Discuss the case.
I wuld say, “Yu lk great.” I dn’t have t tell the whle truth if it hurts smene’s feelings, especially my best friend. Besides, she can’t grw her hair back, s what wuld it help anyway? In this case, I am telling a lie t my friend, but I’m well-intended. I dn’t think this kind f lie hurts her.
The ugly truth“Happy birthday, Anne," said my grandma, handing me a brightly wrapped parcel with a big red bw.It was my birthday dinner, a special treat, and the whle family were there-my parents, grandma, grandad, aunt, uncle and nephew."Thanks, Granny!" I said, smiling. I tre the parcel pen. Inside was smething very bright, very pink. I held it up. It was the ugliest dress I hadever seen.
"I hpe yu like it," said Grandma.“Yu lk s pretty in pink. I think this dress is perfect fr yu."Frankly speaking, I was disappinted but I smiled as bradly as I culd.“That's s kind f yu, Granny," I said, trying t sund cnvincing."It's beautiful.Thank yu s much."Grandma smiled back happily at me, with deep wrinkles arund her eyes.Well,I culdn't tell her the truth, culd I?
A white lie that hurt meWhen I gave the dress t Anne fr her birthday, I saw the excitement in her eyes as she tre ff the wrapping paper. She paused briefly when she first saw the dress. Then her beautiful face smiled lvingly at me.She tld me it was a beautiful dress. I knw that the ld and the yung d nt always share the same tastes and I was happy that she liked it. All the hurs f sewing were wrth it when I saw the lk f jy n her face. It was a few days later that I learnt the truth. I was passing Anne's bedrm when I heard her talking n the phne. “My grandma gave me this very pink dress," she said.“I really appreciate it but I dn't think I'll ever be wearing it. I mean, wh wears pink these days?" I std there in awkward silence. Then I walked away, pretending nt t have heard anything.Hwever,I felt cheated and it really depressed me.
1. What was the white lie Anne tld and why did she tell the lie?2. Hw did Grandma find ut the truth and hw did she feel?
Read the passage n Page 8 and answer the fllwing questins.
Anne tld her grandma that she liked the pink dress she had received frm her, but in fact she didn’t. She tld the lie t make her grandma happy. When Grandma was passing Anne’s bedrm a few days later, she heard Anne speaking n the phne that she wuld never wear the pink dress. When Grandma learnt the truth, she pretended nt t have heard anything, but she felt cheated and depressed.
1. What can we learn frm the tw accunts? 2. What is the majr difference between a lie and a white lie?
We need t be careful when we decide t tell such little, “kind-hearted” lies as in Part A. In Anne’s pinin, the little lie she tells Grandma nt nly is harmless but als helps smth an awkward situatin. She thinks it can make Grandma feel gd. But this is nt Grandma’s pinin. When she knws the truth, she feels hurt. A lie is said t prtect neself, while a white lie is said t prtect smene else.
Discuss the fllwing questins.
