There are moments when it feels like we're put in the perfect place at just the right time to make a big difference in the world around us. For Flaviane Carvalho, the perfect place on New Year's Day happened to be at work. As she was wrapping up her work, a family of four was seated in her section. She immediately noticed something unusual about their behavior. As the mother of a teenager herself, Flaviane's eyes were drawn to the 11-year-old boy.

The boy was depressed, and his family would not let him have anything to eat or drink. Flaviane asked if everything was all right with their food, and they told her the child would eat at home. Warning bells sounding in her head, Flaviane looked closer. Peeking(偷看)out from underneath the boy's hat, she found cuts, and deep scratches on his face.

Thinking quickly, the server wrote out a simple note and held it up behind the child's parents so they couldn't see. "Are you OK?" the note asked. At first, the boy just nodded, but Flaviane quickly added another message: "Do you need help?" A small nod told her everything she needed to know. "I'll never forget the feeling I had when I saw that little boy," Flaviane said. "I just knew something wasn't right! He was scared, and I was scared too."

Flaviane told her boss what was happening and then called 911. When police arrived, they told Flaviane that she had likely saved at least one life that night. "The lesson here for all of us is to recognize when we see something that isn't right to act on it.…This saved the life of a child." Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon said. "I'm super glad." she said. "It just warms my heart that now he has a better chance in life."

Now Sea World on the Gold Coast is the only dolphin park in Australia to continue keeping dolphins in captivity(囚禁). This wouldn't have been possible without thousands of warm-hearted supporters being a voice for dolphins protection over many years.

In August last year, Ben Pearson, our head of campaigns in Australia and New Zealand, appeared before the NSW upper house inquiry into the use wild animals for entertainment to put forward our case for ban on captive Dolphin breeding(饲养)in the the state. "If a dolphin were bred today, it may still be alive in 2070. This regulation frees future dolphins from being kept in lockdown at a time when the public acceptability of keeping dolphins in captivity for entertainment is declining." "As the tide turns against using marine mammals in captivity for entertainment, conversation about what will happen to the dolphins at Sea World needs to start now. First step is a ban on further breeding," Ben Pearson said.

Major travel brands including Tripadvisor and Booking. com have already committed to stop selling tickets to dolphin shows and encounters. As well as these great changes for dolphins from the travel industry, Canada recently passed a ban on keeping dolphins and whales for entertainment. This is part of a global movement towards better treatment of these wild animals, which includes the nations of Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, India, Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, and the UK.

Dolphins are magnificent, intelligent animals. They belong in the wild and should not be bred in captivity for entertainment. In their natural environment, dolphins swim freely in 100 square kilometres of ocean, sometimes more, but the average dolphin in captivity has a fraction(小部分)of that space. Together, we can make this the last generation of dolphins in captivity.

    28. What makes Sea World on the Gold Coast the only dolphin park?

    A. Dolphins take too long a time to feed.

    B. People's awareness of protecting dolphins.

    C. Sea World on the Gold Coast has enough money.

    D. Dolphins in Sea World on the Gold Coast like people's voice.

    29. What does the underlined word "tide" mean in the second paragraph?

    A. Wave.      B. Support.      C. Opinion.      D. Doubt.

    30. What is most likely the result of the measures of the travel industry?

    A. More parks for dolphins will be built.      B. More dolphins will be kept in parks.

    C. Wild animals will live a better life.        D. More countries will feed wild animals.

    31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A. Make Dolphins Live Freely            B. Protect Sea World on the Gold Coast

    C. Change the Ways of Entertainment       D. Prevent People from Feeding Animals

    D

    第二节(满分25)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

"It would be so easy to just take it," I said to myself. "After all, she shouldn't have left it lying around in the first place." The object of my temptation was a purse which sat at the end of the canteen table at which I was having my lunch. A personalised key chain attached to it revealed that the wallet belonged to my classmate, Elizabeth. Elizabeth was from an extremely wealthy family background, and often carried around designer goods and accessories in school. However, she was also careless, and the fact that she had forgotten her wallet and left it lying around (luring recess was proof of that.

I often envied Elizabeth's privileged position. I came from a less advantaged family background, and had to spend hours after school working at a greasy fast-food restaurant near my house to make ends meet. My parents worked long hours and earned small salaries that were barely enough to get on by. Finances were generally so tight in my household that my earnings from work constituted the only source of money for my daily allowance.

The wallet before me was fat with bills and coins. I knew I should return it, but nobody would be any the wiser if I were to just take it and slip it discreetly into my pocket. There had to be at least a hundred dollars inside. I would not have to worry about my allowance for the entire month, and could even fork out a few tens of dollars for my little sister. She was frail for her age and was currently down with the flu. Medical hills were expensive and hence we tried not to go to the doctor unless it was strictly necessary. However, if I had the money, I could afford the luxury of getting her well-looked after.

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右。

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Yet my conscience stopped me from taking the purse.

Concluding my internal conflict, I picked up the heavy little purse and got up from the table.
