A 篇Fading beauty
She is widely seen as prf that gd lks can last fr ever. But, at nearly 500 years f age, time is catching up with the Mna Lisa.
The health f the famus picture, painted by Lenard Da Vinci in 1505, is getting wrse by the year, accrding t the Luvre Museum(卢浮宫博物馆) where it is hused.
“The thin, wden panel n which the Mna Lisa is painted in il has changed shape since experts checked it tw years ag,” the museum said. Visitrs have nticed changes but repairing the wrld’s mst famus painting is nt easy. Experts are nt sure abut the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state(化学状态).
Nearly 6 millin peple g t see the Mna Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery f her smile. “It is very interesting that when yu’re nt lking at her, she seems t be smiling, and then yu lk at her and she stps,” said Prfessr Margaret Livingstne f Harvard University. “It’s because direct visin (视觉) is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited t lking at shadws. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadws.”
Hwever, the actual histry f the Mna Lisa is just as mysterius as the smile. Da Vinci himself lved it s much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sld t France’s King Francis I in 1519.
In 1911, the painting was stlen frm the Luvre by a frmer emplyee, wh tk it ut f the museum hidden under his cat. He said he panned t return it t Italy. The painting was sent back t France tw years later.
