When the telephone rings late at night, most women guess it must be one of only four or five people calling. A sister? Maybe. An emergency? Possibly. A mother? Probably not at that time of night. Much more probably it is a close female friend calling to tell you that she is heartbroken because she has split up with her boyfriend again or perhaps simply that a good movie has just started on TV.
At a time when families are spread far and wide and marriages often end in divorce, friendships are becoming more and more important. Erika, a 32yearold lawyer, is strengthened by her tenyear friendship with her married friend Jane. “I was very sick one night, so I called Jane at about 3:00 a.m. to talk about it,” she says. “She was very supportive and even came over to take me to the doctor's.”
As American TV shows like Friends have become more popular, many of us are beginning to see the value of such friendships.TV shows like this tell us that our romantic relationships may not last, but we need to keep in touch with our close friends if we want to survive.
With Erika's family 200 miles away, it is Jane who keeps a spare set of keys to Erika's apartment and waters her plants whenever she is away. “Having Jane around gives me a certain amount of freedom. It is not the kind of thing that you could ask anyone to do, but she knows I would do the same for her.” Jane, who may move to a different city soon, is worried about leaving such a support system of friends. “My friends have more to do with my life than my parents and, therefore, I don't have to spend a lot of time explaining things to them. Friends are more up to date with what is happening.”

How often do you exercise? A new study found that most kids aged 12 to 15 weren't getting enough physical activity. The results were based on about 800 kids. As part of the study, the kids tracked and reported on their own activity levels, and took physical exams.
U.S. fitness guidelines suggest an hour or more of physical activity every day. According to the study, only 1 in 4 U.S. kids get enough physical activity.
“It's certainly worrying to see that our kids have such a limited amount of physical activity each day,” said Dr.Stephen Pont. He is an expert on children's health.
Few kids in the study met the guidelines on physical activity that raises the heart rate and makes people breathe harder. Overall, about 25% said they got an hour of that kind of exercise every day. Kids also reported on which activities they did most often outside of school gym class—basketball for boys and running for girls.
The study found that fat teenagers were less active than normalweight girls and boys. Fat girls were slightly less active than normalweight girls, but levels were similar among overweight and normalweight boys. The study also said that the percent of fat children aged 2 to 19 was 17%, or about 12.5 million kids.
“There's always room for improvement,” said Tala Fakhouri, who was the leader of the study. She also said the results provide useful information to help with fitness campaigns such as Let's Move, which was initiated by Michelle Obama in 2010. To inspire kids to eat right and get in shape, Michelle visits schools and holds exercise events. She also calls on schools to offer regular gym classes.
The study also found kids who get physical education at school may get better grades.

Dear Xiao Wang,
I have received and read your letter,in which you mentioned that you wanted to lose weight by dieting.
It is natural that young girls at your age hope to look beautiful. However, in my opinion, health is more important than beauty. For a student, studying is the first thing to consider while appearance is the second. So do not let others' opinions affect your normal life. However, if you do want to lose weight, it is a good idea to do it by getting more exercise and changing unhealthy eating habits. The most important thing is that you keep a healthy state of mind, as it will help with your study, and will also help you overcome difficulties in dieting.
I hope my advice will be helpful to you and I'm looking forward to your next letter.
Yours,

Text 1
M: Have you seen Tom at all this semester? I used to see him everywhere! But now, he’s never around.
W: Well, he’s got a really heavy course load and he is on the tennis team now!
Text 2
W: Miss Green is a well-known film star, and Joan is famous, too.
M: Do you really think so? I believe that Austen is more famous than either of them and Joan is the last one I’d regard as famous.
Text 3
M: Could you tell me the starting time for both films?
W: The first begins at 6:45 and will last one and a half hours. After a 5-minute break, the second follows.
Text 4
W: Look! The cake is burned again. I already said that I was not good at cooking. I am going to give up.
M: Never mind. Remember what I said. Don’t leave things half-done.
Text 5
M: Forgive the mess in here. You see, we had a party last night. There were a lot of people. They all brought food, and the leftovers are all over the place.
W: I guess it’s pretty obvious what you will be doing most of today.
Text 6
M: Did you hear about the science homework? It’s going to be a lot of work.
W: What’s so hard about it? We just have to make up a survey form related to theories from the class.
M: That isn’t so hard. But we have to find 50 people to fill out the form and then write up a report analyzing the data.
W: It’ll be easy to find 50 people. That actually sounds like fun to me.
Text 7
W: I’m sorry I’m late. I knew we had arranged to meet at 1:30, but the place completely slipped my mind. In the end, I had to phone Mary, and fortunately, she had it in her diary.
M: Oh, don’t worry. I was a bit late too. Mary really has got a bad memory sometimes. I had to ask her four times to bring me the sales report this morning and she finally brought it just as I was about to leave. Sometimes she is bad as an assistant.
W: Never mind. Let’s look at the menu. By the way, you remember you were asking me about that place in Greece and I said I didn’t know? Well, it suddenly came to me in a flash while I was in the bath last night. It’s called Spoulos.
M: Oh, yes, that’s it.
Text 8
M: How’s your summer vacation, Zoe?
W: Well, totally good! I went to Disney! Oh, did I miss something when I was not here at the summer school?
M: Yes. Johanna had moved, and she’s not going to come back to our school anymore. She had a party when it was the last day of the summer school.
W: What! I couldn’t believe that I didn’t make it! Oh, I wish I didn’t go to Disney!
M: Oh well, it’s already past. You can have a party with her if you want to. Even she’s not coming back to school anymore, on the weekend you still can call her and meet her.
W: You’re right! Thanks. Now I feel much better. I will call her this weekend and meet her.
M: OK and if you can, call me, too. I want to see her again.
Text 9
W: Did you have your own room when you were little, John?
M: No, for the first seventeen years of my life, I had somebody else in the room with me.
W: I always wanted my own room, you know, because there were five of us in the family and we always had to share rooms. I had my…my own room the first time when I was about 15 or something.
M: I was very happy when my sister got married because then I could take her room.
W: Oh, really?
M: And for the first time in my life I had my own room, I felt very proud and wrote in my diary, “I will treasure this new freedom!”
W: Well, a lot of my friends had their own rooms when they were very young, some even as babies. How I envied them! But there were only three bedrooms in our house, so we really were…
M: By the way, what do you think of letting a small baby sleep in a separate room?
W: Well, many Chinese parents are astonished at this idea. But I don’t think so.
Text 10
W: Each country has many kind people who volunteer to take care of others. For example, some high school and university students in the US often spend many hours as volunteers in hospital or old people’s homes. They read books for the people or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of the sick people. They clean up their houses or do the shopping. For boys who don’t have fathers there is an organization called “Big Brothers”. University students and other people take these boys to play baseball games and help them get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Each city has a lot of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or take part in other activities. Some of these clubs show movies or have short trips to the mountains, the beaches or the museums. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and university students as volunteers because they can understand the problems of these boys and girls more easily.
Volunteers believe that the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.
