In the mid-1990s, Tom Bissell taught English as a volunteer in Uzbekistan. He left after seven months, physically broken and having lost his mind. A few years later, still attracted to the country, he returned to Uzbekistan to write an article about the disappearance of the Aral Sea.
His visit, however, ended up involving a lot more than that. Hence this book, Chasing the Sea: Lost Among the Ghosts of Empire in Central Asia, which talks about a road trip from Tashkent to Karakalpakstan, where millions of lives have been destroyed by the slow drying up of the sea. It is the story of an American travelling to a strange land, and of the people he meets on his way: Rustam, his translator, a lovely 24-year-old who picked up his colorful English in California, Oleg and Natasha, his hosts in Tashkent, and a string of foreign aid workers.
This is a quick look at life in Uzbekistan, made of friendliness and warmth, but also its darker side of society. In Samarkand, Mr Bissell admires the architectural wonders, while on his way to Bukhara he gets a taste of police methods when suspected of drug dealing. In Ferghana, he attends a mountain funeral(葬礼) followed by a strange drinking party. And in Karakalpakstan, he is saddened by the dust storms, diseases and fishing boats stuck miles from the sea.
Mr Bissell skillfully organizes historical insights and cultural references, making his tale a well-rounded picture of Uzbekistan, seen from Western eyes. His judgment and references are decidedly American, as well as his delicate stomach. As the author explains, this is neither a travel nor a history book, or even a piece of reportage. Whatever it is, the result is a fine and vivid description of the purest of Central Asian traditions.
21.What made Mr Bissell return to Uzbekistan?
A.His friends’ invitation.
B.His interest in the country.
C.His love for teaching.
D.His desire to regain health.
22.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Developing a serious mental disease.
B.Taking a guided tour in Central Asia.
C.Working as a volunteer in Uzbekistan.
D.Writing an article about the Aral Sea.
23.What is the purpose of this text?
A.To introduce a book.
B.To explain a cultural phenomenon.
C.To remember a writer.
D.To recommend a travel destination.

Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents’ income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转) and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.
24.In which aspect do children benefit from puzzle play?
A.Building confidence.
B.Developing spatial skills.
C.Learning self-control.
D.Gaining high-tech knowledge.
25.What did Levine take into consideration when designing her experiment?
A.Parents’ age.
B.Children’s imagination.
C.Parents’ education.
D.Child-parent relationship.
26.How do boys differ from girls in puzzle play?
A.They play with puzzles more often.
B.They tend to talk less during the game.
C.They prefer to use more spatial language.
D.They are likely to play with tougher puzzles.
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.A mathematical method.
B.A scientific study.
C.A woman psychologist.
D.A teaching programme.

Contrary to advertisements seen on television, read in magazines, or heard on the radio, spending a lot of money on a gift for a friend or loved one is totally unnecessary. Many people collect photos or mementos(纪念品) from special events, trips, or celebrations throughout their lives, throwing them in a drawer or cardboard box somewhere, intending to sort them out later. It seems, though, that “later” never comes. So, the next time you’re ready to buy a silk scarf or a pair of leather gloves for that special someone, consider sorting through that junk drawer filled with mementos and special photos.
For example, you can decorate an inexpensive picture frame with colourful buttons for your mother who is interested in sewing, or use tiny machine parts for your workshop-crazed brother. Inserting a special photo of you and that certain someone will create a gift that will be treasured forever. Shadow boxes are a wonderful way to display several objects from a single special event, such as a wedding. Take the original wedding invitation, a dried flower from the table centrepiece, or anything else that you can gather from the wedding, and display them in the box.
When you have many photos and mementos, make a photo album or scrapbook(剪贴簿)for a friend or family member. Today, the options for decorating your book are nearly endless. Entering a scrapbooking store can make your head spin. If this happens to you on your first scrapbooking visit, consider taking an introductory class, which many stores offer. Of course, you will have a much better idea of which scrapbook supplies to buy when the class ends.
Pictures or books that can be enjoyed over and over again are one-of-a-kind, original gifts. There is nothing like receiving a gift that comes straight from the heart. Such gifts help people recall happy times and strengthen the bond between the giver and the receiver.
28.What is the author’s attitude to gift advertisements?
A.Tolerant. B.Doubtful.
C.Uncaring. D.Disapproving.
29.According to paragraph 2, shadow boxes .
A.are more expensive than picture frames
B.are usually made of cheap materials
C.can be used to show mementos
D.can be a precious wedding gift
30.The introductory class mentioned in paragraph 3 will help you learn how to .
A.take beautiful pictures
B.decorate your scrapbook
C.start a scrapbooking store
D.write a book on scrapbooking
31.Which would be the best title for the text?
A.A Gift from the Heart
B.A Special Photo Album
C.The First Scrapbooking Visit
D.The Treasured Shadow Boxes

We live in a world where the great majority of our attention is focused on what we can see. Whether we’re watching TV or working on a computer, sight has become the leading sense in modern life. But have we lost touch with our other senses?
Dr Charles Spence of Oxford University thinks so. In his latest report, he argues that the use of all senses is central to health. However, sensory deprivation is common in modern life, and it is harmful to our health.
Indeed, we take it for granted that most information we use to understand our world comes through our eyes. But our other senses may be suffering. Consider the sense of touch. According to Dr Spence, children may grow up “touch-hungry” because they are not getting enough tactile(触觉的) sensations. He suggests that we put more tactile objects into our schools to help develop this sense.
Dr Spence may be exploring something deeper than our five senses. Life in the industrialised world is often far removed from nature, and it is no accident. For example, whether it is day or night no longer matters as much. Video arcades(电子游乐场) are open around the clock. In some places of entertainment, there are no clocks, no windows, just the ringing of slot machines and cold hard coins. The owners there want you to lose track of time, and to be cut off from reality.
Ironically, most popular video games are those modelled on real-life experiences. You can surf, snowboard or even fish! But again, you don’t feel the rise of the waves, the softness of snow, or the slipperiness of a freshly caught fish.
It is upsetting that on weekends we rush to crowded video arcades for unreal experiences. There’s nothing wrong with a little stimulation, but there’s more to life. We mustn’t forget to feed our other senses. Right now, they’re starving, and that may not be good for our health.
32.What does the underlined phrase “sensory deprivation” probably refer to?
A.The inadequate use of a sense.
B.The excessive dependence on one sense.
C.The loss of a sense related to poor health.
D.The failure for a sense to function properly.
33.In addition to the senses, what else is Dr Spence probably exploring?
A.The development of industrialisation.
B.The availability of various means of entertainment.
C.The disconnection between modern life and nature.
D.The comfort and ease of life brought by businesses.
34.What is ironical about video games?
A.People could be crazy about them.
B.They stop us from contacting the real world.
C.They enable people to do things they can’t do in reality.
D.People turn to the unreal world for the enjoyment of the real one.
35.What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To call for a return to the full use of all senses.
B.To warn of the danger of modern entertainment.
C.To show the consequences of losing other senses.
D.To criticise the hunger for profits in the industrialised world.

A housewarming party is a special party to be held when someone buys or moves into a new apartment or house. The person who bought the house or moved is the one who throws the party. The party is a chance for friends and family to congratulate the person on the new home. 36 And it is a good time to fill the new space with love and hopefully presents.
37 Some people register a list of things they want or need for their new home at a local store or stores. Some common things people will put on a gift registry include kitchen tools like knives and things like curtains. Even if there isn’t a registry, a good housewarming gift is something to decorate the new house with, like a piece of art or a plant.
38 This is often appreciated since at a housewarming there isn’t a lot of food served. There are usually no planned activities like games at a housewarming party. The host or hostess of the party will, however, probably give all the guests a tour of their new home. Sometimes, because a housewarming party happens shortly after a person moves into their new home, people may be asked to help unpack boxes. 39
Housewarming parties get their name from the fact that a long time ago people would actually bring firewood to a new home as a gift. 40 Now most homes have central heating and don’t use fires to keep warm.
A.This isn’t usual though.
B.It is traditional to bring a gift to a housewarming party.
C.You can also bring food or drinks to share with the other guests.
D.If you’re lucky enough to receive gifts, keep them in a safe place.
E.It also gives people a chance to see what the new home looks like.
F.The best housewarming parties encourage old friends to get together.
G.This was so that the person could keep their home warm for the winter.

A woman who had a stroke(中风) while on a video call with her sister said the technology saved her life. Esmee Russell, head of the Stroke Association, said, “A stroke can happen to anyone, at any age, and at any time. That’s why it’s so important that people know how to act fast: it could save a life.” Strokes happen when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off by a clot(凝块), or damaged by bleeding that causes brain cells in the affected area to die.
Opokua Kwapong, who lives alone in New York, was on a call with her sister, Adumea Sapong, in Manchester, when Mrs Sapong noticed that her elder sister “didn’t look right”. And she also noticed her sister’s voice was indistinct(不清楚的). Ms Kwapong said she had not realised how serious the situation was.
58-year-old Kwapong had just woken from an afternoon sleep when Mrs Sapong called her on the Internet. Ms Kwapong said,“My sister looked at me and said she could see that my face didn’t look right. She also said that I was slurring my words, but I thought she was making a fuss(大惊小怪) and I didn’t believe her.”
Mrs Sapong said,“When I called Kwapong, she said that she’d not been feeling well but she had been feeling tired and had been also having some difficulty walking. I said, ‘Perhaps you need to take some medicine.’ She tried to pick up a glass of water but wasn’t able to. Then
I noticed on the video call that her face was drooping(垂下). I told her she needed to hang up and immediately see a doctor. She thought I was making a fuss so I then called one of my other sisters, who is a doctor, and she could hear her speaking and could also tell that her speech was indistinct. We both told her to call for help at once.”
Ms Kwapong hung up and then dialed the number of the emergency services.
Ms Kwapong said,“There is no doubt that the Internet and technology saved my life.”

M: Have you decided what to buy for Jane’s birthday?
W: Well, I want to get her a special gift, maybe a purse. How about you?
M: Oh, I haven’t made up my mind yet. Maybe a popular book, or a dictionary.
(Text 3)
M: Where do you live, Carol?
W: I have a flat on the north side of town. It’s a really tall, modern building. It has over twenty floors. I live on the thirteenth floor. Our colleague Jane lives five floors under mine.

(Text 4)

M: I’d like a tea with milk and some noodles, please.
W: I don’t sell those here.
M: OK. How about a Coke and a hot dog?
W: No, no! You can’t buy those in my shop!
M: What can I get to eat, then? I’ve been waiting in this line for forty minutes and I’m hungry!
W: I only make egg cakes. My egg cakes are world-famous.

(Text 10)
M: Hello, my friends! How much do you know about the life in American colleges? Here in the US, college life can be as interesting as you can imagine. It is a time to experience new things and studies alone do not satisfy the students. This is where out-of-class activities come in. These activities range from clubs, organisations and groups to sports. They are all directed by students themselves. Each organisation has an advisor, but student members plan all activities and events. In a university, there are as many as hundreds of student organisations for students to choose from. Each student is sure to have a club or group that fits his needs or interests. The clubs range from hobbies to community service, and sports. For example, there are ski clubs, yoga clubs, dance clubs, etc. If you cannot find a club that you are interested in, you can have an idea for a new club, and form one yourself. All you have to do is to pass the idea through the school and find an advisor and if the school agrees, you’ll have a new student organisation!

写作
第一节
Dear Oliver,
Knowing that you are returning to your homeland, I am really unwilling to say goodbye to you.
As for the gift, after careful consideration, I recommend you the Chinese knot. Made of red threads, it always represents happiness, luck and unity, though in different shapes. It is a tradition for Chinese to hang it in houses as a decoration. It is usually given as a precious gift to close friends. I think it can convey your best wishes to your friend.
Hope my advice can be of some help.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Ms Kwapong hung up and then dialed the number of the emergency services. The ambulance rushed to her house and nurses sent her to hospital. In hospital, Ms Kwapong was diagnosed with stroke and should stay in hospital for at least one week. Her sister Adumea Sapong looked after her. Her doctor said she was lucky to receive treatment quickly or she could have had much trouble.
Ms Kwapong said,“There is no doubt that the Internet and technology saved my life. If my sister had not noticed that something was wrong, things could have been so different. Not only did technology save my life, but it now also allows me to live my life. I rely a lot on the Internet as I’m not able to travel as much as I did previously. We heard a lot of negative stories about the Internet and technology, but I think this is an example of how technology can help us in daily life.”
