Many years ago, when we were a young couple with two small children, aged 2 and 4, we were practically impecunious. My parents-in-law lived from hand to mouth, so we didn’t expect any help from them. My parents lived a great distance away, and I was too ashamed to let them know about our situation.
My husband was trying to earn a living with an old pickup truck, carrying groceries for local shopkeepers, but it was constantly breaking down. It took almost all the money we had to have it fixed. The truck was also the only means of transportation for us.
We lived in the countryside, and we always used the back door because the driveway led to it. One winter evening, I stepped outside to take a bag of trash to the barrel and almost tripped over something. It was nearly dark, and I had to bend down to see what it was. I could hardly believe my eyes. There sat a large basket loaded with food.
It was heavy, so I called my husband to carry it into the house. Once inside, we discovered two loaves of bread, some butter, several cans of vegetables, a can of orange sauce, and a large turkey. There was so much that I couldn’t remember it all, but it was everything we needed to fix a wonderful dinner—everything except potatoes.
A little while later I remembered that I hadn’t taken the trash to the barrel. By now it was dark, so I had to turn on the yard light—and that’s when I spotted a small bag of potatoes sitting on the porch.
That dinner was the best I could remember.
We weren’t able to thank our donators, though, because we never found out who had been so generous in helping a struggling young family. Whoever it was,we are forever grateful.

It’s the universal cry of parents.“Get a job!” Soliman’s mother told Soliman on the second day of his college breaks.
After years of delivering furniture for his mother’s store, he knew many people had things they wanted to get rid of. If he borrowed his mum’s truck, he could make a little money by carrying away their garbage.
One night, Soliman came up with a name for his new business—College Hunks Hauling Junk. He advertised the next day, and within hours, his phone rang. He asked his friend Nick Friedman to help. They made $220 in three hours by cleaning out a woman’s garage. Soliman and Friedman earned $10,000 that summer. But the two weren’t ready to become full-time garbage men after graduation.“We were trained to finish college and get a good job,” says Soliman, who first worked at a research firm. Friedman became an economic analyst.
After working for the firm and the company for a while, both of them changed their minds. They quit their jobs and restarted their business, but had trouble finding a bank willing to lend them money.“Within months,” says Friedman,“we were pretty upset.” At last, one bank risked lending them $50,000. At first, they lost money. One customer asked them to deal with a dozen garbage cans filled with construction garbage. They measured the job by volume instead of by weight and charged just $130.“The cans were so heavy that it took us two and a half hours,” says Soliman,“and it cost us more than $250 to carry the load.”
However, the tough experience taught them a lesson. They reduced the cost of unloading by recycling metals and electronics. Just four years later, they ran a nationwide company that earned $3 million in 2014.“I figured if Nick and I failed, we’d learn more from failing than from not trying at all,” says Soliman.
28.What does Soliman find when helping to deliver furniture?
A.Some parents want their kids to work at college breaks.
B.Many families have things they don’t want to keep.
C.His mum’s truck works well in carrying heavy furniture.
D.It’s hard to make money by carrying away the garbage.

B.His strong desire to make use of the garbage.
C.His hatred for people’s throwing away things.
D.His much available time at college breaks.
30.How did Soliman and Friedman cut the cost of the company?
A.By filling the cans with more garbage.
B.By measuring the job by volume.
    C.By reducing the working hours.
    D.By recycling something useful.
31.Which of the following can be learned from the passage?
    A.Easier said than done.
    B.Nothing succeeds like success.
C.Two heads are better than one.

Our brain is a wonderful and complicated organ. 36
In recent years, scientists have discovered new ways to study the brain. They can now watch the activities of different parts of our brain while it is at work. We can think of these techniques as new windows on our minds.
37 It can take pictures of your brain in much the same way as an X-ray machine can take pictures of your bones. This method makes use of the fact that whenever a part of your brain becomes more active, it uses more oxygen.
If someone were to use this technique to study your brain, your head would be surrounded by a machine that includes a big magnet. 38 With the help of a computer, it turns these signals into pictures. By taking pictures every few seconds, scientists can tell which parts of your brain become active when you think of something, such as multiplying ten three times.
39 Without stored memories, we would not be able to remember words we have learned or find our way home.
Everything we learn must be stored as memories in our brain. 40 Once a change is made, it must remain, even after the effort to learn has stopped.
A.One new research method is called FMRI.
B.This device can discover tiny signals coming from oxygen.
C.Most of our memories are stored away out of our awareness.
D.Storing memories is one of the most important jobs our brain does.
E.Keeping that information in our brain means our brain changes.
F.When we need them, they can be “copied” and placed for immediate use.
G.Scientists have been working for centuries to understand how it works.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为150左右。
When I was 9 years old, I used to cut grass for Mrs Long. The elderly lady paid me very little, for she didn’t have much money. But she did promise me,“When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you.” I spent much time wondering what it would be. The boys I played with had baseball gloves, bicycles and ice skates, and I was so eager to acquire any one of these that I convinced myself that Mrs Long intended to choose from them.
“It would hardly be baseball gloves,” I reasoned with myself.“A woman like Mrs Long wouldn’t know much about baseball.” Since she was old and weak, I also ruled out the bicycle. How could she handle such a large item?
On my last Saturday at work, Mrs Long said,“At Christmas you come to the door and collect the present.” These words clinched(确定) my guess. Since she was going to have the present in her house and handle it herself, unquestionably she was giving me a pair of ice skates.
I became so convinced of this that I could imagine myself upon the skates and the excitement they brought me. As the cold days of November arrived and ice began to form on the ponds, I began to try my luck on the ice.“Get away from that ice!” a man shouted.“It’s not strong enough yet.”
As Christmas approached it was with difficulty that I restrained(抑制) myself from reporting to Mrs Long and demanding my present. On the 21st day of December, icy weather froze all the ponds so that boys who already had ice skates were able to use them. My longing to possess mine became overpowering.
So the next day I could control myself no longer and presented myself at Mrs Long’s door.“I’ve been waiting for you,” she said with a smile.
She set me in a chair and handed a package to me.

On Christmas morning, I could not wait to open the package.

    答案:
    附:听力原文
    (Text 1)
W: When will you go back to Beijing with your mother?
M: Our plane will take off at 9 a.m. and arrive at 11 a.m. My father and my sister will go to the airport to pick us up.
    (Text 2)
W: Excuse me. Could you tell me where the doctor’s office is?
M: Yes, it’s on the second floor, beside the lift. If you still can’t find it, you can ask a nurse to take you there.
    (Text 3)
M: Hi, Cindy. Have you seen the interesting film? It’s really good.
W: I didn’t get a ticket. But you were very lucky.
    (Text 4)
M: Wouldn’t it be great if we could go skating together today?
W: I’m sorry, but I have to help my mother do some washing after finishing my homework in the morning. Can we make it this afternoon?
    (Text 5)
W: Why did you arrive at our company so late yesterday? The boss was angry.
M: My car broke down halfway. It took me 30 minutes to get it repaired.
    (Text 6)
W: Jack, can I borrow your digital camera?
M: Is this for your school trip or a friend’s party?
W: It’s for our school magazine. The first issue was published last Monday, and the second one was last Friday. But it’s going to be an online magazine this Friday.
M: What’s wrong with the paper magazine?
W: On the one hand, using paper is too expensive. On the other hand, an online magazine is more convenient.
M: Well, I would rather listen to the news on the radio than skim it on the Internet or in newspapers.
    (Text 7)
M: How do you like your new job, Wendy?
    W: It’s OK, I guess... Actually, it’s a little frustrating.
M: Oh, that’s too bad. Why?
W: Well, I don’t know how to use the computer system. It’s very confusing.
M: Why don’t you ask for some more training?
W: Yeah. I guess I could do that, but that’s not the only thing I don’t like. I also have to give factory tours. That’s really difficult! I can’t stand speaking in front of a group of people.
M: Hmm. I have never had such a problem. But I think you should let your boss know that.
    W: You’re right. I will.
    (Text 8)
M: I really enjoyed the art lesson yesterday.
W: Me too, David. I liked going into the city to draw different places. Is this your picture of the museum?
M: Yes. What did you draw?
W: I couldn’t decide between the castle and the market. In the end, I did a drawing of people buying vegetables in the market. Did you see what Luke drew?
M: Yes. His picture was of some people in the park having a picnic.
W: Well, I know that Mary loves drawing water. Did she go to the river?
M: No. She went to the sports centre and drew some children having a swimming lesson. What about Patrick?
W: We were walking to the market together but then he saw someone cleaning windows at the bank and stopped to draw that.
M: Christina is the best artist. I saw her on Bridge Street sitting at a table having a drink. She was drawing a waiter talking to a customer. The picture looked really good.
    (Text 9)
M: You look tired again, Samantha.
W: I’ve had such a busy week, and this morning was just... uh, ... I woke up really early, at 5:00 a.m., and then I couldn’t get back to sleep, so I got up.
    M: What? 5:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning?
W: Yeah. I took a shower and went out to catch a bus into town. But instead of the usual 8:00 a.m., it didn’t come until 8:15 a.m. And it was raining hard.
    M: Oh dear!
W: When I got to town, it was 9:15 a.m. First, I went to the library. But I waited until 10:00 a.m. for it to open.
M: What did you do in the library?
W: I spent two hours looking for something about the kings and queens of England for my school project, but all the books I needed were checked out.
M: Why didn’t you go to a bookstore?
W: I didn’t have enough money, so I caught the bus home.
M: What time did you get home?
W: Not until 2:00 p.m. The bus broke down and I had to walk the rest of the way home.
    M: Oh no!
    (Text 10)
M: Peter was walking back home from school, thinking about the class today. It was about giving first aid. Suddenly he saw a young girl lying on the ground. She seemed to be asleep, but Peter saw that her face was very pale. He walked up to the girl and called softly,“Miss? Miss?” She moved slightly, but gave no clear response. He put his hand under her nose. Yes, she was still breathing. Then he suddenly saw that there was a wound on her left leg, and blood was flowing out. She might have been hit by a car or a motorcycle. He knew what he should do next. He dialed “120” and called an ambulance. While waiting for it, he took out his handkerchief and tired to stop the bleeding. Then he put the girl in a safe position by rolling her onto one side and placing her left upper arm under her chin.“She’ll be all right,” he thought when the ambulance arrived five minutes later.

    写作
    第一节
    Dear Tom,
How are you going? I miss you very much. I feel very depressed now because there is an annoying thing that discourages me.
There is a new classmate who is very fat coming to my class. Many classmates laugh at him just because of his weight, which makes me angry. In my opinion, looking down on the newcomer is a foolish behaviour, and it makes themselves look like a fool. As a result, the relationship between classmates must be broken.
Unluckily, I don’t know how to solve the problem. So I hope you can give me some suggestions. I will appreciate it if you can help me get out of trouble.
    Best wishes!
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    第二节
She set me in a chair and handed a package to me. She said to me,“Thanks for cutting grass for me. Because I didn’t have much money, I didn’t pay you money. I have promised to give you a present, so it is time for you to get your present.” I was so excited that I wanted to open it right now, but Mrs Long stopped me and said,“You can’t open it until Christmas morning. Can you make it?” “Of course, Mrs Long,” I replied.
On Christmas morning, I could not wait to open the package. To my excitement, it was a brand new pair of ice skates which I was eager for. I couldn’t control myself and went to the frozen pond. I skated on the ice with the other people. As I skated on the ice, I thought of Mrs Long. How kind she was to send me such a present! She must have observed me for a long time and knew what I wanted so much. It was a better present than much money.
