Many workers have had no choice but to adapt to working from home in recent months since offices shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic (新冠疫情). And the noisy situation and endless housework may result in a terrible emotion. A new option is waiting for you. That is WFH: work from a hotel.

    Hotel Figuero

A special program titled Work Perks aims to reposition some of 94-year-old Hotel Figuero’s 268 rooms as day-use offices.

According to Managing Director Connie Wang, the set-up launched in June and is a great opportunity to get out of their houses with high-speed Wi-Fi, unlimited printing privileges and free parking. The 350-square-foot rooms sell for $ 139 per day, with an option to extend to an overnight stay for an additional $ 30.

    The Wythe

A boutique hotel in Brooklyn. The hotel recently announced a partnership with co-working office space company Industrious through which it is recycling 13 second-story guest rooms to serve as offices for up to four people.

    The Sawyer

The Sawyer, in Sacramento, California, is offering pool cabanas (更衣室) for use as outdoor offices, complete with fast Wi-Fi, free parking and catered lunch for $ 150 per day.

Each of the rooms has a small outdoor platform, and dogs are welcome. Pricing starts at $ 200 and goes up to $ 275, depending on how many people use the space.

    Hotels By Day

Yannis Moati founded Hotels By Day back in 2015. That company has grown to include more than 1,500 hotels, and has seen a significant increase in the number of inquiries for day-use bookings lately.

Moati said the current situation will force hotels to upgrade themselves to stay alive, and he predicted that offering rooms for day-use only is one of the directions they will go.

    21. How much should one pay for a 24-hour stay in Hotel Figuero?

    A. $ 129.     B. $ 150.      C. $ 169.     D. $ 200.

    C. He usually predicts everything correctly.     D. He is optimistic about the WFH trend.

Wayne Winters began walking along the streets near his home in Farr West, Utah early this month with a sandwich board containing an unusual request. "Need Kidney for Wife," the sign reads. Winters’ phone number and his wife Deanne’s blood type are also included.

Deanne has severe kidney failure and is in need of a transplant. Desperate to do something to help his sick wife, Winters walks along the streets armed with a new suit, and his sign with a plea(恳请)for a kidney. Though he doesnt walk fast, Winters unusual method of tracking down a kidney for Deanne has attracted plenty of attention. In addition to the motorists and passers-by who have seen Winters out walking miles a day, his request for a kidney has now hit the Internet and attracted the attention of millions more people.

Winters said he was inspired to pound the pavement on behalf of his wife after seeing a story online about another man who did the same thing and got national attention. Rush hour is his favorite time to walk up and down the streets because drivers are slowed down.

Though he hasn’t had any success yet, Winters remains confident he will find a kidney for Deanne, and says he won’t rest until he makes it. Winters has stated even after a match for Deanne is found, he will continue to raise awareness about kidney donation because it is now his life mission. In fact, the back of his current sign includes a message aimed at helping others in need. It read, "1,000 kidneys are needed in Utah and Idaho."

The National Kidney Foundation reports the average wait for an individual’s first kidney transplant is over three and a half years, and can vary depending on health, compatibility(兼容性)and availability of organs. The organization also notes over 3,000 new patients are added to the kidney waiting list each month, and 13 people die each day while waiting for a life-saving kidney transplant.

Each country has its own secret to happiness, If "pyt", which closely means "don’t worry about it and stuff happens", explains a relaxed attitude of Danish people, "niksen" will reveal how Dutch people combat stress and burnout in a fast-paced lifestyle.

The term "niksen" origins from the Dutch word "niks", which refers to "nothing", Mindfulness, another welcome subject to help people have a peaceful mind. But unlike mindfulness, niksen is not about concentrating on the present moment. It’s about letting yourself do nothing, and allowing your mind to run free without expectation.

In practice, this means “hanging around, looking at your surroundings, or listening to music as long as it's without purpose” according to Time Magazine.

Niksen sounds contrary to the advice we were all given as kids. Nowadays, we’re constantly told to stay busy and work harder than everyone else. But niksen opposes that mentality. It offers the chance to "deliciously do nothing", as Carolien Hamming, a coach at CSR Centrum, an organization devoted to fighting stress and burnout in the Netherlands, told Time.

She thinks that niksen is essential to staying healthy, since it’s a form of mental relaxation and healing. Just as a wild animal lies in wait for their prey, niksen seems to be a natural state of being.

For some people, niksen can mean more than just stress reduction. It’s also a means to imagine new ideas or plans. As an early adopter(尝试者) of niksen, Jenny Holden, a communications expert in the UK, adds it to her daily lunch breaks. "Within 10 minutes of doing nothing - just staring and listening to myself - my head began to clear and sort out my work and home to-do lists," she told the MetroUK.

Above all, niksen is a suggestion for balancing work and rest. As Dutch-bom writer Ogla Mecking wrote in US-based Whoolly Magazine, niksen is the "sheer enjoyment of life’s pauses".

Everyone is encouraged to embrace your niksen moments. They revitalize (使恢复元气) you and give you the strength needed to face everyday challenges.

    28. What does niksen means?

    A. Living in the moment.           B. Leading a healthy lifestyle.

    C. Being free and doing nothing.     D. Using your wildest imagination.

    29. Holden’s example is to show         .

    C. niksen can shorten the distance between people

    D. niksen helps people come up with new thoughts

    30. The underlined word “sheer” is closest in meaning to "          ".

    A. thorough      B. long      C. unexpected      D. quiet

    31. What is the text mainly about?

    A. Suggestions on how to balance work and rest.

    B. The introduction to a special Dutch lifestyle.

    C. The importance of allowing time to pause life.

    D. An explanation of some Danish words about life attitudes.

    D

At the age of nine, Felix Finkbeiner set up an organization called "Plant for the Planet", whose aim is to plant one million trees in each country of the world. It now exists in more than 130 countries and there is a Children Coordination Council made up of young people who organize plantings. It all started when Felix had to give a presentation at school about climate change. He looked for information on the Internet and was inspired by a woman who had planted 30 million trees in Africa. It gave him the idea that children could do something similar. The talk was so well received that it was suggested he talked to other schools. He started getting calls from

students who wanted to join in. The first tree was planted and "Plant for the Planet" was started.

There was a lot to do, so Felix asked his parents if he could employ someone to help if he could find the money to pay them. He contacted (联系) Toyota, the large car manufacturer, asking for support. And they agreed to help.

Six months after the planting of the first tree, Felix gave a talk to business people. In the audience was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Toyota Germany, who wanted to hear what his money was being spent on. So impressed was he that he gave Felix a chance to talk to German Toyota car dealers (经销商). They were so interested in the idea that they donated €11,000 to the project. Suddenly it spread nationally.

Felix invited journalists to a press conference to announce that 50,000 trees had been planted in Germany. His parents warned him that very few journalists might come. But it turned out to be packed and his picture was on TV screens around the country.

When he is talking about other topics he sounds like any other young person. But once he gets started on climate issues, a change comes over him. He turns into a confident public speaker. But whatever he does in the rest of his life, he has already achieved more than most of us ever do.

    32. Which of the following inspired Felix to organize "Plant for the Planet"?

    A. A tree planter in Africa.

    B. A Children Coordination Council.

    C. The strong wish to give a report online.

    D. The harmful effects of environmental pollution.

    33. How did Felix’s talk to Toyota car dealers affect him?

    A. It assisted him in earning a lot of money.     B. It helped him meet the CEO of Toyota.

    C. It benefited his project considerably.         D. It enabled him to plant the first tree.

    34. What can we infer from Paragraph 4 about Felix’s plan?

    A. It worked well as his parents expected.     B. It had to be put off.

    C. It met with public opposition.             D. It was successful.

    35. What is the author’s attitude towards Felix?

    A. He has doubts about him.          B. He gives him high praise.

    C. He is hopeful about his career.      D. He is concerned about his future.

    根据短文内容,从短文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Can’t Resist Junk Food? Study Suggests You Try This Simple Trick You’re tired and hungry. Then you catch a whiff of something delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening. It is fried chicken! 36.        A new research says that exposing to the smell of junk food for at least two minutes can actually help you make healthier food choices.

Let’s take a closer look at this process. Have you ever noticed that whatever appetizing treat catches your nose’s attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it? What will happen if you’re standing in line after a couple of minutes? 37.        And recent science says that this is actually the right moment to walk away.

The results of a series of experiments, including field studies at a supermarket and at a middle school cafeteria, show that extended exposure (of more than two minutes) to junk food smell (e. g., cookie smell) leads to lower purchases of unhealthy foods compared with healthy smell (e.g., strawberry smell) 38.        That is why long exposure to junk food smell can be as satisfactory as actually having it in your mouth, which in turn decreases the desire for consumption of junk food.

    39.        When the exposure to smell of healthy food were examined, food choices were not profoundly influenced. The reason for this is that healthy food are not connected with reward in our brain and therefore have little influence on what we desire.

So next time you’re feeling you don’t have the will power to resist that French fries, it might be as simple as sitting there and smelling all that sweetness for just a minute or two.40.

    A. It’s the same as actually eating it because your desire to eat it is satisfied

    B. It’s a response that has been researched.

    C. Get the satisfaction with none of the calories.

    D. It isn’t quite as irresistible as it was just moments ago.

    E. However, it’s not the same case with smell of healthy food.

    F. But wait a minute before you order.

    G. The brain doesn’t necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell or taste.

    阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 2004, my husband, Joe and I worked in a design company in Arizona. One day, when we got back home after work, my ten-year-old daughter Becky, and Joe were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of theirs.

"But why," they pleaded(恳求). "Because I dont have time to take care of a dog." "But we’ll do it." "Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?" "Yes, yes, and yes." "I don’t believe you." "We will. We promise."

They didn’t. They wanted to walk the cute dog that first day. From day two, neither of them thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, "The medium one is the most reliable."

Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld(心灵相通). Shed look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, send her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand-which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she would extend across my stomach as I watched television, and snored on my home-office couch as I worked on my design.

Even so, part of me continued to reject walking duty. Joe and Becky had promised. "Not fair," I said to myself as she and I walked. "Not fair," I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home.

In September, 2008, the Great Depression hit Arizona. With that, my husband and I were both laid off overnight. During the following six months, Joe and I hurriedly rushed here and there to seek a new job, doing anything and everything we could to request employment. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained. However, Misty still needed walking.

    读后续写

Upset as I was, I had to walk Misty while seeking a job. I felt it a heavy duty to apply my energy to the routine walk. Every time I walked Misty, I felt exhausted and fed up. One day, Misty stopped in front of me, unwilling to move forward despite my dragging the rope. Dramatically, all my anxiety, exhaustion and displeasure erupted like a volcano. I knelt down, burying my head in my hands, tears rolling down my face. Then, Misty approached me and laid her head on my knees to comfort me. I was a little embarrassed but grateful for Misty’s understandingThen I stood up, with my steps firm and powerful.

    Paragraph 2

Months going by, my life changed a little and I came to enjoy my walks with Misty. It felt more like relaxation than duty. Misty shared my negative feelings and kept walking peacefully, which comforted me a lot. Thanks to Mistys silent companion, I regained the enthusiasm to life and finally went through the hard times. With my unremitting efforts, I eventually got a new job, and so did Joe. Everything seemed to be just fine and my family went back to routine. But something did changeI had an earnest and faithful friend.
