A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.

As a nurse at the cancer care center where I’ve worked for seven years, I’ll do almost anything to make a patient feel better. But when I met Patty at the center, in 2011, she didn’t want my help.
She was a tiny 44-year-old single mom battling an aggressive head and neck cancer. Unlike many of our other patients, Patty was alone during her treatment, but no matter what I did. I couldn't get her to open up. She just buried herself in book or pulled a blanket over her head to fend off conversation.
Eventually I hit on a reliable way to make Patty smile: mentioning her nine-year-old son, Stephen. She'd tell me how well he did in school, how he'd been selected to read a poem he wrote at a local bookstore. She desperately wanted to live for him. With three kids myself, I totally understood how she felt.
After a year and a half of treatment, in August 2012, Patty was told her cancer had spread, and I learned she wouldn't live much longer. My first thought was, “What's going to happen to Stephen?”
Nurses at the center shared stories at their meetings about how bright and unusual the boy was. but no one seemed to know how to resolve the issue of what would happen to him when his mom died. My husband, Michael, who too works at the center, started hearing about Patty and Stephen.
One morning in October, Patty quietly slipped away. Michael and I picked Stephen up after school, drove him to a nearby park, and sat on a bench by a pond. I finally managed to say, “Stephen, we're sorry to have to tell you this, but your mom came to an end this morning.” The sound that came out of his mouth was like nothing I'd ever heard before. This skinny little guy sat between the two of us and just wailed (哀号) and wailed. It was as if his whole world was just destroyed.

Something inside me was telling me what to do. I wanted to help the poor boy. Although I had three children of my own and a modest family income, I decided to adopt the boy. I told my husband what I thought, and he immediately agreed, saying, "That's exactly what I wanted to tell you." I told the boy we would give him a home and take care of him for his mother. The boy nodded, crying.
Finally, we took him home with us. We introduced Stephen to our three children and told them that he would live with us in the future. My children happily accepted and warmly took Steven to visit his new home and discussed making room for Steven. I was glad that my children were so kind and willing to share everything with other children. Stephen soon integrated into our family and lived a happy life with us.

The shark was closer to the surface now, its black eyes almost glowing. They all screamed at Sid, but Sid still didn't move. The shark was getting closer.
Before he had a chance to think, Chet was in the water, leaving Monty and Dewey on the dock. He swam as fast as he could toward Sid, grabbed hold of Sid's arm and pulled him. Monty and Dewey were at the edge of the dock, reaching down for them. Sid lifted himself up, and Chet planted his hands on the dock. Chet was almost out of the water when something caught his leg. “It's got my leg!" Chet screamed. “Pull!" Sid shouted. They pulled until Chet's leg finally came free! Ella’s First Fashion Creation
Ella was wearing a new dress and she felt like a famous model, Even better, it was a dress she made! Her very first piece of fashion!
“What do you think?” she asked her family. They were all gathered at the kitchen table for breakfast. “It’s very pretty. I can’t believe you designed and sewed that all by yourself!” Mom said.“I’m so proud of you! How long did that take?”Dad asked. Ella pulled out her chair and sat down.“Two weeks! But I think I could make the next one faster. I had a few problems.
Ella smiled. She had so many problems making the dress, but right now it was all worth it. It was going to be a great day.
The kids at school weren’t quite as excited about her dress as she thought they would be, but she did get some nice comments from some of the girls, so she was happy about that. The day went by quickly, and before she knew it, she was outside for the last break of the day. What a perfect day, she thought to herself as she swung on the swings.
The school bell rang and the break was over. When the swing was close to stopping, Ella jumped off. When she landed, she heard a loud rip (撕裂). She moved her hand to the back of her dress. It was ripped all the way down the back! Her very first fashion creation fell apart! Ella was so embarrassed.
Ella spotted her teacher, Miss Miller, near the door. Ella took one hand from her dress and waved for Miss Miller to come to her. Miss Miller came up and looked at the back of Ella’s dress.“Oh no! And it is such a beautiful dress!” “I made it myself,” Ella said. “You must be very proud! You did a great job!” “Not really. Or it wouldn’t have ripped.” “Well, that happens sometimes. 参考答案:
1. Miss Miller took off her sweater and helped Ella to pull it on. She helped Ella up and walked her back to the classroom. As soon as she sat down, she heard a girl laughing at her torn clothes. Ella was very sad and felt very defeated. Miss Miller came to Ella and said, "Your clothes are very beautiful. You shouldn't deny yourself because it is broken.". After hearing this, Ella called her mother and asked her mother to pick her up. Because her clothes were broken, she couldn't walk home by herself. When her mother came, she saw what had happened and was distressed.
“We can’t avoid problems,” said Mom. “When the problem arises, we should find a way to solve the problem instead of complaining about ourselves. Now your dress is broken and you just need to sew it”. After saying that, mother took out the sewing bag and handed it to Ella, who took over the sewing bag and nodded to her mother. Then she stitched up the broken part of the dress.

Teen Becomes A Local Hero
When Sydney Raley headed into her weekend shift on Saturday, December 18, she likely expected to do more of the same: Stand at the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile.
In fact. that’s exactly how it started. Sydney Raley has been working at MC Donald’s for about seven months and so far, it’s been her typical after-school job. The day had been mostly normal -making coffee, making drinks, and going into the lunch rush.
But a few hours into her shift. things took a dramatic turn. After handing a customer some of their food, Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman’s face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like crazy and was speechless. Her daughter was in the passenger seat and looked extremely confused and frightened.
Sydney immediately knew she was choking. The first aid training Sydney received more than four years ago hit her. Most 15-year-olds might panic at the sight of this. But not Sydney. Instead, the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman’s daughter to dial 911. Then, she dove through the drive-through window and came to the rescue.
The teen pushed the driver’s side door forcefully open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she dug down deep into her memory bank to recall everything she learned from her Red Cross babysitter class-which she’d taken four years earlier. All that training of how to use the Heimlich maneuver(哈姆立克急教法)immediately kicked in. Still, she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries, it wasn’t quite working. Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot.

She shouted to that man for assistance. The man heard Sydney’s cry and rushed over. Sydney briefed him on the situation, and the man did not hesitate to help the woman. He used the same Heimlich maneuver, but harder than Sydney. And happily, it worked this time, after which the woman threw up the food stuck in her throat and began gasping for air, and she was saved. The woman and her daughter thanked Sydney and the man. Sydney was thrilled to have saved the lady.
The story has made headlines throughout the country. All the media praised Sydney and the man for their bravery, and how calmly she performed the Heimlich maneuver in an emergency. From this story, people realized that everyone should master the Heimlich maneuver in case someone around them choke, so the media called for schools to train students to master skills of the Heimlich maneuver. Some schools have invited doctors and nurses from the emergency department of the hospital to explain the operation of the Heimlich maneuver to students, which has been well received by parents and the community.

The Nunes’s family lived in a friendly community near the woods. It was a normal Wednesday afternoon Mom Araceli Nunes returned home from selling food and drinks along the roadside in Plantersville, Texas. Her business had been fairly profitable and she was happy to see her husband preparing dinner in the kitchen and her 3-year-old son, Christopher Ramirez, playing in the yard. However, when she turned to unload her car, she didn’t notice the kid followed a neighbor’s dog into the woods.
When they couldn’t find Christopher, the panicky family called for help, and within a few hours, 48 different agencies arrived to comb through the area around their home. Their entire community started to help find Christopher. Some walked into the forest and others drove farther away.
After days with no sign of the kid, rescuers feared the worst, but Araceli never stopped hoping for her son’s safe return. At long last, after four long days and nights, the sheriff received a phone call from a man named Tim Halfin.
Tim Halfin’s house was about three miles away. He had heard of the missing boy when he returned home from a business trip. He didn't think a three-year-old could walk that far to where he lived. However, as all the previous searching efforts were in vain, he decided to try his luck around his own house.
Not long after he went out into the woods, he was surprised by what came into his sight. There was Christopher! Aside from being dehydrated and very hungry, the kid was completely unharmed. 【答案】Para. 1:
When Tim picked him up, the kid was still conscious. He wasn’t shaking, neither was he nervous. Tim wrapped the kid with his own jacket and took him home. Not knowing the phone number of the kid’s home, he called the sheriff, who informed Araceli in no time. On getting the exciting news, Christopher’s family immediately rushed to Tim’s house. Araceli couldn’t wait to wrap her little one up in her arms and hug him tightly! Tears of happiness rolled down her cheeks.
Para. 2:
Christopher spent two days recovering at Teras Children’s Hospital before he was taken home. Seeing Christopher running around the house, the family was extremely grateful to all the agencies and volunteers, who had sacrificed their time to look for Christopher and shared their panic and worries. They were especially thankful to Tim who didn’t give up hope when chances seemed to be slim. They knew it well that they couldn’t repay those kind people for what they had done but they decided to pay it forward by lending a helping hand to whoever might be in need of it.

One of my most memorable trips took place during the summer vacation about three years ago, when my sister, my aunt and I took a trip to Spain because we were moving. On the day of the trip, I lay in bed thinking about my friends whom I was going to leave behind and thoughts were flooding in.
When we arrived at the hire station, we seemed to have some problems with our luggage because it was too much for a taxi, so we had to book a van (厢式送货车) to take our luggage to the airport. We waited for a long period to find a perfect van that would fit our luggage.
Before leaving, I felt very bad because I was going to a different country and was going to miss all my friends and family. I was not comfortable and cried.
The journey was almost perfect at the beginning, but soon it began to rain. Because of the rain, the drivers could not see far away, which caused a huge traffic jam. I was sitting by the window with a can of Coke that I had bought in the store earlier. My aunt and sister fell asleep, and during this time. I felt bored and thought about other things that bothered me. My eyes turned to the mountain in front of us.
A bus suddenly appeared in the picture. It was very close to us. Cars sped past us without any speed limit. Beside me was a very deep lake: I wondered to myself what if something or someone fell inside it. Suddenly, a bus in front of our van stopped, and because it was raining heavily and the van was going fast, no one could see what was going to happen. Then, bang, we bumped into each other. Our van overturned, but luckily, it didn’t fall into the lake. People came to help us get out of the van because we were blocked and the driver was half-dead.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
We struggled to get out of the van and everything we had was gone.

67.One possible version:
We struggled to get out of the van and everything we had was gone. Everything was very strange. I had never had that kind of experience before. It was like watching a horror movie. Some people who were also in the accident started crying, looking for their children, tears beginning to increase. My leg was badly injured. My aunt was calling to seek some help, and my sister was full of injury. It almost seemed that the tragedy was never going to end.
I was losing a lot of blood and then the emergency aid came. They took us to hospital where we were treated. We had to pay for some fees, but we had no money. The doctors and nurses who were present learned of our condition and paid for us. Although we had experienced a bad accident, we were all lucky to have received help from those warm-hearted people. After that we went on with our journey and reached our destination successfully at last.

A New Addition to the Family
For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.
However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.
Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.
Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

Gradually, something changed in the family. After school Victor often found some delicious food and new toys on his desk. When he did his homework, his father came to his room and sat beside him, reading a book quietly, which made him comfortable and warm. At that time, his mother was taking care of his sister Linda. After he finished his homework, his mother asked him to play with Linda. Seeing her sweet smile, he felt so happy.
Victor realized that his parents still cared for him.So he was determined to help his parents take good care of his sister. Passage 5
My father is a practical man. He can’t explain calculus(微积分),but he can tell you how much pressure a boiler needs. He can’t draw an architect’s plan, but he can tell you if the pipes and wiring will sustain the structure. He put himself through night school to become an engineer, but that was only after he worked a slumber, an electrician, and a mechanic.
One day we walked by a toy store window. Sitting in the comer was the most unusual doll-house I’d ever seen. It was shaped liked an upturned log(原木). Little oval windows decorated with nice curtains and framed by tiny balconies were cut into it.
“Oh, Daddy,” I said, “isn’t it beautiful? Do you think Santa Claus will bring it to me?”
Dad looked at the $100 price tag, silent — that’s a rather big figure in those days. “I think even Santa couldn’t afford this house,” he joked, lifting up his belt as he often does when he’s nervous. “Maybe one day, sweetheart.”
On Christmas morning, I awoke early and raced downstairs. In the dim light, I made out a lot of wrapped boxes under the tree — but none large enough to contain my dollhouse. Dad could see my disappointment He pulled me onto his lap and gently told me how, as a boy, he had wanted a red wagon, but his father couldn’t afford one. He said he made his own from wood and old wheels he found. “I’ll make one for you,” Dad assured me.
And right after Christmas, despite all the unfinished projects at home, he started it. I naively(幼稚地)thought it was an easy toy to make, but every step of the long process was considerably more complex than I had anticipated. Night after night, Dad would come home from his job dead tired, yet he’d always find time to work on the log house. In the dark yellow electric light, Dad was always busy creating my dollhouse.

67. I hesitated, wondering if I should help my father. “Then we’ll make one together,” he told me. First, Dad cut leftover board into strips and nailed them in a circle on a wood base, showing me how to make the rough edges smooth. Then he sawed the base in half and attached hinges to one side so the “log” would swing open and shut. He gathered pieces of wallpaper, matching patterns as carefully. He painted the outside with shades of brown, and added a tiny path to the front door--made from real concrete.
In all, it took us one month of hard work. But the log house was the greatest gift a child could ask for. Long after I gave up playing with dolls, I would still sometimes bring it down from the upper floor just to admire it and remember those months I watched Dad bring my dream to life. Dad has spent his life creating, mending and improving the most valued parts of mine. He’s given me the greatest treasure a father can give.
