Honolulu is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Hawaii, which is located in the Pacific Ocean. It is along the southeast coast of the island of Oahu, and is the westernmost and southernmost major U.S. city. It is a center of international business, finance, hospitality, and military defense in both the state and Oceania. The city has a mix of various Asian, Western, and Pacific cultures.
Temperatures change little throughout the months, with average high temperatures of 27–32 °C and average lows of 18–24 °C throughout the year. Honolulu has an average of 278 sunny days and 89.4 rainy days per year. The annual average rainfall is 17.10 inches, which mainly occurs during the winter months of October through early April, with very little rainfall during the summer. However, both seasons experience a similar number of rainy days. Light showers occur in summer, while heavier rain falls during winter.
As the largest city and airport in the Hawaiian Islands, Honolulu acts as a natural gateway to the islands’ large tourism industry, which brings $10 billion annually and contributes most to the local economy. Honolulu’s location in the Pacific also makes it a large business and trading center. Other important aspects of the city’s income include military defense, research and development, and manufacturing.
Sunny beaches and a sky-blue sea coast make Honolulu a holiday paradise. Honolulu is not only a place of wonderful sights; it is also a shopping paradise. The world’s largest open-air shopping center, Ala Moana Shopping Center is located here, and many international brands and merchandise is represented here. However, it might take tourists lots of time to get there since Honolulu has been ranked as the worst traffic congestion. Currently, there is still no railway system in Honolulu. People often ask if they should share their beds with pets. Before we get to that, let’s think about the other side: Is sleeping with you good for your pet?
“In general, it is a very good thing for animals to sleep with their people.” said Dr. Dana Varble, the chief veterinary officer for the North American Veterinary Community. “Pets who share their human’s bed tend to have a higher trust level and a tighter bond* with the humans that are in their lives. Dogs and cats who are more closely bonded with their humans get additional health benefits.”
Now let’s turn to you—is it good for you to sleep with a pet? Experts have traditionally said no because you might not get quality shut-eye. “Animals may move, bark and interrupt your sleep. Sleep in dogs and cats is not continuous and they will inevitably get up and walk on the bed, stepping on people. All of that activity will lead to sleep fragmentation*,” said Dr. Vsevolod Polotsky, director of sleep research and a professor in the department of medicine.
“These micro awakenings,” which can happen without your awareness, “are disruptive because they pull you out of deep sleep,” said Kristen Knutson, an associate professor of neurology and preventive medicine.
That may be true for many of us, but recent studies have shown that pets in the bedroom could be beneficial for some of us. “People with depression* or anxiety may benefit from having their pet in the bed because they may feel that soft friend decreases their anxiety,” said sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta, an assistant professor of clinical medicine.
The Mayo Clinic’s Center for Sleep Medicine in Phoenix found over half of pet owners seen in the clinic allowed their pet to sleep in the bedroom—and the most found their pet “unobtrusive or even beneficial to sleep.” About 20% however, did believe their pets made their sleep worse. Children may benefit from sleeping with a pet as well. A 2021 study asked teenagers ages 13 to 17 to wear sleep trackers for two weeks and then undergo a sleep test. About a third of the kids slept with a pet, the study noted, which didn’t appear to affect the quality of their rest.

35.Who would probably agree to the idea “It is good for you to sleep with a pet”?
A.Dr. Dana Varble. B.Dr. Vsevolod Polotsky.
C.Kristen Knutson. D.Dr. Raj Dasgupta.
36.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Most pets are not allowed to sleep in the owners’ bedroom.
B.Children are always affected when they sleep with their pets.
C.Sleeping with pets has little effect to people during a deep sleep.
D.Pets in the bed perhaps benefit the people who are often depressed.

Do you enjoy listening to music? What kind of music do you love? Researchers at the University of Westminster have looked at 80 guests on the BBC radio show Desert Island Discs(《荒岛唱片》). The show invites celebrities like well-known actors and film stars to choose eight songs that they would take with them to a desert island. There are no people living on it.
The researchers found that half of the songs that were chosen were linked to important memories from when the show’s guests were between the ages of 10 and 30. Catherine Loveday, who led the study, and other researchers call this time the “self-defining(自我定义) period”, as they think it is when people develop their sense of self.
The study found that the most common reason(17%) guests had for choosing a song was that it reminded them of someone like a parent, partner or friend. The second most common reason(16.2%) was that the song was connected to a period of time. The third most popular reason(12.9%) was the song’s connection to life-changing moments, like finding a partner or going to college.
Loveday said the songs people listen to when they are between 10 and 30 also often influence their taste in music for years to come.
The researchers are now working on a new study that lets people create and share their own Desert Island Discs experience. Through an online survey, people are asked to choose eight songs, a book, and one luxury(奢侈品) that they would take with them to a desert island.

“If you are not fat, you must be a thin man. ” “For every minute of breathing, 60 seconds pass. ” “Why do you say I am lazy? Obviously, I didn't do anything. ”
Nonsense? Yes. These sentences look like they make sense, but they actually express little useful information. They are part of a recent Internet sentence-making craze called “nonsense literature(文学)”.
“Nonsense literature” was originally invented by Internet users to make fun of the empty, fussy(过分讲究的)and redundant(累赘的)writing style often used by media and some famous people. Like any good Internet joke, it became a popular word game. Plenty of “Nonsense literature” has been created. “Every time I don’t know what to say.” “Listening to your words is like listening to words. ”
Some even said that famous writers like Lu Xun used the style. For example, they said, Lu Xun once wrote: There are two trees in my backyard. One is a jujube(枣) tree, and the other is also a jujube tree.
Is it true? Not really. Repetition in writing is not necessarily “Nonsense literature”. Lu Xun’s writing on the jujube trees comes from a piece of his articles. If you have read it, as well as understanding his time of writing, you’d find these repeated lines are powerful, showing that the writer was frustrated(挫败)by social reality.
Actually, “Nonsense literature” and “literature” are two incompatible(矛盾的)words. Nonsense is silly and useless. It will soon be forgotten. But literature is written work considered to have artistic value. It is a spiritual treasure worth passing down.
Internet crazes like “Nonsense literature” might make you laugh for a while. ______. Don’t throw yourself into it. Read some real literature. It will help us stop talking nonsense.

FACTS ABOUT EARTHWORMS
Send us your questions. Dr. Francis Rogers is a doctor who studies animals. Today’s topic is the common earthworm.
why do I sometimes see earthworms on the sidewalk after raining? It’s really
awful to clean them off my shoes. I’ve heard that they die if their holes are filled with water.
Earthworms breathe (呼吸) through their skin, but they’re also able to live for a long time in water. Scientists think that earthworms leave their holes because the rain hits the ground.
I’ve been thinking about starting an earthworm farm. I can make lots of money by selling them to fishermen. I’ve heard that if I cut one in half, each half will grow into another worm. If this is true, I’ll be rich in no time.
I hope you haven’t started cutting yet. That’s only a playground legend. If you cut a worm in half, one half will die and the other half, with the head, may be dead too. Put your knife away and feed your earthworms a lot instead.
Do some people really eat earthworms and why would they want to?
Please don’t throw up, but many people do eat earthworms. In some places, people eat earthworm pies. In other parts of the world, people fry them and some even eat them without cooking. Earthworms are low in fat and high in protein. They’re healthier than eating beef.
16.Who wants to make money by selling earthworms?
A.Donna. B.Francis. C.Sid. D.Sam.
17.Which of the following is TRUE about earthworms?

In the small village of Arbora, Italy, lived an old man named Geppetto.
He lived alone in his small house. When it was late at night, he was often lonely. Every morning, Geppetto went into the forest to collect wood for carving.
“This is a good piece of wood, but it is too small. I can’t make anything out of this.” Geppetto threw the wood on the ground.
“Ouch!” said a voice. “Hey, don’t leave me here! I’m not too small! I am good wood. You can make something out of me!” the voice said again.
Geppetto turned his eyes all around and was very surprised. It was a talking piece of wood! “I must be crazy! It’s only a piece of wood!” Geppetto cried.
“Only a piece of wood? Take me home, sir, and I will show you I am not only a piece of wood.”
Geppetto was worried that he was crazy. But he was also lonely. “This talking piece of wood might know interesting stories or funny jokes,” he said to himself. He decided to take the wood home.
“Hmm, what should I do with you? I could carve you into a flower or a small birdhouse,” Geppetto said.
“What? I don’t want to be carved. That sounds painful!” said the piece of wood.
“Well, if I don’t carve you into something, you will only be a piece of wood.”
“Fine, you can carve me into something. But please, make it something interesting,” said the wood, hopefully. “I don’t want to be a flower. And I don’t like birds. I want to see the world and go on adventures. I want to run, walk and talk. How about a boy? Can you make me into a boy?”
“A boy? Hmm.” Geppetto touched his nose, thinking.
“Yes, please! I promise to be a good boy too,” the wood said. “If you carve me into a boy, that means I will be your son. We can live together and have fun!” It added. In fact, the piece of wood didn’t really want to live with Geppetto. It wanted to travel around the world.
“A boy. Yes, I think that is a good idea.” Geppetto said.

Xue Gailian, 65, has created many works with gourds (葫芦) using pyrography (烙画) in Shanxi Province over the past twenty years. She has also helped her villagers make money with the art form.
Twenty years ago, like most villagers of Wucun village in Shanxi’s Wenshui county, Xue’s family made a living by growing grapes. But they made only a little money because of the local weather and planting environment.
“One day, my husband brought back a good-looking gourd when he returned from outside the county,” she said. “I liked it very much and wanted to keep it. So I made a painting on it.”
Xue has been interested in painting since she was young. After learning and doing some researches, she started to plant gourds on her farm. After a good harvest (收获), she began to try pyrography. The art has been practiced since ancient times.
“At the beginning, I found it was not very easy for me to make good paintings,” she said. To improve my skills, I traveled to Shandong Province and Tianjin to learn from skilled artists.”
Day by day, Xue’s art became well-known in Chinese and foreign markets, including Japan and Singapore. She also set up a gourd pyrography society and has taught more than 100 local people for free.
“In the future, I will introduce more modern planting technology to improve the scientific planting of gourds,” she said. “I will also further research and teach gourd pyrography skills to help villagers improve their lives.”

You’ll need to create a password to do just about everything on the Web, such as checking your email, banking online, logging in WeChat and so on. And while it’s simpler to use a short, easy-to-remember password, this can also cause serious risks to your online safety. To protect yourself and your information, you’ll want to use passwords that are long, strong, and difficult for someone else to guess while still keeping them easy for you to remember.
A strong password is one that’s easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Let’s take a look at some of the most important things to think when setting a password. First, never use personal information such as your name, birthday, user’s name, or email address. This type of information is often publicly available (可获得的), which makes it easier for someone to guess your password. Second, use a longer password. Your passwords should be at least six characters long or even longer. Then, don’t use the same password for each account (账户). If someone discovers your password for one account, all of your other accounts will be in danger.
You can try to use numbers, symbols, and both capital and small letters. You have to avoid using words that can be found in the dictionary. Like “swimming”, it would be a weak password. So random (随机的) passwords are the strongest.
Instead of writing your passwords on paper like books or notebooks where someone might find them, you can use a password manager (a kind of App) to store them safely online. Password managers can remember and enter your password on different websites. That means you won’t have to remember longer passwords. So it is a good and safe way to keep your passwords.
27.The underlined word “this” refers to ________.
A.checking your email B.banking online
C.using a short password D.sharing information
28.According to the passage, “________” is the strongest password.
A.20080618 B.Sywi2008! C.Swimming D.Betty!
29.The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
A.when to store your passwords
B.how to set safe passwords
C.when to remember passwords
D.how to keep passwords safely
30.The purpose of this passage is mainly to ________.
A.encourage people to check emails and banking online
B.help people with setting and storing safe passwords
C.stop people from using their personal information online
D.tell people the differences between easy and difficult passwords

“You can tune a piano, but you can’t tuna fish.” Upon reading the sentence, you’re either laughing, scratching your head or rolling your eyes. Welcome to the world of puns.
A pun is a clever and humorous use of a word or phrase with two meanings, or of words with the same sound but different meanings. For example, in the first sentence, the usage of “tuna” is a pun because it sounds like “tune a”. Of course you can't “tune a” fish, but it's a clever way of using words in an unexpected way.
People generally either love puns or hate them. They have a long history throughout many cultures of the world including ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and China. In the Western world, the English playwright William Shakespeare is probably the most well-known punster.
“They can show how clever you are.” Peter McGraw, the director of the Humor Research Lab at the University, of Colorado in the US said. “It depends on a person’s ability to understand the complexities and small differences of words because puns are a tool to put more meanings into fewer words.”
Puns are used widely throughout popular culture on TV, ad campaigns and marketing. For example, walk down any British shopping street and you will find shops with interesting names, such as a weight-loss centre called “Stop Weighting”, the butcher’s called “Meat You Here” and a fish and chips shop called “The Plaice to Enjoy”.
You can try writing your own puns, but remember, don’t write with a broken pencil because it’s pointless.

A.a special day to get together B.a great place to buy toys
C.a type of sea fish used for food D.a TV programme to learn cooking

Like all mammals, we humans are only able to see light in the visible spectrum, which include all of the colors of the rainbow. This is because the photoreceptors in our eyes are only able to notice light with a wavelength of around 400 to 700 nanometers. That means we can’t see infrared or near-infrared light, which has a wavelength a little bit longer.
And that got scientists thinking. “We’re always curious about if we can use any method to allow us to be able to see near-infrared or infrared light,” said Tian Xue of the University of Science and Technology of China. He reached out to his workmate Gang Han at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, who engineered a really small object he named “up-conversion nanoparticle”. The nanoparticle can be activated by infrared light.
Then they tested their system in mice’s eyes. The nanoparticles fix themselves to photoreceptors in the animal’s retina. There, they take in infrared light and change it to visible green light. This green light is then taken in by the retina and is analyzed by the brain as regular visible light. The improved super-sight allows the animals to not only see in infrared, but also to recognize different infrared patterns. They can use the patterns to guide their behaviors very correctly and effectively.
Han says the improved nanoparticle system did not appear to affect the animal’s original visual abilities. “The treated mice were able to see the light patterns in the daylight conditions, clearly suggesting that nanoparticles work at the same time as usual visible sight.”
The technology, in addition to its possible use in law or military, might even be a cure for color blindness. “And best of all,” Xue notes, “___________, because the nanoparticle can be directly activated by the infrared light itself, and it will remain active for as long as two months before it is replaced.”
A similar infrared improvement could someday allow us humans to break through our natural visual limitations and see things in a whole new light.
33.The visible spectrum includes light with a wavelength of _________ nanometers.

Some white cliffs appear in Denizli Province, Turkey. In them are small, bluey-green pools—it looks as if the snow is melting. In fact, those aren’t icy cliffs—they’re terraces of rocks. Because of its appearance, the site is known as Cotton Castle.
Cotton Castle is more than 325 feet high and nearly 9,000 feet long. There are 17 hot springs at the top and the spring water is between 35℃ and 60℃.
The springs are the reason for Cotton Castle’s unusual appearance. Forced by earthquakes, the mineral-rich water comes up from inside the Earth. When the mineral in the water meets air, it forms a jellylike thing as it makes its way down the cliff. Eventually the jelly dries and hardens into white rocks. Some water also collects to create pools. Because the water cools several degrees as it flows into the pools, it’s possible to swim in these natural hot springs.
The process has gone on for tens of thousands of years. Cotton Castle has been a popular attraction since around 200 B.C., when a king founded a town called Hierapolis near the site. People believed the hot springs had healing powers. By the 1970s, Cotton Castle was so popular that hotels were built nearby, even on top of it.
Unfortunately the construction caused parts of Cotton Castle to break off, and heavy foot traffic turned some pools brown. To avoid any future damage, the government listed it as a protected World Heritage Site. The hotels were soon torn down, and now only some pools are open to visitors. With these steps, Cotton Castle will hopefully be around for many years, its ice-like beauty frozen in time.
29.Which picture shows Cotton Castle?
A. B. C. D.
30.According to the passage, Cotton Castle ________.

A.The beauty of Cotton Castle may remain for a long time.
B.Tourists will not be allowed to visit those pools any more.
C.More hotels and towns will be built around Cotton Castle.
D.Cotton Castle will disappear soon due to people’s damage.

What does your body’s smell show? A lot, as it happens: your age, your diet, your feelings, and if you’re getting sick and if so, with which disease (including COVID-19).
Our body’s smell has three levels, all coming from the skin. At the surface level, we often fight stink with showering. The middle level is affected by diet and environment. Under those levels, we’ll find a person’s baseline smell. It tells detailed information about our health. The key to this personal smell is our MHC genes. “Everyone, unless you have an identical twin, has a unique set of MHC genes.” says smell researcher Rachel Herz.
Studies prove that mothers and babies know each other first by smell. In one experiment, doctors found most of newborns moved toward the pad that smelled of their mothers. Over 90%of new mothers correctly identified their children by smelling baby undershirts, even though they’d spent only 10 minutes to an hour in all with their newborns since birth.
Diseases can be diagnosed by smell too. A trained doctor (or dog) can smell out illnesses, like Parkinson’s disease, malaria and lung cancer. In November 2020, a French-Lebanese team trained 18 dogs to smell out COVID-19 and tested their two best-trained dogs in an airport. The dogs smelled out negative results with 100% accuracy and positive cases with 92% accuracy.
_________. In one study, researchers collected sweat from men participants while they were watching a scary movie. Before that, the men were asked to stay away from smoking, alcohol, smelly foods and other products. Researchers then let women participants get close to these “fear” sweat samples. These women showed that “fear” in their face and eye movements without any awareness.
After the control of COVID-19, the next time you hug a friend, please smell deeply. You’re breathing in a lot of information about them: their mood, what they ate for dinner, their health, even the individual stamp of their personhood. It’s all in your friend’s bodily smell in the air.
33.According to the passage, ________ can influence our baseline smell.
A.our diet B.MHC genes C.our age D.the environment
34.The underlined word “diagnosed” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A.discovered B.caused C.developed D.treated

B.Body’s smell can even show our feelings
C.Body’s smell has good effect on our mood

36.The passage is written to ________.
A.introduce three levels of our bodily smell
B.explain how we fight COVID-19 by smell
C.encourage us to do more research on smell
D.show what information our bodily smell tells

It just hadn’t been a very good week. On Tuesday, Sam’s father lost his job. Then on Wednesday, Sam’s mother announced that the rent (房租) on their apartment was going up. Now it was Friday, and Sam received an invitation from Rosa to her birthday party.
Sam knew Rosa from Adventure (冒险) Club. He knew he would enjoy Rosa’s party, but he didn’t want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little bit of money he had? Sam knew he couldn’t ask Mom or Dad for any money-not this week!
Later that afternoon, Sam noticed a second-hand book sale going on. He went there and had a quick look. Two books caught his eye. The first was a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods, and the second was a book about women explorers (探险家).”Rosa would like these,”Sam thought, “but would it be tacky (蹩脚的) to give her second-hand books for her birthday?”
Sam decided that a second-hand gift was better than no gift at all. Besides, Rosa supported recycling in that way. So, she would probably like it. With his last dollar, Sam bought the books and went home. He felt a little better.
The party was on Saturday. Rosa opened all her gifts and thanked everyone for the nice things they had given her. She paused (停顿) when she opened Sam’s gift, which made him wonder if she liked the books, but nothing was said.
When Sam got home, he opened his e-mail and found this note from Rosa.
Dear Sam,
Of all the gifts I received today, yours was the nicest. How did you know I would love a book about women explorers and a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods? Now I have something to read that will inspire me to follow my dream of becoming an adventurer, and I have a book that I can share with my grandmother. She is getting older and wants to be sure her granddaughter knows how to make the wonderful foods of Puerto Rico. Thank you so much.
Love,
Rosa

Classmates’ laughter, parents’ nagging(唠叨), beautiful music—we can hear all kinds of sounds every day. However, that wasn’t the case with Jiang Mengnan.
At just 6 months old, Jiang lost her hearing after relatives gave her the wrong medicine. To understand others, Jiang learned to read lips and feel vocalization(发声)by putting her hands on her parents’ throats and feeling the vibration(振动)of their vocal cords(声带)when she was a kid. It was a slow, difficult process, but Jiang never gave up. As she got older, Jiang entered a standard primary school to study, which was difficult at first. During lessons, teachers would often turn their backs to students and walk around, so Jiang failed to catch much of what they said. What she could do was copy down everything on the blackboard and study after class.
Her perseverance made her a top student. In 2011, she was admitted to Jilin University in Changchun, Jilin province. After graduating in 2018 with a master’s degree, Jiang furthered her studies in Tsinghua University. Now, the 30-year-old is going to receive her doctorate at the end of this year.
“I’ve received so much help from others over the years. The best way to repay them is for me to do something good for society,” she said. “Because of my hearing loss, I couldn’t be a doctor. Instead, I chose pharmacology(药物学)so I can help reduce people’s pain and hasten their recovery.”
More importantly, she is helping inspire disabled children in her native Hunan province. Beyond to strive for success, she is defying(反抗)the low expectations some in society still place on them. “I tell them to do their best to achieve as much as a so-called healthy person,” she said. “We don’t need to feel inferior because of our flaws(缺陷). Once they try, they’ll find things aren’t much more difficult than for other kids. And sometimes they’ll even do better.”

This year, several young athletes have shone brightly at the Beijing Winter Olympics, giving us a glimpse (一瞥) of their generation’s nature.
Obviously, the young generation is filled with “brave warriors (战士)” who want to challenge (挑战) impossibilities and push boundaries (界限). Freestyle skier Gu Ailing is a good example. After she finished strong in the first two jumps in the women’s free ski Big Air event (自由式滑雪女子大跳台比赛), it was certain that she could get a medal. But instead of playing it safe, the 18-year-old skier pushed herself to the limit. On the last jump, Gu decided to attempt a difficult trick (技巧).
“I have never done the ‘left 16’ before. I hadn’t prepared much for it apart from (除了) two days on the air bag.” Gu told China Daily, “but I felt it was a chance to push myself to the limit.”

When questioned by The Guardian, the “post-00” said, “It doesn’t really matter if other people are happy or not, because I feel I’m doing my best and I’m enjoying the entire process.”
Gu’s good friend, Chinese snowboarder Su Yiming also shares a similar attitude. After he was judged to have lost the gold to Canadian athlete Max Parrot in the men’s slopestyle final, the 17-year-old didn’t feel upset. Instead, he was happy to have the chance to compete with his idol (偶像).

A box of strawberries is left to rot (腐坏) in your fridge. Without any hesitation (犹豫), you throw it away. But it’s more than just strawberries that you are wasting.
The life of a strawberry starts from a seed. A farmer plants it and waters it. Later, people pick it and pack it in a box. A truck takes it far—perhaps 200 to 1,000 km—to a supermarket. Water, labor (劳动), fuel (燃料) and money must all be spent in order for a strawberry to come to you. __________
It’s hard for people to realize how much work goes into the food we eat every day. That makes food waste a big problem around the world. Every year, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted around the world. That’s one-third of the total amount of food we have. In China alone, people waste 35 million tons of food each year, according to CCTV.
As we throw food away, there are still 820 million people living in hunger around the world. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 3.1 million of them die of hunger each year, according to the UN. The COVID-l9 pandemic (新冠) has made the situation even worse. With many countries no longer transporting food to other countries during this time, 10,000 more children are dying of hunger each month, according to the UN.
“Wasting food means wasting natural resources (资源) and missing the opportunity to feed a growing population in the future,” said UN Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General (粮农组织总干事) Qu Dongyu. It’s time to take action now.

1 With holidays abroad on hold, staycation might be popular.
2 In2019, 12.2 billion (十亿) passengers flew on planes around the world. In 2021, it was down to 6.6 billion. What will that number be in 2022 if people can’t travel freely to other countries because of COVID-19? Some people say they have more time and a greater interest in nature and the world that’s closer to them. Others can’t wait to travel abroad to experience different cultures. What do you think? Is it good to travel abroad less?
3 Yes! It’s better for the country and the planet.
4 First, it’s better for the country if people stay where they live and spend money with local businesses and on local famous places. And there is so much to experience and enjoy in the country, we don’t need to go abroad. COVID-19 is a good excuse to stay put. Third, since people stopped flying so much, the world around us has had a chance to breathe. Air pollution is down and water quality is up. Let’s allow the Earth to breathe some more.
5 No! Foreign travel opens up the mind.
6 Traveling overseas opens up the mind to new people, places and cultures. If you go abroad, you get a fresh mind. Besides, the weather is a reason too. For example, the UK does not have enough sunlight, which is important for people’s physical and mental health. One of the great privileges of living in the 21st century is that we can see different cultures and meet all kinds of people, isn’t it?

How does it feel when someone listens to you without stopping or giving their opinion? This is called active listening and it’s a great way to understand other people’s feelings and build trust between friends.
The meaning of active listening
Active listening means trying to understand how someone feels by listening carefully to what they’re saying and by paying attention to their body language (how their face and body express their feelings). The Week Junior reader Annie, aged 11, explains what it means to her. “When my friends tell me something important, I listen to what they’re trying to say. I can tell by their voices and the looks on their faces if they’re upset or happy. This makes me feel like I understand them better.”
The ________ of being active listeners
Listening closely to someone without stopping or giving your own opinion shows that you’re interested in what they’re saying, even if you don’t agree. This helps to avoid mistakes and arguments and can make friendship strong. Samaritans is a charity that supports people by listening to their worries. It says, “Really listening to people makes them feel valued and understood, and being able to listen well to others helps you be someone who others feel they can turn to and trust.”
The ways to be active listeners
Listen carefully to what your friend is saying, and avoid jumping in with your own thoughts and feelings. If you really want to talk, Samaritans suggests making a listening sign like nodding your head instead. Ask questions or say things that need more than a yes or no answer, like “Tell me more”. Try looking for more information about how they’re feeling in their faces and bodies too. “Active listening is a skill and it takes practice,” says Samaritans, “but don’t give up, and remember you can only do your best.”

Emmitt followed his father to Row Eleven, Seats Thirteen and Fourteen. He was so busy taking in the sights at the baseball stadium (体育场) that he wasn’t watching where he was going. He nearly walked into his father’s back. “Sorry, Dad.”
His father laughed, “No problem. Which seat do you want?”
Emmitt looked at the number thirteen on the back of the seat. Thirteen was an unlucky number, and he was going to need some luck if he was going to catch a foul ball (界外球). “I’ll take fourteen.”
As the players took the field, Emmitt started to take pictures. The game was great. But it was missing one thing. A foul ball. Emmitt wanted nothing more than to catch a foul ball. He was hoping he might even get an autograph (签名) or two after the game, and what better thing to get autographed than a foul ball?
Now it was his favourite player Harry “the Hammer Watson”. Emmitt stood up and cheered for him. Harry bat the baseball and Emmitt watched the ball fly into the air...right towards Emmitt! He couldn’t believe it. He was going to catch a foul ball hit by Harry Watson.
“Daddy!” the little girl sitting next to Emmitt cried. “The ball! Catch it!” Emmitt saw the huge smile on the girl’s face. She wanted the ball.
He turned his back to the ball just as it reached his seat. Emmittlearnedd (倾斜) toward his dad and the ball dropped into the hands of the little girl’s father.
“Why did you do that? Emmitt’s father asked. Do you realize who hit that ball?
“Yeah, but look.” Emmitt nodded to the little girl. She was hugging the ball.
“My first game and I got a foul ball,” she said.
“I’m proud of you, Emmitt,” his dad said, “That was a nice thing to do.”

“What’s the meaning of life?” This is a question we all ask ourselves at one point or another. The best answer that I came across was written by the great psychologist (心理学家), Viktor Frankle. He wrote that “The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
When I was a young boy, I gave my life meaning by simply playing, running, jumping, swimming, laughing and riding my bike.
When I went to school, I gave my life meaning by learning, studying hard, getting good grades and trying to make my mom and dad proud.
When I was a teenager, I found meaning in playing sports and hanging out with my friends.
In college, I found my life meaning by deciding what I wanted to study and what job I would prepare for.
When I was working as a teacher, I found meaning in helping to open young minds to new ideas and old wisdom.
When I married and had kids, I found meaning in protecting and watching over those I loved. When I found out both of my sons were mentally handicapped (弱智的), I found meaning in loving them, caring for them and learning so much from them about life, love, patience, faith and joy.
As I grew older, I began to understand meaning isn’t something that comes and goes. We can give meaning to every moment of our lives. We can bring meaning to the thoughts we have. We can bring meaning to the things we do. We can bring meaning to the hearts we touch. All we have to do is to love.
It is love that makes life worth living. It is love that gives life meaning.

In 2021, China’s education system announced a new “Double Reduction” policy (“双减”政策). “Double Reduction” refers to a reduction in the total amount and time of school homework and a reduction of after-school classes.
“The policy really helps me,” Shen Yuzhe, a 13-year-old boy from Beijing said. He is happy that he has less homework than before and he can finish it at school with no need to take it home. “I’m also happy to find there are fewer exams. Besides, teachers now teach at a much slower pace so that we have enough time to understand what we have learned. We don’t need to buy workbooks anymore and the exercises are mainly from the textbook,” Shen Yuzhe said.
“The best thing about the ‘Double Reduction’ is the increased time in after-school activities such as dancing, volleyball and drama. Zhang Hangming from Tianjin is also excited. He has joined a group called“Leadership Development”, learning all kinds of useful skills. He likes it because teachers are also giving them more chances to learn from real life. For example, they went to research plants in a field during a science class. He believes that is a much better way to learn than just studying the books.
Some people welcome the policy while others are still worried. Yu Zhiyue, a middle school student in Jiangsu, still feels tired.“With the ‘Double Reduction’, I have really got less homework to do. But my mother is worried that I will lose the chance to review what I’ve learned in class without enough homework. So I have lots of after-school classes. Since I can only take these classes on weekdays now, weekdays have become especially long and tiring for me. From Monday to Friday, I need to take online classes at home after I come back from school,” she said.“ My parents told me the rules had changed but the competition had not gone away.”

Just like humans, dogs can get overweight (超重的). You might think your fat friend is so cute, but in fact, you’re really harming your dog by allowing it to be overweight. If your dog is overweight, it will have difficulty living a healthy and long life because it may suffer from illness like heart disease.
Your dog became overweight because you fed them with too much food. Unlike humans, dogs will eat until they feel too full. When dogs don’t always know where their next meal is coming from, their natural instinct (本能) is to eat everything that they can find in case they cannot find food again later. In this way, they are unlike cats because cats will control their intake of food and stop eating when they’re no longer hungry. Besides, if you are not walking or exercising your dog, there is a good chance that they’ll put on more weight than necessary.
What can you do for your overweight dog? First, be sure that your dog gets exercise every day. For example, play games in the yard, or take your dog for runs or long walks. These activities add up to lots of fat burning, and they’re good for you, too. Second, stop giving your dog treats. We often don’t think much of treating our dogs, but that can really be the most important cause of the problem. If you must give your dog treats, do try healthier foods like carrots.
Finally, be sure to measure (测量) your dog’s meals exactly by using a measuring cup. You’ll need to know exactly what your dog is eating every day to make sure that the portions (份量) are becoming smaller and smaller.
19.What problem do overweight dogs face?
A.Cleverness. B.Health. C.Instinct. D.Appearance.
20.How are dogs different from cats according to the text?

On a sunny day, a yellow school bus headed to Elver Park in Madison, Wisconsin. The seventh graders brought their rocket (火箭), notebooks, pencils and tools. Two at a time, they waited for their teacher to tell them to start the countdown: 5,4.3.2,1...GO! They were preparing their rocket for take-off.
With the rocket unit, I teach the basic principles (原理) of physics, explains David Ropa. He teaches science at Spring Harbor Middle School. However, he wants his students to know science isn’t just for scientists.
“Kids, like all humans, are doing science all the time,” says Ropa. They discover the world through play whether they’re playing with toys or playing with sand on the beach. They have an idea. They set up a test. They study the results. Then they improve their methods.
Science takes many forms (形式) and helps with more jobs than you may think. Cooks, musicians and gardeners often use the scientific method, though they may not call it science. Their jobs-and many more-use textbook knowledge of science in the real world.
Leslie Hunter is also interested in science. But she’s growing plants, not building airplanes. She stared her own vegetable garden at age eight. Her parents prepared the land, and she was doing all else.

It happened long time ago, but I clearly remember the painful feelings as if it happened yesterday. I had prepared for a project for days, but my manager told me he decided to change another person to do it. I stood there and tried to hold back my tears.
I am sure many of us can think of a sad thing like this in our lives, but we can be cheered by it. The key to our success depends not on the incident, but on how we react to it and the actions we take afterwards. Our success depends on our “growth mindset”, an idea put forward by Carol Dweck. She defined two mindsets: “Growth mindset” and “Fixed Mindset.”
A growth mindset comes from the belief that one’s basic qualities can be developed through efforts. People greatly differ from each other in talents, interests, or personalities, but everyone can change and grow through experiences. However, a fixed mindset comes from the belief that one’s qualities are carved in stone.
Needless to say, a growth mindset can act as a pathway to one’s success. Here are actions that helped me:
Be open to bad feedback. It’s never easy. Let’s accept it, although it hurts!
Have an honest self-reflection. Reflect on what went wrong, why it went wrong, and what could have been done differently. It’s important not to blame others at this stage.
Find a confidant, with whom you can have a heart-to-heart conversation. He will truly guide you to keep your plan.
Believe in yourself and just go for it. Whenever you fail at something, try to tell yourself, “No one has been born doing this, I can too.”
29.The writer mentioned a painful thing in her life to ________.
A.lead in the topic B.explain the theory C.share her feeling D.introduce her last job
30.Paragraph Three mainly tells us ________.
A.how one’s qualities are developed B.why people can grow through experiences
C.what differences people have in their qualities D.how Growth Mindset differs from Fixed Mindset
31.According to the writer, what can we do to develop a growth mindset?
A.Point out other people’s mistakes. B.Ignore other people’s bad feedback.
C.Ask someone to make a plan for us. D.Keep trying bravely with confidence.
32.Which of the following statements about mindsets is TRUE?
A.The two mindsets are unable to turn to each other.
B.A growth mindset can help people achieve success.
C.A fixed mindset believes one’s qualities can be changed.
D.The ideas of the two mindsets were developed by the writer.

It’s a pity that deaf people or those who have hearing problems can’t enjoy music. Now a vibrating suit brings them hope—it can allow them to “feel” music through their skin, rather than hear it.
Designed by the US technology company Not Impossible Labs, the suit consists of a body harness, ankle and wrist straps.
Music is sent to the suit wirelessly. Then the suit is able to translate it into a range of vibrating pulses, which can be felt at a total of 24 contact points all over the body. The users can adjust the intensity of the vibrations.
Chase Burton, 33, a deaf filmmaker from Texas, has been testing out the suit for four years. He understands that a deaf person’s experience with music is very different. “When I was a kid, I’d sit on the floor above our garage so I could feel the vibrations from my brother’s band rocking out below my body.”
Now when he wears the vibrating suit, he says the sound hits different parts of his body. “Maybe it will strike me down in my ankles first. And then I’ll start to feel the vibrations in my back. And then I’ll feel some pulsations in my wrist,” Burton said.
The designers have been working on extending the tactile musical experience to a larger deaf community. In 2016, a dozen prototype suits were tested at Lady Gaga’s concert in the US. The suit was also tested at a special concert in Las Vegas in 2018. It was given to 150 audience members at the concert, where half the audience members were deaf and half could hear.
At the same time, the company has been improving the technology, saying it’s ready to go to market soon. The suit may be used in live sports broadcasts.
“We truly think that anything that has an audio element can also have a vibrational experience associated with it as well,” the company’s talent and business development director, Jordan Richardson said.
33.________ on a vibrating suit can help deaf people “feel” the music.
A.Wrist straps B.A body harness C.Ankle straps D.24 contact points
34.From Burton’s experience, we can know that ________.
A.the lab got the idea of making the suit from him
B.Burton thinks the suit makes him uncomfortable
C.the working method of the suit is suitable for the deaf
D.the suit needs improvement for better musical experience
35.How does the writer prove that the suit is useful?

Do you remember playing stickball or jumping rope in the street? Neighborhood streets used to be children’s playgrounds but traffic was the problem. Now one organization wants to bring those back to kids by temporarily* closing local streets to traffic and letting kids play outside.
Playing is important but community buildings end the fun. So here came Play Streets. Play Streets began in Bristol in 2009 with just one street. The idea grew with its success. It really took off in 2011 with support from The Funding Network and now thousands of people across the UK are taking part in the activity and playing in the streets. Later Play Streets became a global movement and it is spreading like wildfire.
“Our society has changed and communities are having higher levels of isolation* and kids aren’t playing outside as much as before. But Play Streets gives people a place to have street meetings and parties or simply a place to play for a few hours,” Valli Morphett, the chief executive of Co Design Studios said.
You can bring Play Streets to your street in your neighborhood too. Get a group of neighbors together to organize activities and you can even ask local schools to help plan your activities. But you just can’t put up a sign and close your street to traffic. Before you start you should consider the following question to make sure Play Streets will go well. Is the local government supportive? You should do the necessary paperwork with the local government so that rules are followed. The local government is likely to accept the activity and may make it easy to close the street. Once the government agreed, it’s time for fun. Bring toys and supplies, get the word out and get each organizer to take action.
29.The organization created Play Streets mainly because________.
A.it wanted to bring fun of play back to children
B.it hoped children could keep healthy by playing
C.it planned to reduce the pollution caused by traffic
D.it expected people to do more creative indoor sports

C.The support for Play Streets. D.The development of Play Streets.
31.If we want to bring Play Streets to our community, we’d better ________first.
A.get the agreement of the local government

Singapore, as a small island country, has depended mostly on water supplies from neighboring Malaysia for a long time. Low Pei Chin, a water engineer from the government, told reporters from Agency France-Press, “Singapore is short of natural resources. That is why we are always looking for ways to explore water resources. One major plan is to “collect every drop” and “reuse endlessly”.
The government has created a highly developed system that turns wastewater into drinkable water. Reused wastewater can meet 40 percent of Singapore’s water need. The government expects to meet 55 percent of the need by the year 2060.
Most of the water is used for micro-chip producing factories. But some of it is added to the country’s drinking water supplies. The system also helps reduce ocean pollution, as only a small amount of the treated water is sent into the sea. According to the United Nations, 80 percent of the world’s wastewater runs back into the oceans without being treated or reused.
The Changi Water Reclamation Plant on Singapore’s eastern coast is the main part of the country’s recycling system. The system has a network of tunnels and high-technology treatment centers. Parts of the water treatment centers are underground and wastewater enters the center through a 48-kilometer tunnel. In one building, a network of air flow systems has been put in place to keep the water smelling as fresh as possible. When waste arrives at the plant, it goes through cleaning process before powerful pumps send it to areas above ground for more treatment. There, the treated water receives the last process, through which bacteria and viruses are cleared out. Every day, this large center can treat up to 900,000,000 liters of wastewater.
Now the country also continues to enlarge its recycling system. It will add another underground tunnel and a major water treatment center to serve the western part of the island. The government expects work on the center to be completed by 2025. By the time the project is finished, Singapore will have spent about $7.4 billion on its water treatment systems.

The world’s largest open-air shopping center, Ala Moana Shopping Center is located here, and many international brands and merchandise is represented here.

34.What does the underlined word “interrupt” probably mean?
A.control B.disturb C.benefit D.improve
35.Who would probably agree to the idea “It is good for you to sleep with a pet”?
A.Dr. Dana Varble. B.Dr. Vsevolod Polotsky.
C.Kristen Knutson. D.Dr. Raj Dasgupta.
36.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Most pets are not allowed to sleep in the owners’ bedroom.

29.A pun is a form that _______.
A.uses words in a clever and surprising way B.puts words with the same meaning together
C.changes the meanings of the words or phrases D.shows the relationship between pianos and fish
30.From Peter McGraw’s words, we can learn that _______.
A.there are just a few words in one pun B.puns are a tool to know meanings of words
C.differences between two puns are hard to tell D.understanding puns requires intelligent readers

A.100 B.300 C.600 D.900
34.Which of the following shows the correct order of how the nanoparticle system works?
a. The retina takes in green light.
b. The brain analvzes the green light.
c. The nanoparticles stick to the retina.
d. The nanoparticles take in infrared light.
e. The Infrared light is turned into green light.
A.c-d-e-a-b B.c-d-e-b-a C.d-c-e-a-b D.d-c-e-b-a
35.Which of the following can be put in _________?
A.it doesn’t need other kinds of energy sources B.it works for several years once put in the eyes
C.it doesn’t affect human’s abilities to see things D.human eyes work in a similar way as the mice’s
36.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The light in the visible spectrum can activate the nanoparticle.
B.The nanoparticles have been widely applied in law and military.
C.The nanoparticle system may allow humans to see infrared light.
D.The blind will see things clearly with the help of the technology.

A.has 325 hot springs at the top
B.heats the spring water after it flows out
C.is a new attraction near a town
D.is formed after mineral-rich water meets air
31.What’s the writer’s opinion according to the last paragraph?

35.Which of the following can be put in the blank ________ in the passage?
A.Bodily smell cannot tell serious illnesses

The COVID-l9 pandemic (新冠) has made the situation even worse. With many countries no longer transporting food to other countries during this time, 10,000 more children are dying of hunger each month, according to the UN.

Once upon a time, a king went on a visit to neighboring kingdoms. He was gifted a pair of baby macaw parrots, a red one and a blue one, by the king of the last kingdom that he visited. They were the most beautiful birds he had ever seen. So, after returning to his kingdom, he called for a bird trainer and asked him to train the macaw parrots. ①
The king also set a place in the palace garden for the parrots. He often looked at them from his palace window. One day, the trainer came to the palace and told the king that the red parrot was flying high in the sky. However, the other one was not moving from his branch (树枝) since the day he had arrived from the last kingdom the king visited. ②
Hearing this, the king sent for other trainers from the nearby kingdoms. They all tried their best, but couldn’t make the parrot fly! ③ The parrot was not moving from his branch at all. Finally, after trying everything, the king thought that maybe he needed someone who might know their nature well. He asked a courtier (大臣) to get a farmer from the countryside and take him to the parrot to see if he could solve the problem.
④ The next morning, the king was excited to see the parrot flying high above the palace garden. He asked his courtier to call that farmer to meet him. The courtier hurried to call the farmer, who came and stood before the king. The king asked him, “How did you make the parrot fly?”

In 2021, China’s education system announced a new “Double Reduction” policy (“双减”政策). “Double Reduction” refers to a reduction in the total amount and time of school homework and a reduction of after-school classes.

A.They grow more quickly.
B.They get hungry more easily.
C.They will eat too much food.
D.They are less clever than cats.
21.What does the underlined part “the problem” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Being inactive. B.Growing too fat.
C.Eating unhealthily. D.Treating dogs badly.
22.What’s the purpose of the text?

B.To tell us how to raise a dog.

Sometimes, people get nicknames because of their special gifts. We learned about a person whose nickname came from her excellent detective(侦探) work. Her real name was Grace Humistonm but people called her “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes”. You must have seen the character Sherlock Holmes in books, movies and TV shows. Was Mrs.Sherlock Holmes a character who married Sherlock Holmes? No, she wasn’t the famous detective’s wife.
Grace Humiston began detective work in 1906. The family of a missing man came to her for help. Humiston took the case and searched for the man down to the deep south. There, Humiston found illegal camps that forced men to do hard work when they couldn’t pay their debts(债务). Humiston realized that all the men there were reported missing in the north. Humiston entered the camps to know their situations. Then she returned to New York and reported what she had found to the police. The police rescued the missing men and closed the camps.
Another ten years passed before people called Grace Humiston “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes”. In 1917, Ruth Cruger took her ice skates to be fixed at a shop, and she never came home. The police looked into the shop’s owner, Alfredo Cocchi. They quickly ruled him out as a suspect(嫌疑犯).
That’s when the Crugers asked Grace Humiston for help. Humiston found that Alfredo Cocchi had escaped to Italy. So she decided to look into Alfredo Cocchi again. The police had searched Cocchi’s house twice, finding nothing. Humiston searched it again. This time, they found Ruth Cruger dead under the house floor.
That’s how Grace Humiston became known as “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes”. People everywhere celebrated Humiston as an excellent detective. Grace Humiston became a Special Assistant United States Attomey. She was the first woman in history to work in this position. The New York Police Department even made her an official detective.

33.According to the passage, Singapore is a country which _________.
A.is friendly to its neighbour
B.is short of water resources
C.has a quite large population
D.plans to get help from Malaysia
34.The recycled water is mainly used for _________.
A.drinking water B.industry water
C.growing crops D.swimming pools
35.What can we learn about Changi Water Reclamation Plant in the passage?
A.The plant of the system has long tunnels and a large treatment center.
B.The wastewater is cleaned underground in the whole process.
C.900 million liters of wastewater can be cleaned in the center a day.
D.Its network of air flow system can kill the virus in the wastewater.
