I was scared when a loud noise in my apartment woke me in the middle of the night. I rushed to turn on my bedroom light and discovered it was a cat.
Here’s the thing — I do not have a cat. And this was not the first time this particular cat had demanded my attention.
I immediately calmed down and realized my error —I had left a window open. I approached to entertain my house guest by giving her some treats and scratches under her collar.
Like so many others, I shifted from working in an office to working from home. Living alone can be separate from outside at the best of times. It was around the one-month mark of the lockdown when I heard a meow outside my window. Sitting outside on the grass was a long-haired, golden-colored cat. I opened the window, and this beautiful cat jumped into my home. Her short visit brightened my day.
A few days later, I heard a familiar meow. I saw a name tag on her collar: Mika. On this second visit, I also noticed Mika was cross-eyed, which only made her more lovely.
Over the next few weeks, Mika would stop by occasionally. Sometimes, she only stayed for a few minutes; other times, she would wander around my apartment much longer. Each visit brightened me. Mika even helped me connect with some new neighbors, who asked if Mika was my cat. Apparently, Mika visited them as well.
While the lockdown has been awful, I suspect I might not have ever met Mika if it had not happened. But perhaps she came by at this time because she sensed a need for connection on my part.
While dogs are said to be man’s best friend, a good cat can be everyone’s best friend.
24.What do we know about the cat from the first three paragraphs?
A.She used to go out at night. B.She entered by the window.
C.She annoyed the neighbors badly. D.She liked the author’s treats particularly.
25.How did the author probably feel during the lockdown?
A.Out of place. B.Out of work. C.Heart-broken. D.Absent-minded.
26.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refer to?
A.The open window. B.The lockdown.
C.A need for connection. D.A stay with new neighbors.
27.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.He lives an unusual life. B.He longs for a harmonious society.
C.Keeping cats is rewarding. D.Befriending nice cats is worthwhile.

There is a widespread belief among sleep researchers that many people, especially young adults, regularly obtain skimpy sleep due to work, school, and social activities. The move toward remote work and school has provided a novel opportunity to test this belief.
A new research compared self-reported data on sleep habits from 80 students enrolled in a 2020 summer session course with data collected from 450 students enrolled in the same course during previous summer semesters and suggests that students learning remotely went to bed an average of 30 minutes later than pre-pandemic (疫情前) students. They slept less efficiently, less at night and more during the day, but did not sleep more overall despite the time saved commuting(通勤), working or attending social events. Actually, they have no early classes and 44 percent fewer work days compared to students in previous semesters.
One very consistent finding is a collective delay of sleep timing-people go to bed and wake up later. Not surprisingly, there is also a marked reduction in natural light exposure, especially early in the day. The lack of change in sleep time was a bit of a surprise, as it goes against the assumption that young adults would sleep more if they had the time.
Self-described night owls (夜猫子) were more likely to report a greater positive effect on their sleep, getting to sleep in, instead of waking up early for that morning class, while morning types were more likely to report a negative response to sleeping later than usual.
Sleep plays an important role in immune (免疫的) functioning and mental health, which is why good sleep habits are important. Students and anybody working from home should try to get outside and be active early in the day because the morning light helps strengthen their regular sleep-wake cycle — this should improve their sleep, and allow them to feel more rested and energized during the day.
28.What does the underlined word “skimpy” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Needful B.Effective. C.Insufficient. D.Unnecessary.
29.How's the sleep of online-learning students compared with pre-pandemic students?
A.They sleep more overall. B.They sleep more at night.
C.they sleep less during the day D.They sleep no more than others
30.Whose sleeping habits is more similar to online learners' life?
A.Busy bees B.Night owls C.Lazybones D.Early birds.
31.What suggestions does the author give to people working from home?
A.Rising early to do morning exercises. B.Developing irregular sleep wake cycle,
C.Learning more about immune functions. D.Getting rested and energized during the day.

It seems difficult to explain the persistent success of scientific theories at describing nature. I explore this challenge in my book, What Science Is and How It Really Works. If the history of science teaches us anything, it is that the ability of a theory to predict unobserved phenomena and lead to amazing new technologies is no proof that said theory is “true”.
For example, Isaac Newton’s mechanics enabled surprisingly accurate predictions of other astronomical phenomena, such as Halley’s comet (哈雷彗星) arriving later than normal in 1759 due to the gravitational effects of passing close to Jupiter. Even more impressive, in the early 1800s when astronomers determined that the orbit (轨道) of Uranus failed to match Newtonian predictions, they concluded that Newton’s theory was not wrong; rather, the existence of a previously unobserved planet was proposed and was later found exactly where it was expected to be (and named Neptune).
Such successes of the scientific revolution were so impressive that philosophers developed whole new theories of knowledge to try to explain how scientists appeared to have used observation and reason to discover fundamental truths. In doing so, scientists attempted to dismiss what logicians have known for long: that no amount of correctly predicted effects can prove a supposed cause.
But don’t the successes of Newtonian mechanics prove that the laws Newton proposed must really be true? Otherwise how could the theory have picked a single spot in the vast expanse of the universe and found exactly where Neptune was?
Things do not always work out this way, however. In 1859, astronomers determined that the orbit of Mercury was not behaving, over time, as Newtonian mechanics predicted. So another new planet (named Vulcan) was proposed. Unlike the prediction of Neptune’s existence, this supposition did not pan out; rather, Newtonian mechanics was an incorrect theory in this context. A different scientific theory- Einstein’s theory of relativity—was required to later explain Mercury’s movement.
So, what really helps credibility more? To insist that we know that atoms, black holes, and dark matter are real because of how many observations we can explain and predictions we can make by supposing their existence? Or to simply admit that science cannot support a claim of absolute truth regarding the abstract, unobserved scientific objects and laws that are proposed to govern this world?
One could argue that if scientists don’t bang the gong (锣) of “truth”, then it may only quicken the dismissal of science as just another opinion. However, I would argue that this position does not give the intended audience enough credit, and that claiming absolute truth does more harm than good, not only for the interaction of science with the public, but for the practice of science. If data are important to the sciences, then let us accept the historical data on science itself.
32.Which of the following did the laws of Newton fail to provide accurate predictions for?
A.The planet of Mercury varied in its composition.
B.Halley’s comet arrived later than normal in 1759.
C.Neptune was located where it was expected to be.
D.The Sun had another planet named Vulcan.
33.Why does the writer mention logicians in paragraph 3?
A.To introduce another way of scientific thinking.
B.To imply what mistake scientists may have made.
C.To make a comparison between logicians and scientists.
D.To help explain the cause and effect of certain phenomena.
34.The phrase “pan out”(in paragraph 5) most probably means ______.
A.appear B.be divided C.shrink D.be proved
35.Which of the following statements is the writer most likely to agree with?
A.Only by enough observations can a theory be proved true.
B.Never can we rule out the possibility that a theory is wrong.
C.Einstein’s theory of relativity works better than any other theory in astronomy.
D.Newtonian mechanics doesn’t fit today s context because it was established long ago.

During the Spring Festival, I watch a sci-fi movie The Wandering Earth with my friends. The movie direct by Guo Fan is very popular in China. It is set in 2075, where the earth is no longer safe to live. Unlike most western movies, the heroes do not give up the earth. Instead, they choose to save the earth by send it to another so-like system. I was deep impressed by the three generation of a Chinese family. They devote them to the mission. The movie conveys lots of Chinese values, but I think it is quite worth seeing it.
