Arshad had been out window shopping with his parents. That was all they did these days because they didn’t have enough money to afford all the shiny clothes, shoes and other fancy items the windows displayed. Even from a distance, they looked so promising and inviting that one couldn’t help but go over and look at them.
Ever since Arshad’s father lost his business and had to close down his garment shop, Arshad’s family barely had the money to make ends meet. They even had to move to a rented house, which was smaller and was situated in the shabbier part of the city. Unlike his previous house, where he had a big luxurious room all to himself, here Arshad had to share his room and bed with his naughty younger brother who always had the room in a horrible mess.
What was worse, the playground in this neighbourhood was nothing like the one in his previous neighbourhood; the swings were all broken, the monkey bars were all rusted and grimy, and the see-saw(跷跷板) only had one seat. There weren’t even any bookshops nearby where he could spend his free time, flipping through his favourite comic books and novels.
That day, Arshad and his brother were terribly bored when their father decided to take them all out for window shopping. When his father saw the sad look on Arshad’s face, he sat down next to him and said in a solemn tone, “Remember, there are children out there who don’t even have the things you do, like, warm clothes, a roof over their heads, good education and all the delicious meals that your mother prepares for you, three times a day. You should always be grateful for what you have.”
After the trip to the mall, Arshad’s father decided to take his two boys to a government school in their neighbourhood. The children in the school barely had chairs in their classrooms. Instead, they sat on rugged carpets draped over a hard, stone floor. Three or four children shared torn, second-hand books amongst themselves. The playground didn’t even have any swings and there was not even a cafeteria!

As I was coming into Middle School, Grade Six, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same Middle School as me! At first things were great, she introduced me to her fiend, Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was "mad at her and Amy". So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.
Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners in class projects or gym; it was always, "Who gets the privilege(荣耀)of being Jennifer's partner." It was either Jennifer liked me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out. Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one. Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.
I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.
Most of the time we gossiped(传播流言蜚语)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.

It was a rainy November morning. Overcome with anger I knew if I didn’t leave the house soon I would lose my temper with my husband, Joe. As rain came down in sheets, Joe offered to take me to work. I struggled into my jacket, seized my bag and teaching plans and ignored him.
He insisted and reached for his boots. I looked at the piles of newspapers and the dirty dishes sill on the table. “Don’t you have enough to do? I can take care of myself. ” I stormed out, not even kissing him good-bye. Joe shouted after me not to take the shortcut.
Joe and I had been eagerly looking forward to our retirement when a heart attack that past spring forced him to leave his job earlier than we had planned. As the medical bills mounted we realized I would have to continue working full-time while Joe stayed home and took over the housework.
The new arrangement was a disaster. Exhausted after a day of full work, all I wanted was a hot home-cooked meal and a good night’s sleep. However, what greeted me at the table was a microwave package. Sometimes he would serve oatmeal(燕麦)for several nights in a row. One night when I dragged myself to bed, I was terrified to discover Joe had turned our white sheets blue. He told me he had found out how to save on water, soap and electricity. He patted his blue trousers and announced proudly washing everything together was just the secret.
Ten minutes later, ignoring Joe s warning, I turned off the main route. I thought it hadn’t rained enough to flood the road, but as I rounded the corner water rushed across my path. After a few feet, the car got stuck. I opened the door and water poured in. I hurriedly closed the door. I couldn’t risk walking in this. Almost 20 minutes passed. The car began to shake. I got frightened to death when I heard three long honks(喇叭声).

Ashwini was waiting at the door for her children, Amit and Anika. It was the last day of their exams and she had prepared tasty snacks for them.
“Mom, you know Rishit from my class? He always disturbed others during the exam and copied from therm.'
“Hey, let me speak now,” Anika said and kept giggling all the time. “Mom, one of the girls in my class had prepared a matchbox instead of a soapbox."
The kids continued speaking, giggling, and enjoyed pizzas till late evening. Ashwini was pleased to know that her kids shared everything with her, If the kids faced any problem or had an interesting piece of news, they always shared it with their mother. They were not scared of or nervous about their mother.
In the vacation, Ashwini’s elder sister, Sunita, visited their place along with her two kids, Pranjal and Kanchan. Sunita observed Ashwini's friendly behavior with her kids and opposed it.
“What is this, Ashwini? You never scold your kids. They are not scared of you,” She said to her younger sister.
"Sunita, kids should never be scared of their parents. They should feel free when they communicate with parents."
"Weren't we afraid of our parents? Don't you remember you used to be nervous while talking to Dad? Yet we had better communication,” Sunita argued.
“Well, we are not living in the same age. We need to be more open: minded with children now.”
But Sunita was not satisfied with her explanation. She continued complaining about how Ashwini's kids were dependent on her mother for everything.
“Why do you have to prepare different dishes each time when they are hungry? Pranjal directly calls the nearby hotel and places an order. You don't have to spend time on it,”
Until Sunita left, she had almost brain washed Ashwini by constantly reminding her that she was not bringing up her kids properly. When Sunita left, Ashwini let out a sigh of relief,

Not on his route!
On a lazy Sunday morning, 54-year-old Winston Douglas drove his bus along a normally busting but then quiet Ormond Street in the Peoplestown section of Atlanta. A woman using a walker was slowly crossing the street, so Douglas, a driver for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), tapped the brakes as he turned the wheel to the left to go around her.
As he did so, he noticed a muscular young man in his early 20s standing shirtless on the sidewalk. That wasn't all that unusual for a late summer day in Atlanta. What was unusual was that the man was staring at the woman walking across the street.
Douglas was wondering, “Why was he staring at the woman?” Within seconds, he saw the man sneak up behind the unsuspecting woman and rob her of the wallet. The woman fell on the sidewalk because of the force from behind. Realizing what was happening, she cried, “Help! Help!” The man tried to attack her to stop her screaming. But she fought back. The two collapsed onto the road between two parked cars, and the man continued his assault. The bus passengers witnessing the attack gasped. June Jarrett thought she was watching a horror movie come to life. Screaming at him to stop, she said, “You're killing her.” And he looked up at the driver and just continued to assault her. Douglas immediately stopped his bus. Quickly unbuckling his seat belt, he threw open the folding doors and jumped out.

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man called Ben was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man, Leo, had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.
And every afternoon when Ben could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. Leo began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and lightened by all the activity and color of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city could be seen in the distance. As Ben described all this in detail, Leo would close his eyes and imagine the beautiful scene.
One warm afternoon Ben described a parade passing by. Although Leo couldn't hear the band — he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window described it with descriptive words. Each time the nurse saw the warm and touching scene, she was always struck by devoted friendship between these two men. Days and weeks passed.

My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket (the school colors), was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.
I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forwards very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn't earn enough money to feed five children. I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.
One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office. Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it! I don't care who her father is;her grades can't match Martha's at all. I won't lie or falsify (伪造)records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.
But Mr. Boone's voice sounded calm. “Joann's father is not only on the Board (董事会), he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”
Shaking and sad, I, waited a few minutes and walked away.
The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There's been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won't cover the complete cost of the jacket. So if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”
Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said,“I'll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” I cried on the way home.

In my thirty-year teaching profession, one of the best teachers I have ever known is Mr Rowe. I was lucky enough to teach fourth grade together with him.
Mr. Rowe had endless patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I had ever seen. Steven couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He didn’t like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn’t like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe’s classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.
Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him:“Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year.” Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom. So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball during the break. “Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rowe commented, “You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick.” Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball, Steven sat as close to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; when he knew the answer, he raised his hand; when he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful. It was obvious that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.

It was somewhere between spring and summer my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing?” I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom hopped out (快速跳出来) of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist(前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn’t gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name? ”To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.
