AEvery year, more books on happiness are published. And every year, more people feel depressed because they do not see themselves as happy. They don't remember or know what it feels like, and instead, they feel guilty that they aren't as happy as everyone says they should be. This is really a sad state of emotional affairs. The books, blogs, YouTube videos and advice columns (专栏) will tell you that if you read, exercise, stay busy, help others, and increase your intimacy (亲密) every day, then you too can be happy. The simple truth is that no one can be happy all the time. That doesn't mean you have to be sad, angry, or depressed the rest of the time but that you can find a middle ground called contentment. This middle ground is a good place mentally and emotionally, and spending time there is a healthy choice.Contentment is somewhere between satisfied and peaceful. When you are in that place, the stuff of life can be going on around you, but you don't need to allow it to bother you. And that, my friends, is a very nice way to go through life.I find contentment in walks and in writing, and in talking with my partner and reminding each other that our life is good, despite temporary setbacks or scary moments. Because I know about myself and I can respond differently. Doing this takes away stress and will keep you from losing your state of contentment. If there is even one thing that puts you in a state of contentment — you do it regularly and early enough each day — it will help you go through any challenges you may have to face later.Right at this moment, things around me are still a little out of my control — such is life — but I am feeling pretty good because I actively living my purpose. I am now content, and that feeling will last the whole day through. You can do the same. 1.What does the author want to stress by mentioning “Books on happiness” in Paragraph 1?A.People find it difficult to agree on what happiness is.B.Such books are so popular that they are sold out very soon.C.Happiness is something easy to gain in our daily life.D.Experts find it useless to argue about the value of happiness. 2.When facing setbacks or sad moments, what does the author do?A.He turns to such media as blogs.B.He definitely communicates with partners.C.He adjusts himself and reacts positively.D.He sees himself unlucky and feels depressed. 3.What is the author most likely to agree with?A.Still waters run deep.B.Health is better than wealth.C.Enough is as good as a feast.D.One good turn deserves another. 4.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To introduce a novel experience.B.To advocate a proper life attitude.C.To encourage studies on happiness.D.To persuade us to work endlessly. BWe all know that regular exercise is good for us.In recent years we've been told to aim to walk 10,000 steps a day to remain healthy, although other advice to do three 10minute walks a day is thought to be even more effective. But the latest piece of research might put a spring in your step if you're someone who walks at a fast pace. That's because, according to scientists, the speed at which people walk in their 40s is a sign of how much their brains, as well as their bodies, are ageing. The BBC's Philippa Roxby writes that tests on 1,000 people from New Zealand born in the 1970s found that slower walkers tended to show signs of “accelerated ageing”.Their lungs, teeth and immune systems were in worse shape than those who walked faster. And to add insult to injury, the study found not only did slower walkers' bodies age more quickly, their faces looked older and they had smaller brains.Professor Terrie, lead author of the study, told the BBC: “It found that a slow walk is a problem sign decades before old age.”This might be seen as a wakeup_call for people with a slower pace who might feel it's time to work out and get fitter. But it might be too late; researchers say they were able to predict the walking speed of 45yearolds using the results of intelligence, language and motor skills tests from when they were aged three. They also suggest that even in early life, there are signs showing which people will go on to have a healthier life. So, what's the point of knowing that a slower walking pace might mean a smaller brain? Well, researchers say measuring walking speed at a younger age, and understanding what this might mean, could be a way of testing treatments to slow human ageing. This might help us make lifestyle changes while we're still young and healthy.Any steps we can take to prolong a good mental and physical state is a no brainer! 5.What does the latest research show?A.Walking 10,000 steps a day helps keep fit.B.A slower walker is healthier than a faster walker.C.Slower walkers are easy to have slower brains.D.Ageing signs of slow walkers arise earlier than fast walkers. 6.What do the underlined words “wakeup call” refer to in Paragraph 3?A.Challenge.        B.Potential.C.Reminder.  D.Solution. 7.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.Testing walking speed before old age makes sense.B.It's important to keep fit both physically and mentally.C.Walking pace is connected with health and ageing.D.Walking speed at a young age determines one's longevity. 8.What could be the best title for the text?A.Walking and healthB.Slow walking and ageingC.The way of slowing ageingD.The standard walking pace解析:选B 标题归纳题。 C“You'll be blind by the time you're twentyfive,” a doctor at Children's Hospital predicted.“Your blood sugars are much too high.” It consumed me.No matter where I was or what I was doing, it was overhead like a dark cloud, waiting for just the right opportunity to break open and destroy my world.I liked painting.Losing myself in painting filled me with peace.Painting provided me with the only place where I could escape from those threatening words. When I was twentyone, my right eye went blind.Precisely three months after my twentyfifth birthday, I had a massive haemorrhage (大出血) in my left eye because of an accident. For the next twenty years, vision came and went.I went through many eye operations in an attempt to keep my vision. But after one final operation, I lost the battle and all remaining vision. And I buried all dreams of painting.Desperate,I enrolled in (注册) a sixteenweek program for the blind and visually impaired (损伤的).I learned personal adjustment and the use of a computer with adaptive software.A whole new world opened up to me through this program.“Jaws and WindowEyes are leading software for the blind,” my instructor told me. “You can use the Internet,Email and Microsoft with all its tools and features.” It's amazing!Hope went up for the first time in years. “By learning how to use hot keys to control the mouse, you can use Microsoft Access, Excel and Powerpoint,” my instructor added. For the next several years,I learned that when one door closes, another door opens. There are plenty of choices available for the blind and visually impaired through the gift of technology. Not only do I have a speaking computer, but I have a speaking watch, alarm clock, and calculator. 9.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A.The right opportunity.B.The children's hospital.C.Consuming too much sugar.D.Losing my sight in the future. 10.What happened when the author was 25 years old?A.He gave up painting.B.He went blind completely.C.He injured one of his eyes.D.He picked up a new hobby. 根据第三段中的“Precisely three months after my twentyfifth birthday ...because of an accident.” 11.What brought a turning point to the author?A.A special course.B.A meaningful event.C.An inspiring speech.D.An important interview. 12.What does the author intend to tell us?A.No pains, no gains.B.Every man has his price.C.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.D.Be optimistic in the face of life's difficulties. 例如阅读理解A篇第2题中的题干关键词语为“facing setbacks or sad moments”,根据这些词可定位到第五段“I find contentment in walks and in writing, and in talking with my partner and reminding each other that our life is good, despite temporary setbacks or scary moments.”,每当作者遇到挫折时,他会散步、写作、和伙伴交谈,调节自己,积极面对。
