    Text 10
We are receiving news that next year’s TT races on the Isle of Man have been canceled due to the on-going COVID-19 emergency. The festival, worth about £30 million to the island economy, brings tens of thousands of visitors each year. It has been held every year since 1907 and expected to take place from May 29th to June 12th. (18) Enterprise Minister Laurence Skelly said the “logical decision” to cancel the event for a second year was needed to protect residents and visitors. The 2020 TT Festival was canceled in March, as the first wave of COVID-19 spread through much of Europe. The cancelation of next year’s motor cycle festival is another huge hit for the island’s tourism industry. (19) The border has been closed for months to non-residents as the island government battles to prevent the high rates of COVID-19 seen throughout much of the UK. Mr. Skelly said the government could not commit to “welcoming tens of thousands of people to the island in June”. Resident Anne Rostron, (20) whose husband Brian is a former TT rider, said she could see why the decision had been taken, because it would be “letting everybody in” to the island. Her friend Judith Curtis said there were arguments for and against canceling the event, (20) adding, “It’s going to hit the island again financially, but you’ve got to think about the safety of the people”. James McLaren said although it would be “a disappointment”, it was “better to be safe than sorry.”

Every time Tracy Mccreary, a young mother from London, put her baby daughter Sienna to bed,she and her husband were forced to perform a Mission Impossible style escape. Just walking out of her bedroom would wake her—the noise from their floorboards was so loud that little Sienna would hear it from any room in the house.
“It was really annoying,” said Paul Lanzarotti, Sienna’s father. “We were exhausted and our house wasn’t fun to live in anymore,” Flooring experts told him that the only solution for the noise was to remove the floorboards and replace them at a cost of E 5,000 .
Lanzarotti decided to take matters into his own hands and spent hours on the Internet for a solution. He learned that the noise was caused by friction, which could be stopped if properly lubricated (润滑). Lanzarotti also found out that a chemical compound found in Teflon was one of the world’s best lubricant components.
The determined father discovered that mixing the Teflon compound with an acrylic fluid(丙烯酸流体) could be used to spray the flooring and stop the noise. He then called a chemical company and asked its engineers to produce the spray which he called “Stop Creak”.
“I tested it at home and just couldn’t believe the result. I sprayed it in Sienna’ s room first and the floor was immediately silenced,” said Lanzarotti. “Eight months later, it was still silent. It felt like a huge relief. When Tracy saw the difference for the first time, her face just lit up. You can treat a couple of rooms in an hour.” he added. “It’ s a no-brainer for any parents with noisy floors, and it’ll be life-changing.”
24.What was the problem with Sienna?
A.She made a lot of noise at night.
B.She was too young to walk alone.
C.She was often woken from her sleep.
D.She was afraid of sleeping by herself.
25.Which of the following words can best describe Lanzarotti?
A.Caring and creative. B.Honest and generous.
C.Cautious and friendly. D.Ambitious and sensitive.
26.How did Lanzarotti probably feel after he tried the spray in Sienna’s room?
    A.Amazed. B.Confused.
    C.Frightened. D.Disappointed.
27.What do the underlined word “a no-brainer” in the last paragraph mean?
A.A difficult decision. B.An unusual effort.
C.A real headache. D.An easy job.
    【答案】24.C 25.A 26.A 27.D
根据第一段“Just walking out of her bedroom would wake her—the noise from their floorboards was so loud that little Sienna would hear it from any room in the house.”(只要一走出卧室,她就会被吵醒,他们家的地板发出的噪音太大了,小Sienna从房子里的任何一个房间都能听到噪音)可知,Sienna的问题是经常会被地板的吱嘎声吵醒,故选C。
根据第三段“Lanzarotti decided to take matters into his own hands and spent hours on the Internet for a solution. He learned that the noise was caused by friction, which could be stopped if properly lubricated (润滑). Lanzarotti also found out that a chemical compound found in Teflon was one of the world’s best lubricant components.”(Lanzarotti决定亲自处理地板噪音问题,并花了数小时在互联网上寻找解决方案。
根据最后一段““I tested it at home and just couldn’t believe the result. I sprayed it in Sienna’ s room first and the floor was immediately silenced,” said Lanzarotti.”(Lanzarotti 说:“我在家测试了一下,简直不敢相信结果。我先在Sienna的房间里喷了一下,地板立刻安静了下来”)可知,Lanzarotti对喷雾剂的效果感到很吃惊,故选A。
    【27题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词前的“You can treat a couple of rooms in an hour.”

    C
More than a third of small towns in Georgia lost population in the last year alone, highlighting the challenges of reviving rural areas. New census (人口普查) estimates show that Camilla fell below 5,000 residents. Sparks fell below 2,000, and Milan fell to 661 residents for a loss of 7% of its population. All three towns are in South Georgia.
Many of the young people in these communities graduate from high school and don’t come back. “They go to college, whatever, they don’t come back,” said David Bridges, head of its Center for Rural Prosperity and Innovation in Tifton.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s cities are growing, having no problem drawing people from small towns and other cities. Atlanta grew more than 1% in the past year and is now nearing the half-million-resident mark.
The trend of people moving from rural to urban areas is hardly a new one — it’s been going on worldwide for more than a century. But continued population losses have raised questions about whether rural areas can do anything to reverse the tide.
Rural residents can face a number of challenges including access to good jobs, transportation and health care. Manufacturing jobs have dried up in many places, while modernization and new technology means fewer people are needed for farming. And many people are deciding to have smaller families than was typical a century ago.
“The older generation is dying, the younger generation is moving away, and because there are perceived to be fewer business opportunities, financial opportunities, etc. It’s very challenging to get inbound population.” Bridges said.
Demographers (人口学家) expect the shift from rural to urban to continue. But there are some bright spots in rural America still. Jackson County near Athens was recently named one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation by the Census Bureau. Amazon opened a large fulfillment center there a couple of years ago. And Young Harris, near the Georgia-North Carolina border, has grown by more than 80% since 2010.
28.What happened to the small towns mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.Their sizes grew rapidly. B.Their population declined.
C.They drew more residents. D.They raised challenges to locals.
29.Which of the following best explains “reverse the tide” underlined in Paragraph 4?
A.People move from rural to urban areas.
B.Small towns draw people from cities.
C.Rural areas develop their economy quickly.
D.Population continue to grow in urban areas.
    30.Why is David Bridges quoted?
A.To give part of the reasons. B.To draw a conclusion.
C.To show his contribution. D.To offer more evidence.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Jackson County is the best town in the US.
B.Rural towns will keep growing to larger ones.
C.Others will follow the lead of these bright spots.
D.There can be measures to help rural towns grow.
    【答案】28.B 29.B 30.A 31.D
根据第一段中的“More than a third of small towns in Georgia lost population in the last year alone, highlighting the challenges of reviving rural areas.”
根据第四段“The trend of people moving from rural to urban areas is hardly a new one — it’s been going on worldwide for more than a century. But continued population losses have raised questions about whether rural areas can do anything to reverse the tide.”
根据第五段中的“Rural residents can face a number of challenges including access to good jobs, transportation and health care.(农村居民可能面临许多挑战,包括获得好工作、交通和医疗保健)”和倒数第二段““The older generation is dying, the younger generation is moving away, and because there are perceived to be fewer business opportunities, financial opportunities, etc. It’s very challenging to get inbound population.” Bridges said.(“老一辈人正在死去,年轻一代正在离开,而且因为人们认为商业机会、金融机会等越来越少,所以吸引外来人口非常具有挑战性。” Bridges说)”可知,Bridges的话佐证了农村人口流失和难以吸引外来人口去农村的原因。故选A项。

When you put down your pens at the end of college entrance exam, 12 hard years of study will have come to an end. Forget your studies for a while. It’s time to enjoy yourselves!
There are many ways to celebrate this special month of graduation. You can have photos taken with your classmates and teachers, or dine out together and exchange gifts.
High school students in western countries such as the United States and Canada usually have a party to mark their graduation. It is to mark the time when kids turn into young men and women. After the party, teenagers either go to college or find a job. It means they will no longer depend on their parents as before.
At the party, boys usually dress in dinner jackets and bow ties, though many different types of formal clothes are worn. Girls traditionally wear formal dresses, or dress to shock or be noticed, in shiny or brightly colored materials.
Common party activities include dining, dancing, crowning of a ball king and queen, and just talking to friends. In some cases, high school students collect funds for their class party through the four years of their high school.
High schools in or near large cities may rent big rooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, on a pleasure boat. But often costs are cut by simply using the school gym. Students make a lot of efforts to decorate the gym to make the event special. The music played at the party will be the most popular kinds, like rock and hip-hop.
Sometimes teachers and parents also go to the party. But others like to go with friends, to whom they are soon going to say good-bye.
If you like the idea of a party, why don’t you and your classmates organize one for your graduation?

B.tell how the western students spend the last days of high school

D.introduce several ways of the western students’ killing time
33.What does the party mean for western high school students that are about to graduate?
A.They have finished high school and will go to college.
B.These teenagers can find a job to support themselves.
C.They have grown up and need friends’ help.
D.They are adults and will not depend on parents.

Much meaning can be conveyed clearly with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.
Do you have such kind of experience? ___36___, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
___37___. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward other's stare with you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
___38___. But things are different when it comes to staring at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds, his intentions are obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her attention to make her understand that he is admiring her. In fact, continuous eye contact occurs between lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time to show affection that words cannot express.
However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener is attentive. ___39___, as if he tries to control you, you will feel uncomfortable. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. ___40___.

Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings (兄妹) he didn’t get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Jackson, but Jackson was sick at home today.
The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Billy was on the ground wiping at his eyes, but Dexter walked away.
Carter turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on (欺负). The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.
He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.
He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.
“Surprise!” his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air.
“What are you doing in my room? I thought you were sick!”
    “I feel better!”
“What’s on your face? Are you bleeding?”
“No! I’m not bleeding.” Jackson wiped at his face. “It’s probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!” He pointed at the desk in the corner of Carter’ s room.
    注意:
    1、续写词数应为150左右;
    2、请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
Carter looked down at his desk in horror.

    Paragraph 2:
Carter took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist.

    Paragraph 1:
Carter looked down at his desk in horror. His Corvette! Jackson had painted it red. An awful dull shade of red! “Why would you do that?” Carter shouted. “I wanted to surprise you!” Jackson grinned, with his eyes gleaming. Carter could feel the anger growing, bubbling up inside him, his hands curling into fists. Jackson kept saying something, but so angry was Carter that he couldn’t even hear a word. “Do you like it? I tried so hard. Look!” asked Jackson. Red paint was smeared across his face, forehead, even hair. Looking at Jackson, Carter couldn’t help imagining his little brother spending the whole day carefully painting the car.
    Paragraph 2:
Carter took a deep breath and then unfolded his fist. Picturing the scene that Billy sit on the ground wiping at his eyes as his big brother Dexter walked away, Carter stepped toward the table where the car was still drying. Carter wasn’t sure what to say. He didn’t want to lie, but he didn’t want to hurt his brother’s feelings either. Jackson was only trying to surprise him. He could see that now. “Do you? Do you like it?” Jackson insisted. “Every time I look at this car, I’m going to think of you,” Carter responded, a smile stretching across his face. And that was the truth. “Now, we’d better get that paint off your face before dinner.”
