When my friend suggested going to the thrift shop, instantly I thought “I hope no one I know sees me”. It was the same when my cousin commented on my new furniture and Japanese fine-bone-china bowls and asked where I got them. They were from the local thrift shop but instead I said “from the antique shop”.
Many people in my Greek-Cypriot community would despise me if I said I shopped at the thrift shop. They may pity me, consider me poor, a failure. Immigrants sacrificed their families and homes for a better life. Buying a house and having enough money to live comfortably, to educate your children and see them also live comfortably, are a big part of the immigrant dream. But has this dream made us materialistic at the cost of our own planet?
Our love for purchasing the latest trendy clothes or furniture, then donating them when we are tired of them has become normal. I was once like this. But after watching the documentary The True Cost I learned donated clothes that don’t get sold are sent to developing nations, many of them ending up in landfills (垃圾填埋地). In addition, your new dress requires electricity and materials to make. But if you buy a second-hand dress, that’s one less dress in a landfill and one less new dress to be made.
A friend introduced me to the thrift shop only a few years ago. My first item was a dress she gifted me. It was lovely and I loved it. Nobody could tell it was second-hand. This opened me up to purchasing more second-hand high quality branded clothes. Once I dropped in on a friend and was impressed by how she decorated her apartment. “It’s all second-hand.” she said. I couldn’t believe it. The truth is a lot of things sold at the thrift shop are in new or almost new condition. That’s when I made the decision to only buy second—hand things.
Selling second-hand things isn’t anything new but what the planet needs is more buyers. There is so much excess production in the world. So stop feeling ashamed, and let’s get shopping.
4. What does the underlined word “despise” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Think highly of. B. Look down upon.
C. Get away from. D. Keep up with.
5. Which following statement is true about people in Greek-Cypriot community?
A. They want to pursue a high standard of material life.
B. They all prefer wearing the latest fancy clothing.
C. They think highly of children’s education.
D. They get along well with their neighbors.
6. What changed the author’s mind to go to the thrift shop?
A. The great variety of the goods in the thrift shop.
B. The low cost of the goods in the thrift shop.
C. The persuasion of the author’s friends.
D. The wasted resources of new products and good quality of the thrift shop.
7. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce a new trend of buying at the thrift shop.
B. To persuade more people to buy at the thrift shop.
C. To encourage more people to pursue the latest fashion.
D. To raise people’s awareness of reasonable shopping.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. B

That’s when I made the decision to only buy second—hand things.”(事实是,在旧货店出售的很多东西都是新的或几乎是新的。就在那时,我决定只买二手物品。)可知,新产品浪费资源,旧货店质量好改变了作者对去旧货店的想法。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Selling second-hand things isn’t anything new but what the planet needs is more buyers. There is so much excess production in the world. So stop feeling ashamed, and let’s get shopping.”(出售二手物品并不是什么新鲜事,但这个星球需要的是更多的买家。世界上有太多的过剩生产。所以别再感到羞愧了,我们去旧货店购物吧。)可知,作者写这篇文章的主要目的是说服更多的人去旧货店购物。故选B。

There’s more evidence that what’s good for your heart is good for your head. A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(强度)exercise have brains that look, on average, 10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.
“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better, ”said Dr. Clinton Wright of the University of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy. Walking, golf, bowling and yoga didn’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss, Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks. Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI. Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
“We found that those with moderate exercise had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results,” the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it. The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.
8. What do we know about the study?
A. It makes people’s heart better than their heads.
B. Running, Swimming and Yoga are regarded as moderate intensity.
C. More than 900 people participated in the Northern Manhattan Study.
D. Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.
9. How did the study team draw the conclusion?
A. By making a comparison.
B. By analyzing the existing data.
C. By recording people’s exercise.
D. By giving examples.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Exercise can prevent people suffering Alzheimer’s disease.
B. Brain training will certainly strengthen people’s memory.
C. Exercise can put off the start of memory decline.
D. The findings fit in with the study of healthy food.
11 What’s the best title for this passage?
A. How to keep mentally healthy
B. Moderate intensity exercise keeps your brain younger
C. Steps to promote your brain performance
D. How to prevent the Alzheimer’s disease
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒第二段第一句“We found that those with moderate exercise had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results”(我们发现,在比较结果时,适度运动的患者比不运动的患者得分更高,衰退速度更慢)可知,研究小组通过比较得出结论。故选A。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段第一句“Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it.”(许多研究表明,运动可能不能预防阿尔茨海默氏症,但可以延缓它。)可知,锻炼可以推迟记忆力衰退的开始。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段最后一句“A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(强度)exercise have brains that look, on average, 10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.”(一项新的研究表明,进行跑步、游泳或做其他中等强度运动的人的大脑平均看起来比终日懒散的人的大脑年轻10岁。)可知,文章主要是讲中等强度运动能让你的大脑保持年轻。故选B。

Researchers from Purdue University have developed a simple printing process that changes any paper or cardboard packaging into a keyboard, keypad or other easy-to-use human machine interfaces(界面). The technology makes use of a special coating that’s resistant to liquids and dust, which allows multiple circuit (电路) layers to be printed on top of the paper without any dirt between the layers. On the other side of the paper, standard ink printing can then be used to point out where the buttons are, and what they represent. When the printed parts of the paper get pressed, they’re able to send signals over Bluetooth to another device—a laptop, for example. You’ve then got a lightweight, foldable keyboard that can be taken anywhere and easily wiped clean when needed.
Researcher Ramses Martinez says this is the first time that a self-powered paper-based electronic device has been displayed. Also, the technology allows the construction of vertical pressure sensors that don’t require an outer battery thanks to their ability to harvest energy from the tap of a finger. The technology can be used together with conventional printing processes. It could be accomplished easily and rapidly to turn cardboard packaging or paper into smart packaging or a smart human-machine interface.
The technology is great. It’s good for the environment because the paper can be simply recycled again. These paper devices are cheap to produce as well—less than $0.25 each, according to the researchers. Potential uses include smart packaging, or where temporary input devices are required.
“I expect this technology to help the user interact with food packaging—checking whether the food is safe to be consumed, or allowing users to sign the package that arrives at home by dragging their fingers over the box to properly identify themselves as the owner of the package.” says Martinez. “Additionally, our group showed that simple paper sheets from a notebook can be transformed into music player interfaces for users to choose songs and play them.”
12. What can we learn from the first Paragraph?
A. The technology can turn any paper into a screen.
B. The keyboard is complicated and heavy.
C. The technology uses the coat with liquids and dust resistance.
D. The keyboard can’t be connected to other devices.
13. What gives the device the power it needs to run?
A. The battery within it. B. User’s touch on it.
C. The power energy stored in it. D. The outer battery.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the technology?
A. Positive. B. Suspicious.
C. Ambiguous. D. Conservative.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. A music player interface created for musicians.
B. The application of a new printing technology.
C. A special coating resisting circuit layers onto paper.
D. A simple printing process making keyboards out of any paper.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D

When it comes to France, its amazing food and wine will naturally make your mouth water. But you are also concerned about putting on weight, eager to get a good workout. ___16___ Then the Medoc Wine and Marathon Festival might be your perfect choice.
Created in 1984, the festival takes its name from the Medoc wine-growing region, north of Bordeaux on France’s Atlantic coast. ___17___ The reason for this lies in its three biggest highlights.
It is a paradise for foodies. The annual festival, held each fall, involves thousands of runners going through a variety of splendid vineyards providing free wine. In the meanwhile water stations are also offered along the way so that runners don’t get too dehydrated(脱水的). ___18___However, better not drink it with abandon, for you can also try some of the local French delicacies, such as oysters, grapes and ice cream and so on, which will definitely tickle your taste buds!
___19___. Each year the marathon has a theme and this year it is ‘superheroes’ – something you just might have to be if you want to finish under the six-and-a-half hour time limit. However, if you simply rush to the finishing line desperately, then you are out, for it is most famous for its relaxing and flexible running time, allowing participants to enjoy the experience rather than try and reach their personal best time.
It is a feast for your eyes. The marathon also requires that runners dress up in colorful costume. You can be whatever character you like, such as knights, wizards, or queens. A winner is to be picked out at the end for the best costume.
What are you waiting for? ___20___ And enjoy the French culture to the fullest!
A. It is a competition for friendship.
B. Feel torn between the two ?
C. It is a match for experience.
D. Come and release your passion with your fellows!
E. So, you can refresh yourself with some water and wine.
F. Since then, it has gained increasing popularity year by year.
G. But who drinks water when having the option of drinking a nice glass of wine instead?
【答案】16. B 17. F 18. G 19. C 20. D

【18题详解】
前文“The annual festival, held each fall, involves thousands of runners going through a variety of splendid vineyards providing free wine.”(这个一年一度的节日,每年秋天举行,有成千上万的跑步者穿过各种各样的优质葡萄园,它们提供免费的葡萄酒。)对应选项G中的“drinking a nice glass of wine”,前文“In the meanwhile water stations are also offered along the way so that runners don’t get too dehydrated(脱水的).”(同时,沿途还设有饮水站,这样跑步者就不会太脱水。)对应选项G中的drinks water,且选项G“但是,当可以选择喝一杯好酒的时候,谁会去喝水呢?”和前文构成转折关系,对应转折词But 。所以选项G切合文意。故选G。
【19题详解】
根据后文“However, if you simply rush to the finishing line desperately, then you are out, for it is most famous for its relaxing and flexible running time, allowing participants to enjoy the experience rather than try and reach their personal best time.”(然而,如果你只是拼命冲向终点线,那么你就被淘汰了,因为它最著名的是放松和灵活的跑步时间,让参与者享受体验,而不是试图跑出自己的最佳时间)可知,此处是指重要的是享受体验,且选项C和前后两段的段首“It is a paradise for foodies.”(它是美食家的天堂。)和“It is a feast for your eyes.”(这是你的眼睛的盛宴。)句式相同。所以选项C“这是为了获得体验的比赛”切合文意。故选C。
【20题详解】
根据后文“And enjoy the French culture to the fullest!”(尽情享受法国文化吧!)可知,此处是号召读者来参与,所以选项D“来和你的伙伴一起释放你的激情吧!”切合文意。故选D。

As the Australian scientists studying alpacas report, these animals have ___37___unique immune response. Scientists used to use them to do research on viruses like HIV. Up to now they ___38___(find) that when infected with COVID-19, alpacas react in a special way.
“Alpacas actually create two different types of antibodies. One bears striking similarities___39___ the type we humans make, and the other is___40___is called nanobodies(纳米抗体),” said Michael James, a researcher ___41___(involve) in the study.
The alpacas produced these nanobodies after researchers put a COVID- 19 viral spike protein(棘突蛋白) into their___42___ (body). It is this protein that allows COVID-19 to infect our cells. The nanobodies, however, stop ___43___ (infect) from happening by blocking the protein.
Although the results look good, it will take some time ___44___ (produce) a vaccine based on the findings. Since the nanobodies are new, more research is required to make sure they are both ___45___ (effect) and safe when they are tried on humans, according to James.

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头与续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a hot July afternoon in Philadelphia. The five boys I was with had grown tired of burning holes in dry leaves with a lens(凸透镜). So when freckle-faced(满脸雀斑的)little Jerry suggested climbing the cliff, the rest of kids all agreed excitedly, except me. I hesitated. I’d been a sickly child most of my eight years and I actually wasn’t as strong as the other boys. But my father’s voice echoed in my ears: “Be brave and active.”
“Come on!” Called Jerry, “Just being sick is no reason to be a coward(胆小鬼).” “I’m coming!” I yelled, and ran along after them. Through the park and into the woods we went, finally we stood beneath the near vertical(垂直的) wall of a small cliff, about 33 feet high. To me it looked like the very symbol of the Forbidden and Impossible.
One by one, the other boys climbed upward, finding handholds and toeholds on rocks. I hung back until the others were partway up. Then trembling and sweating, I began to climb. A hand here, a foot there, my heart racing in my skinny chest, I made my way up and up. At some point, I looked back and was horrified. The ground at the base of the cliff seemed very far below. One slip and I would fall. But the boys were talking loudly and happily above me. In a few minutes they started up to the top while I still struggled and crawled, far behind.
“Hey, wait,” I begged. Sadly, they ignored my request and continued their way to the top, from where they would walk home by an easier route. Before they left, they glanced down at me. “You can stay if you want to”, teased Jerry.
I looked down and a nameless force seemed to be dragging me to fall off. I grasped the rock as the world spun around. I could never climb back down. It was much too far to go, too dangerous.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150词左右
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: However, the way up to the top was even worse—higher, steeper, more challenging.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: I didn’t know how long it had passed until a familiar voice of my father came below.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1: However, the way up to the top was even worse—higher, steeper, more challenging. I would never make it. I heard someone sobbing and moaning; I wondered who it was and realized that it was I. It was no use crying because nobody would hear me. The other boys must have been home. Time dragged terribly. And with each passing minute, my legs and arms grew sore. I was seized by a strong sense of horror and my palms were sweating. Something rolled down my cheeks. It was tears or sweat, or both. The sun disappeared from the sky, and dusk began to gather. The ground below the cliff became dim. You can’t imagine how desperate I was at that time.
Paragraph 2: I didn’t know how long it had passed until a familiar voice of my father came below. I glanced down! It was my dad with a flashlight. But my relief transformed into disappointment. My father stood still and didn’t climb up here and carry me down. “Come on down and take one little step by step. Don’t look down any farther than that first step. Trust me, you can do that, my brave boy!” His comforting tone seemed to have a magic power. Somehow, following his light, I struggled to inch backward, cautiously feel for the rock with my left foot and move my foot down there very slowly. Finally I took the last step down onto the ground and into my father’s strong arms, sobbing a little, and then, surprisingly, feeling a sense of immense accomplishment and something like pride.
