During a decline in turism, ne natinal park in Thailand has seen a dramatic rise in “visitrs” recently. S many are the hermit crabs (寄居蟹) flding int the therwise empty beaches f Kh Lanta that shells (贝壳) fr them t live in have becme in shrt supply.
The Thai gvernment mved quickly t ease the husing shrtage, launching a public appeal fr empty shells that netted ver 200 kg. On December 5 these were distributed arund the park in a ceremny.
Hermit crabs rely n shells t prtect their sft bdies, mving t larger shells as they grw. On Kh Lanta and the surrunding smaller islands, their rapid increase seems t be a natural phenmenn, rather than directly related t the absence f turists. But the shrtage f shells may be man-made: pretty nes have lng been gathered t be sld as gds. Crabs had begun t make d with ptential death-traps such as plastic caps and bttles.
The shell drive was part f a gvernment initiative t “regain the balance f nature”. “I have instructed all natinal parks t d whatever it takes,” says Varawut Silpa-archa, the minister fr natural resurces. His inspiratin cmes frm the pause in turism brught n by COVID-19. A ban n internatinal visitrs and the clsure f natinal parks have helped nature recver, bringing endangered leatherback turtles back nt Thai beaches. In the castal prvinces f Phang Nga and Phuket, turtles have laid the largest number f eggs fr 20 years.
The gvernment has decided t try t cpy the shrt break frced n it by COVID-19 in future. Frm nw n, all natinal parks will be required t clse fr a shrt perid during the ff-seasn and t limit the number f turists thrugh a reservatin system when they are pen. Althugh such restrictins mean reduced earnings frm turism in the shrt term, in the lnger run mre parks may help t keep the turists cming.

Artificial intelligence (AI) still can’t see the future, but a new algrithm (算法) may cme clse: using nthing but written mvie summaries, the AI can cnsistently tell which films will play well-r awfully-t critics and audiences. If the mdel can be further imprved, it culd ne day help prducers predict whether a mvie will be a failure at the bx ffice, befre it’s even made.
T test several mdels, researchers used plt summaries f 42,306 mvies frm all ver the wrld, many cllected frm Wikipedia. The mdels brke the summaries by sentence and used smething called sentiment (情感) analysis t analyze each ne. Sentences cnsidered “psitive”, such as “Thr lves his hammer”, wuld receive a rating clser t psitive ne. And sentences that were cnsidered “negative”, like “Thr gets in a fight” wuld be rated clser t negative ne.
Generally, successful mvies such as 1951’s Alice in Wnderland-which scred 80% n the mvie-rating website Rtten Tmates-have frequent waves in sentiment; unsuccessful nes, such as 2009’s The Limits f Cntrl, vary less. It’s nt imprtant whether the films begin r end happily, the researchers say. What’s imprtant is that the sentiments change frequently.
The sentiment ratings in each summary were then simplified int a single scre t reflect hw ften the sentiment changed. The researchers tested three different methds f arriving at a final scre. All three culd predict fairly accurately whether a mvie wuld be unppular, and ne methd wrked especially well fr guessing which thrillers and cmedies reviewers wuld hate.
The methds were nt as efficient at guessing which mvies wuld succeed, but they still predicted the results mre accurately than randm chance. In the future, the researchers say their methds culd be bettered t predict the amunt a mvie culd earn at the bx ffice and help prducers decide which mvies t invest in. The system’s fair judgment might give an advantage t less well-knwn writers, the researchers add. It culd als ptentially save the public frm having t sit thrugh films like Jaws: The Revenge, which nline critics and audience alike rate as terrible.
    22. Hw can AI help fresee the future f mvies?
    A. By testing plt mdels.B. By using sentiment analysis.
    C. By writing summaries.D. By cnsulting critics and audiences.
    23. What is the key factr fr a successful mvie accrding t the researchers?
    A. A happy ending. B. Famus mvie stars.
    C. A well-knwn prducer.D. Frequent sentiment changes.
    24. What benefit will the methds pssibly bring?
    A. Helping prducers invest wisely.B. Assessing a mvie's quality accurately.
    C. Increasing bx ffice earnings.D. Prviding written summaries fr critics.
    25. What’s the researchers’ attitude t the mdel?
    A. Dubtful.B. Cautius. C. Optimistic. D. Ambiguus.
