Watching news about the environment on TV can make people feel terrible. The problems seem so big that it's difficult to imagine how persons can do anything about them. Rebecca Hosking, however, thought differently.
Rebecca is a wildlife camerawoman and she was filming a documentary for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean when she saw something that made her cry—quite a lot of dead birds that had died because they had eaten some plastics that is thrown into the sea each year. Beaches that used to be beautiful were covered with plastic toys, bottles, pens—every plastic thing you can think of.
Rebecca decided she had to do something. Back home she thought about what she could do to help deal with the problem of throwaway plastics. In her hometown of Modbury, she asked local shop owners to stop using plastic bags in their shops.
Plastic bags are used everywhere in the UK. The numbers are amazing. The UK uses nearly 17,000,000,000 plastic bags each year. And the bags can take a very long time to break down because they are chemicals(化学物) rather than natural things, so each year the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.
To Rebecca's surprise, the shop owners agreed and Modbury became the first plastic bag free town in the UK. Instead, shops offered cotton bags or paper bags. Other towns around the UK followed Modbury's example and are becoming plastic bag free. It won't deal with all of the world's environment problems but it shows that there is something we can do and one person can make a big change with a strong enough decision.

The brown bears at Helsinki 's Korkeasaari Zoo received a particular treat, thanks to the generosity of a young boy. Twelve-year-old Otso Riiali donated 200 euros to the zoo to give the bears new climbing trees, without which he thought they would be in danger.
Otso, from the small town of Karjalohja west of Helsinki, says he saved up the money by selling 400 bottles of homemade berry juice with the help of his grandmother. "It was hard work and my back hurt badly from all the bending in the forest while I was picking berries." said Otso.
A visit to the bear shelter a few years ago drove Otso to bring some cheer to the animals, which he said didn't seem energetic.
"Otso could have kept all he made by means of selling juice for himself, but he made a decision to give a part of it to help animals. Otso showed an unusual ability to act. He did not stop at seeing what a bad situation the bears were in. Instead, he began to act in a practical way and made it."
The zoo gladly accepted Otso's donation. However, bear caretaker Tiina Koivu mentioned that the bears' foot-dragging(步履蹒跚) at the time of Otso's visit was caused by the summer heat.
It happens that the name Otso is also an old Finnish(芬兰的) word for bear. "I was born to be a bear lover." said Otso with a smile.

When you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory(记忆) works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault(过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed(责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write but they have to remember things. They cannot write them down in a small notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering things in a way as other people do.

Too many people want to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendship don't last long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you do not tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose friend's trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You do not have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feeling. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and helping with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practice honesty, generosity, and understanding.

To protect the environment, China has put a ban(禁令) on thin plastic bag (plastic bag thinner than 0.025 mm). From June 1,2008, China stopped the production, sale and use of these plastic bags to the public.
Plastic bags can cause “white pollution”, because they can take 400-1,000 years to break down. They pollute the soil(土壤) and water. Plastic bags also cause a serious danger to animals. Animals often mistake plastic bags for food. Thousands of them die each year after eating plastic bags.
So what kind of bags will be the best to use when we are shopping? Recently some students made their own shopping bags. Most students used old clothes to make their bags. They painted pictures like the Olympic rings on them. But Li Mei had a more traditional way to make her hag. She weaved(编织) a bamboo(竹子) basket. It was not an easy job. With her grandfather's help, Li Mei spent the whole afternoon making it.
What can we do? Refuse plastic bags and persuade(说服) people to use environmentally friendly (对环境无害的) shopping bags instead of plastic ones. Try to recycle the ones we have.
