Frm eating turkey (火鸡) t spending time with family t watching ftball, Thanksgiving is filled with traditins. But ne f the mst ppular — pulling the wishbne (如愿骨) — dates back centuries.
The upside-dwn V-shaped bne is in fact called the furcula. It is an elastic (有弹性的) bne lcated between a turkey’s neck and its breast. All birds have a wishbne. It helps supprt a bird as it flies. At Thanksgiving, the traditin is fr tw peple t hld ne end f the wishbne, make a wish, and then tug (拉). The winner is the persn wh ends up with the bigger piece and can make a wish.
Hw did this traditin get started? The practice f making a wish n a bird’s furcula dates back t the ancient Etruscans. After killing a chicken, an Etruscan wuld leave the wishbne in the sun t dry.
