Back about 20 months ago I started college and just struggled with everything, such as classes and friends. I quickly became depressed and angry at myself for not being about to do better in school, in addition to lack of friends due to poor social and communication skills.

This went on for months until my 19th birthday. My parents sent me a cake, which was a great cake. But I remember having this large cake and absolutely no one to share it with. I ended throwing out the cake after having one piece, with about 90% of it leftover. That night I was so depressed that I decided to go outside to the freezing temperature of the winter and run. I put my earphones in, went outside and ran about 2 miles at 11:00 p. m on my birthday.

When I got back inside I was content. I was proud of what I was able to do. The next night I did the same. I wasn't quick or fit but you know that I went outside and did something. This continued for about 2 months until I finally worked up the courage to go to the gym, where I started swimming again as I used to in high school. A month went by and I started lifting weights and continually running.

Looking back I can see that exercise helped cure my depression but it didn't only do that. At the gym I met new friends and back at my dorm I grew confidence to go to the end of the hall seeing people playing Super Smash Brothers and ask if I could join.

So go forward to present now. I exercise every day and look forward to that hour and a half I get daily to do what I love with people who love it as well. I hope this helps someone who may be or have been in a similar situation.

Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people were always in the right place at the right time, while others consistently experienced ill fortune. I placed advertisements in national newspapers asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky. Hundreds of extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research. Over the years I have interviewed them, monitored their lives and had them take part in various experiments.

In one of the experiments, I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, asking them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper, saying, “Tell the experimenter you have seen this and you will win

$50. " This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two inches high. It was staring everyone in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.

Unlucky people are generally more nervous than lucky people, and this anxiety affects their ability to notice the unexpected. As a result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else. They go to gatherings concentrating on finding their perfect partners and miss opportunities to make good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and miss other types of jobs.

Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. My research eventually showed that lucky people are skilled at noticing opportunities, make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition直觉),are open to new experiences, and adopt a never — say — die attitude that transforms bad luck into good luck.

    28. What's the purpose of the author's research?

    A. To discover what luck means to people.

    B. To find lucky people and unlucky people.

    C. To distinguish between good luck and bad luck.

    D. To figure out why people are always lucky or unlucky.

    29. Why did the unlucky people miss the message in the experiment?

    A. There was too much information to be read in detail.

    B. They were too focused on looking for photographs.

    C. It took too much time to go through newspapers.

    D. The words were too small to be noticed.

    30. What leads to lucky people's good fortune?

    A. Their ability to spot opportunities.

    B. Their ability to become relaxed.

    C. Their ability to communicate.

    D. Their ability to make friends.

    31. What's the main idea of the last paragraph ?

    A. What lucky people are looking for.

    B. How lucky people generate good luck.

    C. What lucky people can do with opportunities.

    D. How lucky people transform bad luck into good luck.

    D

In 2015, a man named Nigel Richards memorized 386, 000 words in the entire French Scrabble Dictionary in just nine weeks. However, he does not speak French. Richards' impressive feat is a useful example to show how artificial intelligence works-real Al. Both of Richard and Al take in massive amounts of data to achieve goals with unlimited memory and superman accuracy in a certain field.

The potential applications for Al are extremely exciting. Because Al can outperform humans at routine tasks-provided the task is in one field with a lot of data — it is technically capable of replacing hundreds of millions of white and blue collar jobs in the next 15 years or so.

But not every job will be replaced by Al. In fact, four types of jobs are not at risk at all. First, there are creative jobs. Al needs to be given a goal to optimize. It cannot invent, like scientists, novelists and artists can. Second, the complex, strategic jobs-executives, diplomats, economists --- go well beyond the Al limitation of single-field and Big Data. Then there are the as-yet-unknown jobs that will be created by AI.

Are you worried that these three types of jobs won't employ as many people as Al will replace? Not to worry, as the fourth type is much larger: jobs where emotions are needed, such as teachers, nannies and doctors. These jobs require compassion, trust and sympathywhich Al does not have. And even if Al tried to fake it, nobody would want a robot telling them they have cancer, or a robot to babysit their children.

So there will still be jobs in the age of AL The key then must be retraining the workforce so people can do them. This must be the responsibility not just of the government, which can provide funds, but also of corporations and those who benefit most.

    32. What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?

    A. To introduce the topic.

    B. To mention Nigel's feat.

    C. To stress the importance of good memory.

    D. To suggest humans go beyond Al in memory.

    33. Which of the following best explains "outperform" underlined in paragraph 2?

    A. Be superior to.

    B. Be equal to.

    C. Be similar to.

    D. Be related to.

    34. Which of the following jobs is the most likely to be replaced?

    A. The writer.

    B. The shop assistant.

    C. The babysitter.

    D. The psychologist.

    35. What does the text suggest people do about job replacement of Al?

     A. Limit 1he application of Al to a certain degree.

    B. Get more support from the government.

    C. Apply. for .the donation from companies.

    D. Upgrade themselves all the time.

    第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

There is no such thing as a “bad memory". 36   , as long as you are not suffering from memory loss as a medical condition. If you want to improve your memory, there are a number of things you can do.

Stop thinking that you have a “bad memory”. 37   . Too many people get stuck here and convince themselves their memory is bad. Erase those thoughts and vow to improve your memory. Celebrate even little achievements to keep yourself motivated.

Exercise your brain. Regularly “exercising" keeps it growing and helps improve memory. 38   . By developing new mental skills—especially complex ones such as learning a new language or learning to play a new musical instrument, you can keep your brain active and improve its physiological functioning.

Give yourself time to form a memory. Memories are very fragile in the short term, and distractions can make you quickly forget something as simple as a phone number. The key to avoid losing memories is to be able to focus on the thing to be remembered for a while without thinking about other things. 39

40    . Often we forget things not because our memory is bad, but rather because our observational skills need work. One way to become more observant is to look at a photo for a few seconds and then describe as many details about it as possible. With regular practice you will find you're able to remember more details with even shorter glimpses of the photos.

    A. Practice your describing skills regularly

    B. So when you're trying to remember something, avoid distractions for a few minutes

    C. Take better pictures

    D. Everyone can improve their memory

    E. A large portion部分of your brain is activated when it learns a new skill

    F. So the more time you spend, the better your memory will be

    G. Convince yourself that you do have a good memory that will improve
