American researchers say they have invented a methd that culd use salty water n Mars t prduce xygen and fuel, __21__ wuld bth be imprtant elements t supprt future human explratin activities n the Red Planet.
Engineers at Washingtn University in St. Luis, Missuri, develped the new methd. They created a machine called an electrlyzer. It can separate salty water int xygen and hydrgen gases.
The team described the prcess in a study recently published in Prceedings f the Natinal Academy f Sciences (PNAS). Scientists have already cllected slid evidence __22__ the planet likely hlds a large supply tday. But Mars is extremely cld. S, mst f the water __23__ (think) t exist in the frm f ice.
The research team ntes that any water that is nt frzen is almst surely full f salt frm the Martian sil. The usual methds fr breaking water dwn int xygen require the salt __24__ (remve) first. This prcess can be cmplex, cstly and harmful t the envirnment. The new methd they invented can take salty water directly and cnvert it int xygen and hydrgen.
The team carried ut experiments with high levels f magnesium salts, which scientists believe likely __25__ (exist) n Mars. The researchers als carried ut the tests __26__ temperatures similar t the Red Planet's atmsphere.
The U.S. space agency NASA has als experimented with technlgy t prduce xygen n Mars. One device designed t d this will be tested as part f NASA's Perseverance missin. Perseverance is a new explrer vehicle, r rver, that is currently n __27__ way t Mars.
The engineering team said its methd culd even find valuable uses n Earth. "__28__ (demnstrate) these electrlyzers under demanding Martian cnditins, we intend t als use them under __29__ (mild) cnditins n Earth," said Pralay Gayen, wh is a pstdctral researcher at Washingtn University and a lead writer f the study. “__30__ such use culd be in defense industries,” he added, “the methd culd create xygen n demand fr submarines. It may als be able t prvide xygen fr researchers explring new envirnments in the deep sea.”

As they repen after lckdwn, many restaurants are firing up their barbecues. Diners appreciate fd grilled ver glwing charcal embers, but the __31__ residents ften d nt. Pllutin levels near restaurants can be __32__ higher than average, because f emissins frm kitchens. With the increasing ppularity f indr barbecuing, it is a prblem that is set t get wrse.
The researchers tested a cmmercial grill, __33__ with the srt f multistage filtering system used in many ---- thugh by n means all ---- restaurants. Apart frm typical pllutants and particulate matter, they als discvered plycyclic armatic hydrcarbns (多环芳烃). These cancer-causing chemicals are mainly prduced by the incmplete cmbustin (燃烧) f __34__ and il-based sauces. The researchers estimated that if their half-a-square-metre grill was used fr nine hurs a day, it wuld release between 400 and 500 kilgrams f fine and ultrafine particulate matter int the air every year. With many restaurants using 2.5-square-metre grills 16 hurs a day, the level f pllutin frm mst cmmercial __35__ wuld be much higher.
The researchers are investigating which extractin systems best prtect all the peple __36__ such as the restaurant emplyees. Taller chimneys are ne ptin. But Dr Aleysa, an expert in cmbustin technlgy, suspects they wuld just __37__ the pllutin elsewhere. The results f these tests will be published next year.
Meanwhile, Dr Aleysa’s team have cme up with their wn slutin: a new kind f grill, which they reckn can cut pllutants by 90%. Dr Aleysa is reluctant t g int __38__. But the basic idea is that befre being released t the utside, the fumes are sucked back dwn thrugh the embers and int a cmbustin zne, where hydrcarbns and dur cmpunds are fully burnt. That lessens the need fr expensive extractin systems and fiddly filters that must be __39__ cleaned.
An industrial partner is keen t put the grill int prductin. It culd g n sale by the middle f next year. It will cst a bit mre than a standard grill, says Dr Aleysa. But he believes that wuld be ffset by lwer __40__ csts. Better air quality arund restaurants wuld be welcme. But the big test will be whether chefs believe the new grill can prduce that same barbecue flavur.

Feel Like Yu’re Falling Behind Yur Peers?
It’s never pleasant t lag behind thers that we cnsider similar t urselves. The cnventinal wisdm says t "stp cmpeting with thers and nly cmpete with yurself." But that’s easier said than dne. __49__ a persnal strength t regain validatin (认可).
During the perid f insecurity, yu may start t cnsider hw yu can __50__ thers. Duble dwn n yur strengths and express them t the wrld.

    (A)
One is the lneliest number that yu’ll ever d, accrding t the assciatin f schlars knwn as Three Dg Night. But what if there are many numbers even less ppular than ne?
Fr reasns ttally unrelated t classic rck, authr Alex Bells set ut t find the wrld’s favrite numbers. His nline survey swiftly received mre than 30,000 vtes frm numberphiles arund the wrld. Vters gave many reasns fr their favrites, thugh they usually crrespnded t an imprtant date r age r ther psitive assciatin.
Overall, dd numbers utperfrmed evens. And Bells suggests that numbers ending in zer were t rund fr mst tastes. “When we say 100, we dn’t usually mean exactly 100; we mean arund 100,” Bells tld Nautilus magazine. “Why wuld yu have smething as yur favrite that is s vague?”
Numbers that serve a higher purpse did well. Fr instance, 42 ---- the “Answer t the Ultimate Questin f Life, the Universe, and Everything” frm The Hitchhiker’s Guide t the Galaxy ---- landed in 11th place. The lvely, symmetrical (对称的) number eight, which is prnunced “ba-” in Chinese and rhymes with the Chinese character “fa-” signifying prsperity, came in third. Secnd place went t the number three, perhaps fr its many appearances in nature and culture: the number f leaves n a typical clver (三叶草), little pigs pursued by a certain wlf, and wishes ffered by genies.
But the clear winner is the number seven, winning nearly 10 percent f the ttal vte. Shcked? But seven’s triumph als reaffirms a human fascinatin that ges back thusands f years. Bells pints ut that ancient Babylnian tablets were riddled with sevens. There are als seven dwarfs, seven deadly sins, and seven days f the week. We even speak f seventh heaven as the final happiness.
But all f this, Bells suspects, is the effect and nt the cause f ur like fr seven. He assumes that seven is a stne-cld rebel that fllws n rules but its wn.
“Seven is the nly number amng thse we can cunt n ur hands, ne t ten, that cannt be divided r multiplied within the grup,” Bells explains. One, tw, three, fur, and five can each be dubled t reach tw, fur, six, eight, and ten. Nine is divisible by three. Seven, then, is the nly number between tw and ten that is neither a multiple nr a factr f the thers.
56.The mst cmmn reasn fr vters’ decisin is that ________.
A.this number is mre likely t be an dd number
B.this number appears mst frequently in their life
C.this number is usually assciated with lneliness
D.this number relates t smething valuable t them
57.Which f the fllwing statements is Alex Bells mst likely t agree with?
A.100 has lng been favured by many peple because it cnveys a vague meaning.
B.7 is a ppular number because it is cmmn in the cntext f nature and culture.
C.42 is many peple’s favurite number because it is an imprtant number in a nvel.
D.8 has been a lucky number in China because it is symmetrical in shape.
58.What des Alex Bells say abut the number f seven?
A.It is the nly number that is attached t psitive feeling.
B.It stands alne amng the numbers frm ne t ten in a sense.
C.It was cnsidered a unique number by Babylnian peple.
D.It desn’t serve as a factr f any ther number.
59.What is the passage mainly abut?
A.Peple’s favurite numbers.B.Why seven is mst liked by peple.
C.Alex Bells’ bk abut numbers.D.Cultural meaning f numbers.

    (C)
Accrding t a 2018 reprt, peple aged between 16 and 24 make up 15 per cent f the ppulatin but nly 10 per cent f museum-gers. Similarly, peple f clur aged ver 35 g half as much as yu wuld expect frm their ppulatin size.
We have reached the pint f recgnizing a discnnect between art and audiences but haven’t yet determined hw t bridge the gap. Tw answers t tackling this challenge lie in telling a greater diversity f art histries and cmmunicating these stries in mre mdern and accessible ways.
If yu have ever tried t pwer thrugh reading a museums cmplex wall text, yu knw art discussins can be full f special terms. In 2018, I started a pdcast called Art Matters fr the charity Art UK with the aim f discussing art frm a pp-culture angle with tpics that wuld engage yunger and mre diverse audiences. It ffers an accessible pathway t art histry with cnversatins n tpics such as film, psychlgy and even Beyncé, with few special terms. The series has been a useful way f cnnecting art t current events. Art histry is abut strytelling; art cntent shines when there is an effrt t bring audiences alng fr the discussin.
Mre traditinal institutins are paying attentin. This summer, the Getty Museum in Ls Angeles issued a scial-media challenge fr peple t recreate paintings using items they had at hme. Users displayed incredible creativity ---- tilet rlls featured frequently ---- and the museum was flded with submissins. This reactin prves that there is a hidden desire fr audiences t engage with art tpics if the frmat is appealing.
Many peple are intimidated (威胁) by art and feel that there’s a base level f understanding required t jin the cnversatin. The Getty initiative embraced the visuality f art and served as a reminder that there are many pathways t engaging with it.
Anther interesting byprduct f the Getty challenge was the attentin given t a diversity f artwrks. British pera singer Peter Brathwaite, fr example, made scres f stunning recreatins highlighting centuries f black prtraiture, including a cllabratin with Lndn’s Natinal Prtrait Gallery. His effrts cunter the perceptin that there are nt many histrical prtraits f black figures. It is imperative (势在必行的) that we d a better jb f shwcasing the many cmplex and diverse stries that are represented in art. In ding s, we preserve mre histries and welcme wider diversity f peple.
Scial media have ffered a platfrm fr peple wh have nt traditinally had a seat at the table. Anyne can recgnize a gap in the field and address it. Accunts have amassed tens f thusands f fllwers by dedicating their feeds t female artists, artists f f clur and mre. Their fllwings are prf psitive that there is a hunger t hear these art histries, and these themes wrk brilliantly fr museum prgramming.
But there is nly s much that can be dne withut Britain’s museums and galleries changing meaningfully frm within. We need t see a better balance f these stries represented in permanent cllectins. We als need a much wider diversity f peple and interests represented n bards and executive teams.
Ensuring that art ---- and writing and talking abut art ---- resnates thrughut the ppulatin depends n the rising generatin f strytellers, inside institutins and ut, getting the funding and supprt they need t paint a brighter picture fr the sectr.
63.Which f the fllwing is NOT an example f the answers t tackling the challenge?
A.Engaging audiences in discussins in the pdcast Art Matters
B.Hlding pp-culture discussins with the charity Art UK
C.Encuraging peple t recreate paintings with husehld items
D.Prtraying histrical black figures thrugh art recreatins
64.The pdcast Art Matters bears the fllwing features EXCEPT ________.
A.cnnecting art histry t ppular tpics
B.having nly a few special terms
C.being accessible t the pr and needy
    D.engaging mre diverse audiences
65.We can cnclude frm the passage that cmmn audiences ________.
A.lack the ability t understand and talk abut art histry
B.prefer t view artwrks and hear art stries n scial media
C.lng t engage with art tpics and diverse art histry stries
D.hpe mre peple f clur are represented n museum bards
66.Which f the fllwing best serves as the title fr this passage?
    A.Art fr ChangeB.Dn’t Fear Art
    C.Art n Scial MediaD.Art fr All
    Sectin C

We live in a wrld f advertising. Advertising is a pervasive methd f marketing in sciety. Thugh the methds by which marketers advertise have changed ver the decades, the rle and purpse f advertising has shifted very little.
_____67_____. Whether presented in newspapers and magazines r n televisin r the Internet, it serves t prmte a wide range f prducts. What is being presented t the public is usually a prduct r service, such as a car r camera. Yet it may als be an idea, as in "Vte fr Jnes", r an event, as in "Watch the Wrld Series n this channel tmrrw!” Withut advertising, peple wuld have a difficult time knwing where gds culd be bught r even certain gds r services existed.
Advertising began with twn criers in ancient Greece, wh called ut the name f items available in the market. _____68_____ The first printed ads appeared in England in 1480, and newspaper ads began in 1648. _____69_____ Fr example, radi and televisin ads are cstly. But they reach a vast audience. This makes them wrthwhile and cst-effective fr the advertisers. Newspaper ads can feature cupns r infrmatin that can be clipped and saved. Magazines ften appeal directly t special grups, such as sprts fans r teenagers. Other frms f advertising include direct mail, e-mail, billbards.
D business wners themselves think up all thse ads? Fr the mst part, they hire qualified agencies t create their advertising. An advertising agency plans a cmpany’s ads. It als des research. It surveys the market and tests different appraches t determine the mst effective way t sell the greatest amunt f the prduct.
Hw can we be sure that an ad is accurate? Tw gvernment agencies, the Federal Trade Cmmissin and the Fd and Drug Administratin, check ads against false claims. The Pstal Service watches fr fraudulent (欺骗性的) ads sent by mail. State and lcal gvernments als have watchdg agencies. _____70_____

Letters r a diary may cntain valuable infrmatin abut the persn’s friends and activities, thughts and feelings. All f these materials are called primary surces because they cntain firsthand infrmatin ---- infrmatin that des nt depend n the pinins r interpretatins f thers.
A bigrapher als checks secndary surces. The subject’s friends and relatives may be interviewed. If the subject died lng ag, the bigrapher lks fr anything written abut him r her. Secndary surces supply secndhand infrmatin, and s a bigrapher must use them with care. The subject’s friends will want the bigraphy t be favrable, while thers may wish it t be unfavrable. The bigrapher must avid bth extremes. The bigrapher’s jb is nt t make readers like r dislike the subject, but t give as cmplete and truthful a picture f the persn as pssible. This means the bigraphy shuld include bth gd and bad qualities, bth accmplishments and mistakes. James Bswell, the authr f a great bigraphy f his friend Samuel Jhnsn, wrte, “And he will be seen as he really was; fr I prfess t write, nt his panegyric (颂文), which must all praise, but his life, which, great and gd as he was, must nt be suppsed t be entirely perfect.”
Much bigraphical writing falls shrt f Bswell’s standards. Ancient recrds f the deeds f kings and emperrs were written t praise and flatter these rulers. Writers f saints’ (圣人) lives in the Middle Ages were ften mre interested in the mral message than the events f a life. Many 19th-century bigraphers did nt reveal any imprper r embarrassing details f their subjects’ lives. Thugh they may be interesting r inspiring, these wrks fail as bigraphies chiefly because their purpse is t pint up a mral rather than describe an individual.

Her classmate, Angelina Nun, transferred frm a large state cllege, where she struggled with her writing. Detailed suggestins frm her Alvern teachers helped her write clearly. Sn, Nun expects t begin tutring fellw students t help with their writing prblems.

Research subjects wh have lived with limited human cntact since January recently cmpleted an experiment.
The six, fur men and tw wmen, lived near the tp f a vlcan n the Pacific island f Hawaii. They agreed t stay in a small, restricted area as part f a study t learn abut the mental and emtinal effects f a lng term space missin.

Individuals wh are able t deal with lng-term space travel need t have special qualities. They need t be able t deal well with islatin, pressure and danger fr up t three years n a trip that wuld take them far frm Earth.
During the experiment, the subjects wre space suits like thse wrn by astrnauts and traveled in teams whenever leaving their living structure.
The kinds f fds available t the research subjects were limited. They ate mstly freeze-dried r canned fd during the experiment.
All cmmunicatins between the "crew members" and utsiders were given a 20-minute delay, increasing the sense f islatin. Twenty minutes is the time it takes a radi signal t travel frm Mars t Earth.
The crew-members were required t carry ut studies f the rcky surface, make maps and care fr their habitat. The living space had a labratry, cking area and bedrms with little rm fr anything else.
After the experiment was finished, fd was the first thing n the mind f the six astrnauts. They gladly ate a feast f trpical fruit.
14.Why did NASA prvide mney fr the experiment?
15.What special quality are the subjects NOT suppsed t have during the experiment?
16.What are the crew-members required t d during the experiment?

M: ... Or wh’s ging t chse the quiz questin.
W: But we understand each ther. That’s the imprtant thing, isn’t it? D yu knw that yu wave yur arms arund a lt when yu’re arguing?
    M: N I didn’t knw I did that.
    W: That isn’t very British.
M: I knw. Using gestures ---- r mvements yu make with yur hands r yur head t express what yu are thinking r feeling ---- is cmmn in sme cuntries but nt in thers. Then there are sme mvements ---- like shaking yur head ---- which mstly means "n" but in sme cuntries can mean the ppsite.
W: That’s right. There are plenty f gestures yu need t be careful with when yu’re meeting and greeting peple frm a culture that’s different t yur wn ---- t avid ffending peple.
    M: Any example?
W: Fr example, ur everyday use f the thumbs-up signal might ffend peple frm the Middle East. D yu knw in which cuntry shaking yur head means "yes"?
M: N idea ---- I’ll guess Greece. I d knw that in India peple shake their heads t mean lts f different things.
W: That’s the wrng answer, I’m afraid. The right answer is Bulgaria. In sme Sutheastern Eurpean areas such as Bulgaria and suthern Albania, shaking yur head is used t indicate “yes”. In thse regins, ndding in fact means “n” as well.
    M: Is that true?
W: Yes, it is. I hpe yu remember that the next time yu meet smebdy frm Sutheastern Eurpe.

18.Why must we be careful with ur gestures?
