speech?
A. Neutral. B. Favourable.
C. Ambiguous. D. Disapproving.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Humans are near to combining with machines
B. Call on people to develop advanced machines
C. A speech caused people’s concerns on machines
D. Finding new ways to break away from apps is vital
D
In the past few years, scientists have found micro-plastics in our soil. tap water, bottled water, beer and even in the air we breathe. And there's growing concern about the potential health risks they pose(造成) to humans.
The new analysis in the UK have discovered micro-plastics widely distributed across all 10 lakes and rivers sampled. More than 1,000 small pieces of plastic per litre were found in the River Thames, which was revealed last year as the most polluted place tested worldwide. Even in relatively remote places such as the Falls of Dochart and Loch Lomond in Scot land, two or three pieces per litre were found.
Micro-plastics are not a specific kind of plastic, but rather any type of small pieces of plastic that is less than 5 mm in length according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration- They may originate from a variety of sources, including cosmetics, clothing, and industrial processes.
Humans are known to consume the tiny plastic particles through food and water, but the possible health effects on people and ecosystems have yet to be determined. One study, in Singapore, has found that micro-plastics can harbor harmful microbes (微生物).
Research by the National University of Singapore found more than 400 types of bacteria on 275 pieces of micro-plastic collected from local beaches. They included insects that cause gastroenteritis (肠胃炎)and wound infections in humans.
"Micro-plastics are being found absolutely everywhere but we do not know the harm they could be doing," said Christian Dunn at Bangor University, Wales. who led the work. "It's no use looking back in 20 years' time and saying: 'If only we’d realized just how bad it was. ' We need to be monitoring our waters now and we need to think, as a country and a world, how we can be reducing our reliance on plastic.”
12. What does the article talk about?
A. Definition of Micro-plastic B. Micro-plastic Pollution
C. Function of Micro-plastic D. Micro-plastic Distribution

A. To take action to use less plastics.

第二节:任务型阅读。根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项,请把答案写在答题卡上。
Academic pressure doesn’t necessarily wait until college to become a problem. Over-achieving students who are much younger often have to face burnout, sadness and even nervous breakdowns. 16
Create a schedule of your priorities and follow it. As the saying goes, “If your destination is unclear, you’ll never know if you’ve arrived.” 17 From time to time check on your progress. Being organized, you are most likely to accomplish more in less time. Besides, you’ll have a feeling of accomplishment. Both results will reduce the academic pressure you may be feeling.
18 There’s nothing so damaging as allowing the pressure to build up within you, because it will stop your ability to produce. Also, simply putting your feelings on paper tends to reduce the pressure’s effects.
Make as many friends as you can, and spend time with people you love and who love you. 19 It tends to keep your mind off the stress, besides being enjoyable.
If you still find the academic pressure unbearable, consider professional help. Until recently, those who failed to deal with stress often put the blame on the medical workers, but now it’s a recognized way to solve this type of problem. 20 If not, seek help on your own.
Exercise daily. Take a few minutes to walk around the block. If you have more time, work out at a gym or run a mile. There is nothing that can reduce the feeling of stress more than exercise regularly.
A. Take notes of your daily routine on a regular basis.
B. Start a diary in which you detail the pressures you face.
C. Probably you will find such help available at your school.
D. Hopefully, there are always some ways to help deal with it .
E. If something unexpected happens, no one can really stop it.
F. Make it a point to spend time with them at least once or twice each week.
G. So make a list of what you need to accomplish and include a timetable for it.
