Arthur was messy. He didn’t try to make messes, neither did he try to clean up much. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. He was reading a comic book and he was still reading, saying nothing. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that. Mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called.
“There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt !”

A Narrow Escape
There was a huge three-acre pond just a few kilometers from where we stayed. Since moving into our new home in the countryside, my brother, Jim and I used to steal out to the pond where we would meet another friend. Dad had warned us not to venture anywhere near the pond area, especially after a friend informed him that a crocodile had been spotted there. We took no notice of his advice though. This was our favorite hideout and we were certainly not going to give it up.
On this particular afternoon, the three of us had just finished swimming. Jim and Syed were reluctantly making their way towards the spot where they had left their clothes. I stayed back and was bathing in the waist-deep water when I suddenly became aware of ripples (波纹) forming on the surface of the water. I looked at the ripples and my eyes caught a motion in the water. A crocodile, I thought. Then I saw it -its mouth and its two terrible eyes," Jim ..." I whimpered. Then I screamed with all my strength.
Jim turned his head in my direction and immediately recognized the danger. "Get out of the water, Jeff. Hurry! It's just behind you."
I struggled clumsily in the water. After a few ups and downs, I reached the edge of the pond. I looked over my shoulder. Moving swiftly towards me was an enormous crocodile. I froze. Then suddenly I felt a burning pain in my leg. Meanwhile, Jim and Syed screamed and started throwing stones at the crocodile and managed to distract it. The crocodile went for them now. As it opened its jaws, I could see its jagged teeth. I tried to move but a fierce pain shot through me. With the last strength, I struggled out of the pond.

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kirstie, come here," my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. "Henry's book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn't wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother's love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结)as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off to the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, "It's the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey. I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn't use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn't seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带)on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

Last night, my partner John and I went to the levees (堤岸) where I was relearning how to run. He supported on his bike and I went as fast or as slow as my old legs wanted to take me. Ahead of us was a very old man with a plastic bag who seemed to be unable to walk a straight line. John said, “You keep running, and I will check on him.”
John was holding his hand. John told the man, “We are going to come back this way. If you are still here, we will check on you.” The man said he was fine but he was going to stay down for a bit. He was on the ground at the bottom of the levee and off a walkway that backed up into other people’s homes. We ran on for 10-15 minutes or so and turned around.
John rode ahead to see if he was still there. When I got to the spot, there was John and the man. The man didn’t look fine — he was stumbling (蹒跚而行) around and seemed lost.
The man in the meantime tried to climb up the levee and fell again and as he sat there, I walked down. I said, “Hi, my name is Mia, what’s your name?” He laughed and looked at me. I said light-heartedly, “I am relearning how to run. I didn’t realize it was so difficult.” He said, “Oh my son and I run too — yeah it’s not always easy.”
It was starting to get dark. Turns out the man’s name was John also. I said, “Shall we walk together, John?” He said, “Okay.” He didn’t want me to grab his hand or arm to help him, so I said, “I’ll just stand by you if that is okay.” “That’s okay,” he said.
We walked down the levee together with John riding behind. Through our walk he swerved (急转弯) from either side of the levee — I stayed calm and moved to either side casually trying not to look like I was blocking.

No matter how small you are, you can also give help or support to others. I didn5t understand these words until I saw my grandfather weep that day.
I grew up in Southern California, and my family often went to Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and Sea World. The highlight of those park visits for me was always the evening activities» when there would be fireworks.
As I grew older and more observant, I noticed that my grandfather would go missing just before the fireworks were scheduled to start and reappear shortly after they finished. I asked my mother about this and was told that Grandpa didn't like to hear the noise of the explosions. They reminded him of the war and his fellows who died in the war. So every time there was fireworks 9 he would go inside the bathrooms until they were done. I felt surprised because my grandfather was such a strong man.
One summer night, somewhere near my tenth birthday, my family and I exited a ride just in time to hear over the loudspeakers, “In only two minutes, the lights will be turned off around the Rivers of America, and Disneyland will present their fireworks in the skies over the park.” At this moment, Grandpa was just in front of me, and when he heard the announcement, he started jogging ahead without a word to anyone. Without really thinking, I took off after him, against the orders of my mother, who repeatedly called after me to stay with the rest of the family. Grandpa, unaware that I was behind him, tried desperately to walk through the masses of people who were stopped in the street waiting for the show to begin.
As he tried to reach the restrooms, the first shell broke in the skies above us. Grandpa paused and looked up, just looking as if he had been hit by a shot. And then he kept moving forward. As shell after shell burst overhead, he struggled forward and almost fell over before he could sit onto a bench nearby.

Carter enjoyed riding the school bus home. The ride home gave him some time to relax after a busy day of fifth grade. He usually sat alone and enjoyed that too. With four siblings (兄妹) he didn't get much time alone. Sometimes he sat with his younger brother, Jackson, but Jackson was sick at home today.
The bus stopped and the tallest boy in his class, Dexter, stepped off followed by his younger brother, Billy. As the bus pulled away, Carter looked back over his shoulder to watch the boys. Dexter was yelling and waving his hands at his little brother. Billy said something Carter could not hear. Dexter yelled, gave his younger brother a hard shove and knocked him to the ground. Billy was on the ground wiping at his eyes, but Dexter walked away.
Carter turned in his seat, feeling disgusted. He hated seeing little kids get picked on (欺负).The sight of Billy on the ground crying was burned into his memory. He tried to think of something else.
He thought of the model car he was working on at home, a 1967 Corvette. He started building it over a week ago and just finished putting it together last night. Tonight, as soon as he finished his homework, he could start painting the car. That was his favorite part. He already had the perfect color of blue picked out.
He hurried off the bus, ran through his yard, and breezed through the kitchen with a quick hello to his mom. She was making spaghetti, which smelled delicious. He ran up the stairs two at a time and rushed into his room.
“Surprise!” his brother Jackson said, throwing his arms into the air. "What are you doing in my room? I thought you were sick!”
“I feel better!”
"What's on your face? Are you bleeding?"
"No! I'm not bleeding." Jackson wiped at his face, probably just paint. Look! Look what I did!” He pointed at the desk in the comer of Carter's room.

On a beautiful Thursday of this April, Amy and Alan Green took their daughter Abbey out for a walk in the neighborhood. On their way back, Amy picked up a kite for Abbey from the Dollar Tree, blue with rainbows—there are a lot of rainbows decorating homes around the region these days, which helps make life less dull during the coronavirus pandemic.
In the afternoon, Abbey took the kite out for its first flight. At first, the wind was perfect. It took the kite high in the sky. However, suddenly, the wind became much stronger and whipped the kite out of Abbey's hands in a moment. It sailed farther and farther and finally got stuck on the power lines next to a big tree, wrapping itself over and over again around the wires. Since the kite was too high for them to reach, the Greens could do nothing about it. Worried less about the kite than the potential danger it might present to the lines, Amy called National Grid to report the incident.
About one hour later, Mike, a worker from the power company arrived. He carefully unwound the kite line from the wires. After about 10 minutes' effort, he successfully freed it. But unfortunately, as the kite was wrapped so tightly, there was some unpreventable damage. Still, he presented it at the door to Alan Green. As he left, he noticed Abbey took the kite to the backyard. Out of curiosity, he stood there for a while to see how the girl would deal with it. Surprisingly, she dug a hole and buried the kite in a shoebox! Even though he could not see the girl's face clearly, he knew exactly how sad Abbey could be. He really felt bad for her. And it was at that moment that he decided to do something.

Imagine what's in your closet. There might be an old pair of shoes, a worn jacket and a box of junk you wouldn't know how to get rid of. And that's exactly as it should be.
A closet is messy, unorganized, years-long collection of exactly what makes you the person you are. So the tension rose in my chest when my mom recently decided to move because it meant we would have to clean out Dad's closet, nearly a decade after his death. A brain tumor ate away at the parts of the mind and changed the special person—smart, warm and brave into the one who was bound to a chair in hospital. But when your body goes, your closet stays.
In the years after his death, I would sometimes walk into that closet when I was home visiting for the holidays. I had moved into a city many miles away from my mom, starting a life as my mom took pains to slowly evolve her home—upgrading the decorations, sweeping away the dust of grief, and making it once again a place for warmth and gathering.
When I opened the door to Dad's closet last Christmas, I saw so many ties, shirts, and more shoes than I had remembered. And there were the vital things: a handkerchief I'd pull out of his jacket pocket when he lifted me up after arriving home from work, the bright red jacket he'd wear golfing and on family vacations. In the closet, I could remember every detail between us. I worried that would go away when my mom moved. I rolled around nervously in bed in my home. Could I stand to see this closet one last time before Mom moved? Would I find the strength to help clear that stuff out? Then, a shock—I got a call from my mom saying "I cleaned out the closet already." The announcement shocked me completely. What had she thrown out?

Many years ago there lived in Holland a boy named Peter. Peter's father was one of the men who tended the gates in the dikes(堤坝),called sluices. He opened and closed the sluices so that ships could pass out of Holland's canals into the great sea.
One afternoon in the early fall, when Peter was eight years old, his mother called him from his play. “Come, Peter,” she said. “I want you to go across the dike and take these cakes to your friend, the blind man. Remember that you shall be home before dark.”The little boy was glad to go on such an errand (跑腿), and started off with a light heart. He stayed with the poor blind man a little while to tell him something about his walk along the dike-the sun, the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother's wish that he should return before dark. Bidding his friend goodbye, he set out for home.
As he walked beside the canal, he noticed how the rains had swollen the water, and how they beat against the side of the dike, and he thought of his father's gates. “I am glad they are so strong,” he said to himself.“If the dike gave way what should we do? These pretty fields would be covered with water.” As he walked along the dike he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty blue flowers that grew beside the road, or to listen to the rabbits' soft tread as they rustled through the grass.
Suddenly he heard a noise. It was the sound of trickling water! He stopped and looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. Any child in Holland is frightened at the thought of a leak in the dike. Peter understood the danger at once. If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one, and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do. Throwing away his flowers, he climbed down the side of the dike and thrust his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped! “Oh!” he said to himself. “I can keep the water back with my finger. Holland shall not be drowned while I am here. ”
This was all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed. “Come here; come here,” he called. But no one heard him; no one came to help him.
