When I was a little child, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner quite often. And I remember one night she made breakfast after a long, hard day at work.

That evening, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned cookies in front of my dad. I remembered waiting to see if anyone would say anything. Yet all my dad did was to reach for his cookie, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him eat every bite of that cookie!

When I got up from the table that evening, I remembered hearing my mom apologize (道歉) to my dad for burning the cookies. And I’ll never forget what he said, “Dear, I love burned cookies.”

Later that night, I went to kiss Dad goodnight, and I asked him if he really did like his cookies burned. He embraced (拥抱) me and said, “Your mom had a hard day at work today, and she’s very tired. Besides, a little burned cookie never hurt anyone!”

Life is full of imperfect (不完美的) things and imperfect people. We need to learn to accept each other’s faults (错误) and celebrate each other’s differences.

    1. After the mom made dinner one night, the writer _____.
      A. showed no interest in the cookies his mom made
      B. was so hungry that he couldn’t wait to eat all the food
      C. waited to see if his dad noticed the burned cookies
      D. talked about the fun things at school with his dad
    2. The dad looked _____ when he was eating the cookies.
      A. happy    B. angry   C. worried   D. crazy
    3. From Paragraphs 3-4, we can tell that the writer’s dad _____.
      A. was very busy during the daytime  B. was deeply in love with his mother
      C. liked eating cookies very much   D. liked making dinner for his family
    4. What can we learn from the story?
      A. Never hurt those who love you.   B. Be thankful for what you have today.
      C. Learn to be understanding.    D. Think twice before making a decision.

Have you ever taken a photo with a tiger in a zoo? When you travel around Southeast Asia, are you hoping to ride an elephant? Well, TripAdvisor said this month that they would no longer sell tickets for these kinds of wildlife(野生动植物) activities. TripAdvisor is one of the world’s busiest travel websites.

The University of Oxford’s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit published(出版) a study last year. It said that these activities were bad for animals. When people make elephants carry visitors, they often beat them with sticks (棍子). People also drug (下药) tigers and lions to make them safer for tourists to stay with.

“This animal abuse (虐待) is a hidden by-product (副产品) of the tourism industry(旅游业),” said Steve McIvor, CEO of World Animal Protection. According to the Oxford study, wildlife attractions take up 20 to 40 percent of all tourism worldwide. Up to 6 million people visit these attractions each year. As many as 4 million tourists spend money on these wildlife activities. Without this money, these activities would stop running.

However, the study also found that many of these tourists are actually animal lovers. About 80 percent of them didn’t know that these activities weren’t good for the animals. Tourists aren’t very good at telling whether a wildlife attraction is humane (人道的) or not, said the study.

“That’s why it’s so important for TripAdvisor to end its sales of the wildlife activities. It sends a message that taking photos with tigers or riding elephants is not something you should do,” said McIvor.

    1. What is TripAdvisor?
      A. It is a zoo.       B. It is an animal activity.
      C. It is a travel group.     D. It is a travel website.
    2. In the second paragraph, “It said that these activities were bad for animals”, “it” refers to (指代) _____.
      A. the University of Oxford    B. Wildlife Conservation Research Unit
      C. the study       D. TripAdvisor
    3. How many people visit wildlife attractions every year?
      A. 20 million.   B. 6 million.  C. 4 million.  D. 80 million.
    4. Why will TripAdvisor stop selling tickets for wildlife activities?
      A. They can’t make much money from wildlife activities.
      B. TripAdvisor wants to do business in other areas.
      C. It is dangerous for people to take wildlife activities.
      D. Those activities are bad for wildlife animals.

    Dear Amy,

I couldn’t read your two e-mails until today because my computer was broken. I’m sorry to hearabout your problem, but I’m glad you’re feeling better and are recovering (康复). I’m surprised that in China someone’s liver (肝脏) matched yours! This is really a moving story—a stranger donated part of his liver to a girl he doesn’t even know!

You’re right. We shouldn’t care too much about our weight. I’m happy you stopped taking those losing-weight pills. From your photo I can see you are now looking very well in the hospital. To keep slim is important, especially for an actress, but nothing is more important than health. Your doctor’s advice is indeed very good—exercise for at least half an hour every day and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.

It’s not only in your country. It’s the same here with us Chinese—many people are always going on diets or taking losing-weight pills, which are often dangerous. But in fact, some of them are not overweight at all. I hope these people can learn something from your story. Hope you will leave hospital as soon as possible.

    Love,

    Helen
