Special boxes lie at the bottom of my locked filing cabinet. Deposited there are important letters and cards collected throughout my life, from my grandparents, school friends, parents, wife and son. Since the invention of e-mail though, they've been few and far between.

Tonight is New Year's Eve 2029 and there's a very special box of letters I want to look at. But first there's something I have to do—The Ritual(惯例)

I go to my trusted computer and start. I begin to type: Dear—I leave the name blank for now, anticipating the thrill of typing it in. “I hope you are well and I wonder what your life is like. Are you still planning to move to that villa in Portugal? Did your son marry Fiona? Is your mother still alive? ”Questions surge into my mind.

For the next two hours I sit writing—about what I've been doing for the last year, my failing health, my increasing wealth and my sometime difficult marriage; then about my goals and ambitions. Will he be interested? Do I climb Mt. Kilimanjaro? Do I get that novel published? The one that's been rejected more times than I care to think about.

Finally, it's finished at 1130 pm. I fill in the recipient's name, print my letter, sign and address it and then seal it up with tape. I then delete the document and empty the trash folder—to avoid the possibility of temptation. That completes the ritual!

I walk over to my “special box”. It contains ten long, white, thick envelopes, all with the same handwriting. I place the one I have just written in at the back and take the one out at the front. It's dated 2019, and labelled “to be opened on 31st December, 2029”

The cycle is finally complete! I open it, trembling with anticipation. I begin to read, tearing up a little as I do so. Throughout the last ten long, eventful years, of life, death, joy and heartbreak, it has been waiting patiently in this box for me, though I now have no memory of ever having written it.

1Why does the author receive fewer “important letters” these days  D

AHe has moved from his original address.

BHe is rarely in contact with his friends and family.

CPeople communicate with each other less often than before.

DElectronic communication has largely replaced physical letters.

根据第一段尾句“Since the invention of e-mail thoughthey've been few and far between.”

2Who does the underlined word “he” in paragraph 4 refer to  A

    AThe author himself.

    BThe author's son.

    CThe author's school friend.

    DThe author's book publisher.

根据全文内容尤其是最后一段中的“though I now have no memory of ever having written it”可推知,作者是在给未来的自己写信,该句中的he指作者自己。

3Why does the author delete the completed letter from his computer  B

ASo that no one else will be able to read it.

BSo that he won't read it ahead of schedule.

CBecause he decides at last not to send it.

DBecause he wants to forget what has happened.

4How does the author feel as he is about to open his special letter  C

    ARelieved.   BMoved.

    CExcited.   DAfraid.

根据最后一段第二句“I open ittrembling with anticipation.”

How to Shine at a Job Interview

The smart job seeker needs to get rid of several standard myths about interviewing before starting to look for a job.   1. G

Myth 1: The aim of an interview is to obtain the job offer.

Only half true. The only aim of an interview is to obtain the job you want.   2. E   Unfit job seekers, however, become so used to meeting employers' expectation that they often easily accept jobs that they don't want. So before you work for an employer, be sure you want the job.

Myth 2: Try to control the interview.

Nobody “control” an interview—neither you nor the interviewer—although one or both parties often try. Then it becomes a fake exchange between two human beings; no business deal is likely to be made. Remember, you can't control what employers think of you, just as they can't control what you think of them? So hang loose when interviewing:   3. D

    Myth 3:   4. A

Study the effective conversationalists: They interrupt and were interrupted. An exciting conversation always makes us feel free—free to interrupt, free to disagree, to agree enthusiastically. We feel comfortable with people who allow us to be natural. Employers will either like or dislike you, but at least you will have made an impression. And the way to make an effective impression is to feel free to be yourself, which frees your interviewers to be themselves.

Myth 4Always be well groomed and dress yourself fashionably.

Only half true.   5. B   However, some interviewers might not appreciate the way you “decorate” yourself or, possibly, the positions you are applying for would require more reserved personalities, which, to some interviewers, can be revealed from your appearance. Therefore, the more cautious solution would be to keep to the happy medium—neither appear too “modern” nor too “conservative”

    ANever interrupt the interviewer.

BIt is good to appear clear and neat or well-groomed when you go to an interview.

CThus, the job seeker finds an ideal job.

    DNever dominate the interview.

EThat often means rejecting the job offers you don't want.

FYou are expected to respect each other.

GHere are some untruths and tips to help you do your best at your interview.

选项D(千万不要控制面试。)既是对主题的呼应,又是对“So hang loose when interviewing...” 故选D

从下文,尤其是第一、二句“Study the effective conversationalistsThey interrupt and were interrupted.” 故选A

The construction of pocket or mini parks has given Beijing more greenery as well as a place in   1.which   people can come out for fresh air, socializing and other activities.

In the central commercial and old areas in the capital, where there is a high density(密度)of buildings as well as people, it is an   2.challenging   (challenge) job to create new parks. An advantage of mini parks is that they are “flexible”. They can be in different shapes according to their location(位置)providing   3.various    (variety) services.

These parks contribute to a much   4.better   (good) environment. Mini parks do the work of urban parks for those who live far away from   5.the   latter. People can   6.easily   (easy) walk over to mini parks built on their streets or in their neighborhood, where they can exercise and enjoy the scenery. Also, with the mini parks, people can be more than   7.visitors   (visitor). They can participate in the construction and management. Recently, people in Sanmiao Community in west Beijing, for example, are planning a small garden   8.on   their own. Shortly after the community decided   9.to turn   (turn) an abandoned area into a garden park, they   10.called   (call) a meeting to discuss people's requirements.

on one's own意为独自,为固定搭配。

decide to do sth.
