“The movie American Sniper is on. ”I said to my husband.
We decided to watch, thinking it would take our minds off my husband’s situation at work. He had been working with the same organization for about twenty-three years, and the management,he suspected, was preparing to let him go. The signs were pretty clear and I felt his pain.
I wondered if American Sniper was the wrong movie to watch and considered changing the channel. Maybe something lighter was good. A family comedy with laughter would have been more uplifting for my husband.
We turned the volume down as our son James was studying in the next room.
“You know this movie is based on a true story,”I said, half thinking about my husband’s situation and half watching the movie.
“Yes. ”he replied. “It’s based on Chris Kyle’s book. ”
I thought about all the young men who had lost their lives in Iraq. “Some of those boys were only a couple of years older than James,”I said.
As I watched the movie,I began to realize how small our problems really were. “You know, other couples are wondering if their sons are safe on a battlefield, and here we are with our son perfectly safe in the next room. ”
Over the next hour, the mood in our room changed from depression to gratitude. How fortunate we were ! Our son was healthy and safe. We had a roof over our heads and could walk outside without worrying whether there would be bullets(子弹)flying through the air. As for my husband’s job,he could do something else—something that he would love.
Looking at the big picture and moving from “depression to reflection”have made all the difference.
24.What problem did the author’s family face?
A.The husband would lose his job.
B.The house roof was broken.

A.Get some power from a movie.
B.Be grateful for what we have.
C.Stay strong in the face of difficulty.
D.We can always control our life.

After noticing that her eighth grade students had problems focusing during math class, a North Carolina teacher decided to channel(引导)their energy in a different way-cycling.
It doesn’t sound like the most common thing to do during math class, but Bethany Lambeth, a teacher from Wake County, says that ever since she fixed the cycling machines under her students’ desks, the quality of their work has improved greatly. They are paying more attention to what the teachers say, and most importantly, they are no longer fidgeting all the time.
“Before, they were drumming on their desks or touching other students. They don’t do that any more now. Their feet are getting the movement out,” she said. “There has been a huge increase in the quality of our students’ work and a drop in the amount of missing work. I think the world is changing a lot and kids need to be able to do something different.”
Lambeth fixed the cycling machines at the end of last year, which cost around $150 each. The cost was covered by money from kind people. Not all desks have pedals(踏板)under them, so not all the children have to use one. The school is hoping to get more pedals because of the role cycling machines could play.
The kids clearly love the new “toys”. Sofia Fedele, one of Lambeth’s students, said cycling helped her focus on her work during class. “I usually tap my feet and stuff to keep me focused. I think pedaling is much better. It keeps me exercising and focused,” she said.
Quinn Spear, another student in Lambeth’s class, also mentioned the good effect on health of cycling during class. He told reporters that he had pedaled 5.5 miles and burned 133 calories, all before 10 a.m..
28. What does the underlined word “fidgeting” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Showing interest in class.
B. Doing something useful.
C. Keep moving the body.
D. Taking notes carefully.
29. Why is Quinn Spear mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To show the kids love the machines.
B. To tell us that he has changed a lot.
C. To prove that he is a nice student.
D. To advise readers to follow his example.
30. What is the best title of this text?
A. The school helps students concentrate on class.
B. A new way of exercising is becoming popular.
C. How students in a North Carolina school have class.
D. How a machine changes student’s performance in class.

概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Are you shy?If you are,you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now,scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends,or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people,it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget—if you are shy,you are not the only one.

Dear Sir,
On seeing your notice, I’m more than excited to apply for the position, which I found quite appealing to me.
Owing to studying in the English department, I can talk in English fluently. So there’s no problem for me to communicate with foreigners. In addition, I have served as a receptionist in our school’s 30th anniversary celebration, making myself more competitive and qualified for this position.
In order to practice my speaking skills and gain more experience, I’m eager to be taken on for this job. Looking forward to your early reply.
概要
Shyness is becoming increasingly common and scientists have discovered some reasons. Firstly, shyness can be caused by genetics and family size. Also, one’s birthplace can lead to shyness. For example, Israelis are less shy than Japanese because they worry less about failure. In order to overcome shyness, scientists suggest that you should try something new, talk with others more often and develop your communication skills.
