Joanna Cole, born on August 11, 1944 in Newark, New Jersey, has been credited to be one of the most popular children’s authors of all time. She has written over 250 books and is famous for writing one of the most popular children's book series. She knew as early as 5th grade that she was interested in writing and science. Cole has owed a large part of her passion to one of her elementary school teachers.
Joanna Cole continued her education by attending the University of Massachusetts and Indiana. She would eventually earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the City College of New York in 1967; after graduation Cole decided to take some education courses to become a librarian at a Brooklyn elementary school in 1967. Eventually, she would take jobs working for Newsweek, Seesaw book club.
Cole’s passion for writing and science was still alive and well during this time. In 197l she decided to write her first book, Cockroaches. She did some research and discovered there had never been a book written for children about cockroaches. So she thought she would be the first.
Cole struck gold when she wrote the first Magic School Bus in 1985. The book would go on to be published the following year and quickly became book series and cartoon series due to its success.
Cole continued to write both non-fiction and fiction books for children. She writes in a way that will hopefully inspire children to think like a scientist. She does this by writing ideas instead of just facts. She also tries to ask questions in her books that require children to think and discover the answers as they read. This creates an engaging experience for children, so it is no wonder why younger readers are hooked on her books.

The over 48,000 orange trees that cover all corners of Seville, Spain, not only fill the city's air with the pleasant smell, or orange blossoms, in spring; they also produce over 16,500 tons of fruit every winter. Though that gives the city the rights to show off for being Europe's top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh. While some are used to make marmalade( 橘子酱) and orange liqueur, most of them end up in Seville's landfills. However, that may change soon thanks to an original idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.
The pilot program is being launched by the city's council and parks department in cooperation with Emasesa, Seville's water supply division. Juice obtained from 38.6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment( 发酵) in an existing methane( 沼气) facility. The methane released from the liquid will be captured and used to drive a generator to produce clean power. To ensure there is no waste, the orange skins, and peels will be used as fertilizer.
"The juice is fructose (果糖) made up of very short carbon chains, and the energetic performance of these carbon chains in the methane facility is very high," said Benigno López, the head of Emasesa's environmental department. "It's not just about saving money, but we're producing added value from waste."
If successful, by 2023, the city hopes to recycle all the oranges and add the electricity generated back to its power network. In trial runs, 1,000 kilos of oranges created 50 kWh of clean energy—enough to fulfill the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled, it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.
The latest program is among the many initiatives being implemented(实施) across Spain to achieve the country's goal of switching its electricity system to renewable sources by 2050 — and if everything goes according to plan, fully decarbonizing(脱碳) its economy can be realized shortly after that.
8.What can we learn about the oranges in Seville from the first paragraph?
A.They are of no value. B.They are tasty when fresh.
C.They are the pride of the city. D.They are the problem for the city.
9.How does the fourth paragraph develop?
A.By giving examples. B.By analyzing cause.
C.By providing statistics. D.By following the time order.
10.What is the author's attitude to the program?
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Indifferent.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.Seville Is Turning Waste into Wealth
B.Seville Is Seeking Market for Oranges
C.Seville Is Contributing to Global Warming
D.Seville Is Dealing with the Electricity Shortage
“Jewel wings fly around like little helicopters until they see preys (猎物), usually smaller flying insects,” said Bellido, a biologist at the University of Minnesota. “Then they dash at their meals in a burst of speed.”
You might mistake jewel wings for their cousins, dragonflies. New research shows that these two insects share something more significant than their appearance, however. In a paper published in Current Biology, Dr. Bellido and the dragonfly colleagues reveal that the neural (神经的) systems behind jewel wings’ vision are shared with dragonflies, with whom they have a common ancestor that lived before dinosaurs. But over the centuries, this brain wiring has adapted itself in different ways in each creature, enabling sharply different hunting strategies.
Jewel wings’ behavior involves attacking what’s directly in front of them, the team found. But recordings made in the lab by Dr. Gonzalez and her colleagues confirmed that dragonflies rise up in a straight line to seize unsuspecting insects from below. Researchers are particularly interested in the neurons (神经元) that send visual information to the wings.
To look closer at the neurons linking vision and flight, the researchers equipped jewel wings with sensors and showed them a video of a moving dot, comparing it with earlier dragonfly research. When a neuron fired, a popping sound filled the researchers’ ears, allowing them to tell exactly which movements-left, right, up, down or some combination-each neuron responded to. Jewel wings best see what’s right in front of them, they found, while dragonflies’ clearest vision is just above them.
The team was interested to find that while jewel wings’ neurons didn’t always respond like those in dragonflies, the number of neurons and organization were similar. That suggests that the system that conveys this information from the eyes to the wing muscles did not evolve recently, but has roots that are millions of years older than the oldest dinosaurs. And that ancient common ancestor likely had already developed remarkable speed in both vision and flight. Then, in the following years, the system has evolved to suit individual insect species.
This shared neural system may be more than 250 million years old, but it is also flexible enough to transform itself to meet the needs of a variety of creatures in different eras and environments, the findings suggest.
12.Jewel wings usually catch their meals ________ them.
A.on the right of B.on the left of
C.straight ahead of D.at the back of
13.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.What actions jewel wings take to catch preys.
B.How jewel wings ‘neurons respond to vision.
C.When jewel wings start to hunt for their preys.
D.Where researchers did the research into jewel wings.
14.What can we learn about dragonflies and jewel wings from the passage?
A.The two insects possess similar neural systems.
B.Jewel wings’ vision is sharper than dragonflies’.
C.Dragonflies ‘brain wiring is the same with jewel wings’.
D.The oldest dinosaurs react as rapidly as the two insects.
15.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To analyse the habits of two similar insects.
B.To tell the difference between dragonflies and jewel wings.
C.To assess the effects of different insects ‘hunting strategies.
D.To present the result of a study on two insects neural systems.
Academic pressure doesn’t necessarily wait until college to become a problem. Over-achieving students who are much younger often have to face burnout, sadness and even nervous breakdowns. 16.
Create a schedule of your priorities and follow it. As the saying goes, “If your destination is unclear, you’ll never know if you’ve arrived.” 17. From time to time check on your progress. Being organized, you are most likely to accomplish more in less time. Besides, you’ll have a feeling of accomplishment. Both results will reduce the academic pressure you may be feeling.
18.There’s nothing so damaging as allowing the pressure to build up within you, because it will stop your ability to produce. Also, simply putting your feelings on paper tends to reduce the pressure’s effects.
Make as many friends as you can, and spend time with people you love and who love you. 19. It tends to keep your mind off of the stress, besides being enjoyable.
If you still find the academic pressure unbearable, consider professional help. Until recently, those who failed to deal with stress often put the blame on the medical workers, but now it’s a recognized way to solve this type of problem. 20. If not, seek help on your own.
Exercise daily. Take a few minutes to walk around the block. If you have more time, work out at a gym or run a mile. There is nothing that can reduce the feeling of stress more than exercise regularly.
A.Take notes of your daily routine on a regular basis.
B.Start a diary in which you detail the pressures you face.
C.Probably you will find such help available at your school.
D.Hopefully, there are always some ways to help deal with it.
E.If something unexpected happens, no one can really stop it.
F.Make it a point to spend time with them at least once or twice each week.

【答案定位】根据画线句下文“The book would go on to be published the following year and quickly became book series and cartoon series due to its success.”

根据第一段“While some are used to make marmalade(橘子酱) and orange liqueur, most of them end up in Seville's landfills.”(虽然其中一些被用来制作果酱和橘子利口酒,但它们中的大多数最终被塞维利亚的垃圾填埋场填埋。)
根据第四段“In trial runs, 1,000 kilos of oranges created 50 kWh of clean energy—enough to fulfill the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled, it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.”(在试运行中,1000公斤的橙子产生了50千瓦时的清洁能源,足以满足五个家庭的日常用电需求。
根据第一段“However, that may change soon thanks to an original idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.”(然而,由于一个利用橙子生产清洁能源的独创的想法,这种情况可能很快就会改变。)以及最后一段“and if everything goes according to plan, fully decarbonizing its economy can be realized shortly after that.”(如果一切按计划进行,经济完全脱碳很快就能实现。) 故选A项。

由第三段的第一句“Jewel wings’ behavior involves attacking what’s directly in front of them, the team found.”和第四段的最后的一句“Jewel wings best see what’s right in front of them, they found, while dragonflies’ clearest vision is just above them.”
由第四段的第一句“To look closer at the neurons linking vision and flight, the researchers equipped jewel wings with sensors and showed them a video of a moving dot, comparing it with earlier dragonfly research. When a neuron fired, a popping sound filled the researchers’ ears, allowing them to tell exactly which movements-left, right, up, down or some combination-each neuron responded to. Jewel wings best see what’s right in front of them, they found, while dragonflies’ clearest vision is just above them.”
由第五段第一句“The team was interested to find that while jewel wings’ neurons didn’t always respond like those in dragonflies, the number of neurons and organization were similar.”
由整篇文章内容可知,第二段的第三句“In a paper published in Current Biology, Dr. Bellido and the dragonfly colleagues reveal that the neural (神经的) systems behind jewel wings’ vision are shared with dragonflies, with whom they have a common ancestor that lived before dinosaurs.” 第三段最后一句“Researchers are particularly interested in the neurons (神经元) that send visual information to the wings.” 第四段的第一句“To look closer at the neurons linking vision and flight, the researchers equipped jewel wings with sensors and showed them a video of a moving dot, comparing it with earlier dragonfly research.” 以及第五段的“The team was interested to find that while jewel wings’ neurons didn’t always respond like those in dragonflies, the number of neurons and organization were similar.”

I have known from your letter that you will take Chinese Proficiency Test, which makes you very nervous. That’s quite normal and you are not alone, so don’t worry too much about it.
What you should do is to make full preparations for the test. Firstly, get familiar with the issues related to CPT, including the test targets, test procedures, test content and rules of testing centers etc. What’s more, practice makes perfect. If you practice continuously every day, your language ability will improve steadily.
Good luck. Work hard and I really hope you will get a good score in the text.
