You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?
Jane Addams (1860-1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson (1907-1964)
If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.
Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-present)
When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator (参议员) and, in 1981, the first woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil-rights movement. “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,” said Parks.

My name is Sara. When I was little, I played the drums. I also had a guitar. In fourth grade, I started playing the trombone (长号). I practised about four hours a week. All of this might not seem like a big deal for a lot of kids, but there's something about me that makes me a bit different from others. I was born without hands. Since I was about one year old, I’ve worn prosthetics (假肢).
This year, I got an invitation to join the high school marching band (行进管乐队). I told my mom I wanted to do it. But I had an instructor who thought I would not be able to march in the band — not because it was a high school band and I was only in seventh grade, but probably because my body was different. All I wanted was to show that I could do it, so I joined the band. And it paid off!
Music gives me energy. That happens sometimes. One time I was so down, I didn’t even want to get out of bed. Then I hit my MP3 player by accident. A song came on, and I got up and started dancing. It helped me say to myself, “OK, I can get through today.”
Around my musician friends we all share the same problems, like working out how many beats there are in a measure (小节). I have a hard time counting the beats, but so do a lot of the other kids. It’s a normal problem that we musicians share. When I’m with the band, I don’t feel as different as I do in other situations. It’s just another way that music makes me want to go on, and not to just sit down by myself and not care about life.
24. In what way is Sara different from other kids?
A. There’s something wrong with her body. B. She knows how to play many instruments.
C. She learned to play the drums at a very early age. D. She kept playing the trombone for the longest hours.
25. When invited to join the marching band, Sara________.
A. said no at first B. had no idea what to do
C. followed the instructor’s advice D. believed that she would make it
26. How does Sara probably feel when she’s with the band?
A. Bored. B. Relaxed.
C. Successful. D. Afraid.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A High School Band B. A Young Drummer
C. My Love for Music D. My Magic Hands
【24~27题答案】
【答案】24. A25. D26. B27. C

At just 19 years old, Zara Rutherford has broken two Guinness World Records. She became the youngest female to fly solo around the world and also the first woman to circumnavigate (环游) the world in a microlight.
The Belgian-British teenager landed at an airport in Belgium on 20 January after completing a journey of over 52,000 kilometers, crossing 41 countries and five continents, CNN reported.
With both her parents being pilots, Rutherford started learning to fly at 14 and got her first license in 2020. To make her dream of flying around the world alone a reality, Rutherford sold her car to help pay for the trip and also sought out sponsors (赞助者). They included her former school St Swithun’s School in the UK and more importantly Shark Aero, a manufacturer who provided her a two-seat ultralight (超轻型的) aircraft.
When everything was prepared, Rutherford set off in August 2021 and was supposed to finish the trip in three months. But it was prolonged into nearly half a year due to bad weather and expired (过期的) travel documents.
The most difficult part of the journey was flying over Siberia in Russia. “It was -35℃ on the ground and -20℃ in the air. If the engine broke down, I’d be hours away from rescue and I don’t know how long I could have survived,” Rutherford said during a press conference. She had also encountered storms, wildfires, typhoons, flat tires (轮胎) and broken plane parts.
With this flight around the globe, Rutherford hopes to encourage more young girls and women to consider a career in aviation (航空业). “If you don’t try and see how high you can fly, then you will never know,” Rutherford told CNN.
As Jane Gandee, headteacher at St Swithun’s School, said, her example would serve as inspiration for many more young women around the world.
28. What do we know about Rutherford’s journey?
A. It was completed as scheduled.
B. The engine once broke down.
C. She flew over five continents in about six months.
D. She bought an ultralight aircraft.
29. What was the most difficult part of her journey?
A. Encountering typhoons. B. Escaping from wildfires.
C. Dealing with visa issues. D. Flying over Siberia.
30. Which of the following best describes Rutherford?
A. Tough and inspiring. B. Humorous and confident.
C. Brave and creative. D. Smart and cautious.
【28~30题答案】
【答案】28. C29. D30. A

Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched? Well, you might be right.
According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here.
In order to do this, scientists used a previous method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to determine what places could see us.
The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth, with each light-year equaling 9.4 trillion kilometers. Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years.
“When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already travelled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list.
Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then?
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization would probably not exist anymore.
Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TikTok videos”.
“So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon,” Boss said.
31. How many stars will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years?
A. 1,715 B. 2,034 C. 1,396 D. 319
32. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The oxygen on Earth.
B. Advanced life.
C. A planet circling around one of those 11715 stars.
D. Human-made radio waves.
33. What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss?
A. Human-made radio waves cannot travel far. B. Aliens don’t exist.
C. They cannot understand each other. D. It takes a long time for messages to travel.
34. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To raise reader’s interest in Aliens.
B. To present new findings published in a study.
C. To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars.
D. To explain how messages travel between different star systems.

Playing sports is a lot of fun. Getting hurt is not. ___35___
Wear protective equipment.
The equipment you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets (头盔) are the most common protective equipment. They protect your head while you’re playing football, baseball, softball, skateboarding, and so on.
Warm up.

This works because drivers know the rules and follow them-at least most of the time. ___37___ When players know the rules of the game, fewer injuries happen. For example, you know that in soccer you can’t come from behind, crash into a player’s legs, and steal the ball. It’s legal and safer to go after the ball rather than the player.
___38___.
This is a really important one. If you love sports, you may want to get back in the games, even after an injury. But playing when you’re hurt is a bad idea. ___39___
Now you know how to prevent sports injuries. If you follow these rules, you can stay safer while you are playing sports.
A. Don’t play when you’re injured.

How are you doing? Knowing that you are interested in Chinese traditional festivals, I am pleased to tell you something about the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. The reason why we Chinese celebrate the festival is in honour of Qu Yuan, an honest poet and statesman, who is said to have killed himself by drowning himself in a river. The most important activity of this festival is the Dragon Boat Festival races. Besides, the festival has also been marked by eating zong zi. What’s more, people hang healthy herbs on the front door to clear the bad luck of the house. Although the significance of the festival might be different from the past, it still gives us an opportunity to spread Chinese culture to the world.
Welcome to China. You will have an unforgettable experience if you come to China before this festival. I am looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua
