    A survey conducted recently indicates that the parents who are proud of their children are 20 per cent more than the children who consider themselves as prides of their parents.
    There exist two reasons, which may account for this subtle difference. First, conservative Chinese parents are never accustomed to conveying directly how much they are proud of their kids. This tendency to conceal feelings hardly helps children develop a strong sense of self-confidence. Second, the current educational system excessively emphasizes the value of academic performance, thus forcing children to extensively believe that only by achieving excellent scores can they make their parents proud. This bias unfairly undermines the significance of talents for art and sports, which easily frustrates children and renders them more likely to underestimate themselves.
    Without the genuine encouragement from parents and the reversal of exam-oriented educational methods, a kid would never end up with a positive grown-up.

    As the saying goes, the writing style shows the man. Beautiful and neat handwriting is beneficial, especially to middle school students. Therefore, in my opinion, more emphasis should be placed on this aspect in future.

                        Reading Interests of Senior Middle School Students
    Recently a survey has been done to find out the reading interests of senior middle school students. In this survey,1,200 senior middle school students from 10 schools in Hubei Province were interviewed.
They were asked which they liked reading most among the four categories of English articles: news, stories, popular science articles and articles about learning methods.
    The survey shows that more than half of the students like to read news most. Twenty-six per cent of the students say that English stories are their favorite. Only seven per cent of the students are most interested in reading articles about learning methods. However, the number of students who enjoy reading popular science articles doubles that of those who prefer reading articles about learning methods.

The novel is about the legendary adventures of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang and his three followers who traveled to the “Western Regions”, that is, Central Asia and India, to obtain Buddhist sutras and returned after much suffering.
