Punishments you set should be reasonable, without violence or threat (暴力或威胁). For example, if you find your son smoking, you may limit his social activities for two weeks. You should punish your kids only in ways you have discussed before the rule is broken. A study shows that the most popular punishment is to limit kids’ TV time.

It’s understandable that you’ll be angry when rules are broken. Punishment is a way to express your anger, but it’s not a very good one. Sharing your feelings of anger, disappointment or sadness with your kids can have a better effect (效果) on them. Try to do that. When your kids know what they have done has made you sad, they will feel guilty. When they know their actions influence you greatly, they will obey rules better.

Rules are made to help your kids behave better. If your rules or ways of punishment make them unhappy or under a lot of pressure, are they helpful?

11Which of the following is the most popular way to punish kids?

ABeating them. BTelling them empty threats.

CLimiting their TV time. DUsing punishments which are not mentioned in rules.

12In the writer’s opinion, which is thought to be the best way to express anger to kids?

    APunishing them BKeeping silent.

CAsking them to do some housework. DTelling them how disappointed you are.

13The underlined word “guilty” in the passage means “________” in Chinese.

    A.激动的 B.无聊的 C.刺激的 D.内疚的

14Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

APunishment is the best way to educate kids.

BBreaking rules is common, so we don’t need to pay too much attention to it.

CParents set ways of punishment in order to make kids know the price for breaking rulers.

DMore pressure should be given 10 kids.

    15The passage mainly tells ________.

Ahow to make rules useful Bwhy to make rules in a family

Cwhy to punish kids Dhow to educate kids

Have you ever shouted at your computer because it wasn’t working? Of course, your computer can’t “shout” back. But AI researchers are working on computers that can argue and perhaps even win debates with humans.

IBM scientists recently published a paper in Nature about their new AI system-Project Debater. It can debate with people in front of a live audience. After listening to arguments from is opponent(对手), the system can search around 400 million on line articles in less than five minutes. It looks for ideas that can support its own argument.

Testing on the system began in 2019, when it debated(辩论)with Harish Natarajan, a professional debater who holds the world record for winning the most debate competitions. The topic was about subsidizing(资助)pre-school and the AI argued to support this idea.

Although the AI lost the debate in the end, the audience said it did very well. Interestingly, 58 percent of the audience said that Project Debater increased their knowledge about the topic — only 20 percent said the same about Natarajan.

According to Scientific American, the results show that the system is able to make logical statements. However, winning a debate is never the researchers’ goal. Their goal is to help humans make better decisions, according to Raint Aharanov, manager of the Project Debater team. “I can debate both sides so it can very quickly help you understand both sides of the problem, so you have a wider view of the problem and can make a better decision,” Aharanov said for TechXplore.

    16How does Project Debater work?

①Forms ideas that can support its own argument

    ②Listens to is opponent’s arguments

    ③Searches for online articles

    ④Debates its opponent

    A①②③④ B②③①④ C③②①④ D④②①③

17While debating Harish Natarajan, Project Debater ________.

Awon the debate in the end Bargued about subsidizing pre-school

Cset a debating world record Doften argued against itself

18What did the audience think about the debate between Natarajan and the AI system?

A58 percent thought Natarzjan was more knowledgeable than the system.

BOne-fifth of the audience thought the system wouldn’t win the debate.

CMore than half of the audience said they learned something from the system.

    DThe system had some disadvantages.

19With Project Debater, we might ________.

Abetter understand problems while making decisions Bnever make mistakes when dealing with problems

Chave fewer arguments while solving problems Dlearn how to form logical statements in arguments

20What is the main idea for this article?

AProject Debater is a better debater than humans. BArtificial Intelligence can also be logical.

CAI can make better decisions for us. DTechnology helps us to learn more knowledge.

Looking at the undone homework on his desk always makes David Grey feel uncomfortable. More often than not, David leaves his homework behind and surfs the Internet or watches TV instead, waiting until the last minute. “But the longer I wait,” says David, aged 15, “the more I worry.”

Everyone procrastinates (拖延) because they want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task. You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable tasks such as planning a vacation. “Some people procrastinate cleaning. Some people procrastinate by cleaning,” says Professor Peter Stone. Research has shown that the top tasks young people procrastinate are studying and going to bed. “One big cause for procrastination is that people are afraid of failure, of not meeting others’ expectations,” Stone adds.

Some people believe that procrastination will make them thrive. But researchers disagree. “I did a study several years ago, asking procrastinators to finish a task in a certain period of time,” says Stone. “They did worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and they took longer. But they thought they did better.” No matter what the cause is, procrastination is usually not going to be good for you. For example, bedtime procrastination can lead to sleeplessness, which in turn can cause many other health problems.

For those who need some drives to stop procrastinating, the best advice might be to take action first. If you’ve been procrastinating on forming a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes. A little bit of progress will get you moving.

Next, find something to help you remember to take action. If you want to go to bed at 10:30 pm, you might set a timed dimmer switch (渐暗开关) at 10 pm. When the lights are dimmer, you’ll start going to bed. It works for most people.

Finally, reward yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you’ve run 3 km, enjoy your favourite ice-cream. But be careful: it won’t work the other way around.

21What can be the best title of this passage?

AA day of a procrastinator. BProcrastination: yes or no?

CSay goodbye to procrastination. DWant to feel good now? Procrastinate!

22What is the main reason for people’s procrastination?

AThey want to avoid doing hard work. BThey fear to lose and let others down.

CThey need to finish the top tasks first. DThey plan to do the enjoyable tasks last.

23The underlined word “thrive” in paragraph 3 most probably means ________.

    Athink faster Bwork more successfully

Cgive up more easily Dworry too much

24What should David do if he wants to stop procrastinating on a writing task?

APut on some soft music to help think actively.

BEnjoy a favourite ice cream, and then start writing.

CSearch the Internet for enough ideas before starting.

DPick up a pen and write down possible starting sentences.

25What is the purpose of this article?

AIt tells the disadvantages of procrastination.

    BIt explains why people procrastinates.

CIt shows people the way to shake off procrastination.

DIt helps readers have a better understanding of procrastination.

    三、阅读还原65

You may know the saying: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. 26 The study used fruit flies, as they share many genes with humans. Researchers gave one group of fruit flies normal food, and the other group of fruit flies got the same food and apples. The results showed that flies that ate apples lived an average of 55 days longer than the flies that didn’t. 27

The researchers believe that the antioxidants(抗氧化剂)found in apples are good for people’s health.

28 They found that those women who often ate apples were 20 percent less likely to have a heart attack

Scientists have recently discovered the apple’s genetic code. This allows scientists to make new kinds of fruits that are healthier. 29 Antioxidants help to keep eyes and joints(关节)healthy and protect against heart attacks and cancer.

Another new apples may be shown in supermarkets in just four or five years. 30 They are said to be “extra healthy” apples that can stop people from overeating.

AResearchers have already used this information to grow apples with added antioxidants.

BA recent study has discovered another saying: An apple a day keeps the old age away.

CThis kind of apple can help people lose weight.

DThey also found that apple-eating flies were more able to walk, climb as they became old.

E.Besides apples, they ate the same food as the fruit flies which didn’t eat apples.

F.In another experiment, researchers studied the diets of thousands of women.

Don’t waste what’s on your plate

Today about 821 million people around the world go hungry every day. The food crisis in 2021 will be even worse due to the impact of COVID-19. Saving food is a traditional virtue of the Chinese nation. Even though people are living a rich life today, we should also advocate frugality and avoid wasting food.

What should we do to save food? Here are some suggestions. Firstly, don’t order more than what you want to eat in a restaurant. Make it a habit not to waste food. Secondly, if you can’t eat all the food you have ordered, take the rest of it home.

I believe if everyone tries their best, more and more food can be saved. Let’s get started!
