When her five daughters were young, Helene An always told them that there was strength in unity (团结). To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up.
Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975, they didn't have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny's mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too hard.
Eventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elisabeth explains, "Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business."
Their expanding business became a large corporation in 1996, with three generations of Ans working together. Now the Ans' corporation makes more than $20 million each year. Although they began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success.

Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “peak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!
Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.
At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”
    28. The main purpose of the laptop program is to give each student a laptop to ________.
    A. connect them to libraries B. surf the Internet
    C. work at home D. use for their schoolwork
    29. Which of the following is true about Westlake College? _________
    A. It is an old college in America. B. 1500 students have laptops.
    C. All teachers use computers. D. Students there can do everything.
    30. A window on the world in the last paragraph means that students can ________.
    A. attend lectures on information technology B. get information from around the world
    C. travel around the world D. have free laptops
    31. What can we infer from the passage? ___________
    A. The program is successful. B. We don’t know the result of the program yet.
    C. The program is too expensive. D. The program is not workable.

    D
The 2020 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to former U.S. Poet Laureate (桂冠诗人) Louise Gluck. The prize committee mentioned “her unmistakable poetic voice that with plain beauty makes individual existence universal”. Being the first American woman to win the award since Toni Morrison in 1993, Gluck, 77, joins a list of literary giants and previous Nobelists who include, in this century, Canadian short-story master Alice Munro, Chinese magical-realist Mo Yan, etc.
Gluck’s works include 12 collections of poetry and a couple of volumes(册,卷) of article on literary writing. “All are characterized by trying hard to achieve clarity. Childhood and family life, the close relationship with parents and brothers or sisters is a theme that has remained central to her,” Anders Olsson, the chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said. “She seeks the universal, and in this she takes inspiration from myths (神话) and classical themes,” Olsson added, citing her 2006 collection Averno, which the committee described as “masterly” for its “visionary interpretation of the myth of Persephone’s fall into hell in the captivity of Hades, the god of death”.
As a professor at Yale and a resident of Cambridge, Gluck also served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 2003 to 2004 and is no stranger to awards. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for her collection of poems titled The Wild Iris, in which “she describes the extraordinary return of life after winter in the poem Snowdrops,” the Nobel literature committee said Thursday. She also won the 2014 National Book Award for poetry for Faithful and Virtuous Night. In 2016, President Obama awarded the National Humanities Medal to Gluck in a White House ceremony.
The publicity-shy Gluck did not immediately make any comment about the latest honor for her body of work, which lasts more than half a century. In a recent interview, she acknowledged that prizes can make “existence in the world easier” but did not amount to the immortality (不朽) of a true artist.
    32. What do we know about Gluck in Paragraph 1? ________
    A. She shared her works with other literary figures.
    B. She won the Nobel Prize for her special literary style.
    C. She has been awarded Poet Laureate many times.
    D. She is less well-known than Chinese novelist Mo Yan.
    33. Gluck’s poems mainly focus on __________.
    A. daily life B. quiet countryside
    C. classical myths D. successful careers
    34. What is the purpose of paragraph 3? _______
    A. To show Gluck’s contributions to literature.
    B. To prove Gluck’s strong interest in writing.
    C. To present Gluck’s outstanding achievements.
    D. To stress Gluck’s influence on other poets.
    35. How does Gluck feel about the honor she has received? ________
    A. She is extremely proud of it. B. She takes it very seriously.
    C. She deserves a higher reward. D. She doesn’t value it greatly.

    第二节 (满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday,David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them,he heard the woman yell,“How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.”David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school,David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day,in an English writing class,Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later,David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day,to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs. Brown came into view as soon as he turned to the page where the story was written.
When David read that,he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home,he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the next morning. And again he was praised.
David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs. Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college,he had his first book published. With some more books coming out,he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 开头已给出。

    Dear citizens,
Nowadays, nature is constantly harmed by people, which in turn affects the life of the mankind. Take picnicking for example, fires caused by it have caused great damage to the wildlife and the forest. The rubbish left after the picnic also has negative impacts on the environment.
In order to cope with these problems and protect the ecosystem, we appeal to everyone’s participation in fighting against unfriendly behavior. When getting close to nature, choose areas where tourists are allowed to get in. When having a picnic, never make a fire in the wild, especially in a forest. When returning home, get rid of all the waste you have produced.
Let’s work together and start now! Your action counts.

    第二节:
    Paragraph 1:
Inspired by his own life story,David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not proper. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end,he said,“I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
    Paragraph 2:
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said,“Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy,David felt relieved, hoping his action could make some difference to the boy.
