Twelve prized camels have been disqualified from a beauty contest in Saudi Arabia after their owners tried to beautify their looks with Botox(肉毒杆菌素).

Thousands of camels are paraded at the King Abdulaziz Camel Festival to be judged on their shapely lips and humps. The festival, which also features camel racing and camel milk tasting, has combined prize money of $ 57 million.

This year's event has been stuck in scandal after the 20 million Saudi riyals(里亚尔, 货币单位)in prize money for each category tempted some owners to cheat.

The key features in camel beauty are considered to be delicate ears and a big nose. Judges are also looking for perfectly placed humps, muscular physiques and leathery mouths. But there are strict rules against the use of drugs in the lips, or shaved or clipped body parts.

Ali Al Mazrouei, the son of a top Emirati breeder, said Botox was used for the lips, the nose and even the jaw. "It makes the head more inflated, so when the camel comes, it's like Oh look at how big that head is. It has big lips, a big nose', "he said.

In the lead up to the festival, Saudi media reported that a vet had been caught giving camels plastic surgery including Botox injections and reducing the size of their ears.

Chief judge Fawzan Al-Madi said the camel was "a symbol of Saudi Arabia". "We used to preserve it out of necessity; now we preserve it as a pastime, "he said. The camel beauty contest was first held in 2000 and last year was relocated from a remote desert area to a permanent venue north of the capital, Riyadh.

    24. Why did some people cheat in the camel beauty contest?

    A. They wanted to get the big prize.

    B. They intended to show off their camels.

    C. They were proud of their camels' humps.

    D. They expected their camels to win in racing.

    25. What is focused in the fourth paragraph?

    A. The goal of the contest.     B. The rules for the judges.

    C. The standards of judgement.    D. The kinds of different camels.

    26. Which of the following isn't considered a feature of camel beauty?

    A. Big lips.    B. Big ears.    C. Big heads.    D. Big noses.

    27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. Arabians find it tiring to raise camels.

    B. People in Saudi Arabia depend on camels to live.

    C. Saudi government takes the camel festival seriously.

    D. Camels were raised for fun in the past in Saudi Arabia.

Educational products are important to the toy industry. In recent years, parents have shown an interest in STEM related toys-ones that help teach Science. Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

But now, toymakers are working to create products for improving a child's emotional intelligence These toys reportedly not only help raise intelligence in children, but also their emotional quotient, or EQ. Intelligence includes intrapersonal skills—processing information within one's mind-and interpersonal skills, or dealing with other people. Some toys have been made with the purpose of having a child act as a teacher or guide to a companion character.

There is an educational robot called Woobo. If you ask the hairy green robot, "Hi. what's your name?" With a childlike voice, the toy will answer, "Are you trying to trick me? My name is Woobo. "The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them started. Toys that work as companions also aid in social development. Woobo can help a child who has autism spectrum disorder(自闭症谱系障碍). The child can communicate with Woobo and he can follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him to do certain things.

A more low-tech companion is a toy animal called Manimo. The manufacturer says this toy can help reduce hyperactivity in children and improve their ability to pay attention to a subject. Whether it's a snake, dolphin or other animal, Manimos can be placed across a child's arm, chest or neck.

The manufacturer explained that adding deep pressure to the body can help calm a child before bedtime. "The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence, "he said.

It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded(多才多艺的)children.

    28. According to the passage, STEM-related toys are helpful in ______________.

    A. raising a child's intelligence

    B. making a child become a teacher

    C. increasing a child's interest in Science

    D. developing a child's ability to process information

    29. What can educational robots be used to?

    A. Work as a companion to teach a child to be well rounded.

    B. Play tricks on the children and make them happy.

    C. Help a child overcome his behavioral problems.

    D. Work as a parent to look after a child at home.

    30. What does the underlined word "hyperactivity" in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A. The desire to play with toys.    B. The chance to get a companion.

    C. The potential for keeping calm.   D. The difficulty in staying focused.

    31. What can we know from the passage?

    A. The function of an educational robot needs to be proved.

    B. Toymakers are doing great business to meet parents' demand.

    C. Many types of toy robots have been invented to help children grow.

    D. With the help of toy robots, children can develop all kinds of skill.

    D

Scientists think they have the answer to a puzzle that confused even Charles Darwin: How flowers evolved and spread to become the most important plants on the Earth.

Flowering plants, or angiosperms(被子植物), make up about 90% of all living plant species. In the distant past, they outpaced(超过)plants such as conifers and ferns, but how they did this has been a mystery. New research suggests it is due to genome(基因组)size.

Hundreds of millions of years ago, the Earth was dominated(支配)by ferns and conifers. Then. about 150 million years ago, the first flowering plants appeared on the Earth. They quickly spread to all parts of the world, changing the landscape from muted green to a variety of colors.

Why angiosperms were successful and diverse on the Earth has been debated for centuries. Charles Darwin himself called it a "mystery", fearing this apparent sudden leap might challenge his theory of evolution.

Kevin Simonin from San Francisco State University in California, US and other researchers wondered if the size of the plant's genetic material—or genome—might be important. They analyzed data held by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, on the genome size of hundreds of plants, including flowering plants, gymnosperms(a group of plants including conifersand ferns. They then compared genome size with anatomical(结构上的)features

This provides "strong evidence" that the success and rapid spread of flowering plants around the world is due to" genome downsizing".

By shrinking the size of the genome, which is contained within the nucleus(细胞核)of the cell, plants can build smaller cells. In turn, this allows greater carbon dioxide uptake (摄入)and carbon gain from photosynthesis(光合作用), the process by which plants use light energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.

The researchers say genome downsizing happened only in the angiosperms, and this was "a necessary condition for rapid growth rates among land plants"

    32. What do you know about angiosperms?

    A. They are tropical plants in South Asia.

    B. They are rare plants in South Africa.

    C. They are extinct plants in the world.

    D. They are dominant plants on the Earth.

    33. What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Darwin was confident of his theory of evolution.

    B. Kevin Simonin is probably an American biologist.

    C. Simonin works in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

    D. Darwin succeeded in figuring out the flower evolution.

    34. Which of the following contributed to the success and diversity of angiosperms?

    A. The stronger cells.  B. The larger nucleus.  C. The smaller genome. D. The weaker conifers.

    35. Which of the following is the best title?

    A. How Angiosperms Conquered the World?

    B. When Angiosperms Outpaced Conifers and Ferns?

    C. Why Gymnosperms Were Successful on the Earth?

    D. What Puzzles Confused Even Charles Darwin?

    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mat is ten years old and always nervous about something. When the night sneaks up on him, he lies in bed with the blanket tightly up around his chin. The shadows on the edge of the ceiling make him slide deeper under the cover. And tonight is no exception. That's why his mother left the light on in the hallway. To frighten away strange noises.

But that's not all that's wrong with Matt. He is also very unhappy. In the daytime he watches everyone pass by. He notices adults carry their briefcases on their way to work. He even worries about how hard they have to work. He sees ladies holding umbrellas in case the rain comes in the afternoon. He thinks a hurricane or a terrible rainstorm might come.

Matt always thinks the worst. He even lingers behind other children on their way to school. Some play friendly tricks on each other and tease and holler in loud voices. Not Matt. He has very few friends. In fact if he has to think very hard he can't remember more than two. They live on the other side of Truro. So he's pretty much alone.

That day was very special for Matt. He didn't realize that his grandfather was watching him. He saw Matt go to school and waited for him to come out for lunch. He watched Matt eat by himself on one of the benches in the schoolyard.

It was right near one of Matt's favorite squirrels. He watched as Matt motioned the squirrel to come across the yard to sit with him. A black blur raced toward him and then jumped up on the bench to take the peanut treat. Grandfather saw this and was glad.

Over the next few days, Grandfather was able to observe the kindness, which Matt had not only for animals but for people as well. When Sally fell off her bike and cut herself, Matt stayed with her until she was fixed up by her mother.

Most of the neighborhood children took part in a Saturday baseball game with their parents. Matt was watching a few children play ball at Victoria Park.
