The incredible patterns may lk artificial n this page, but they are, in fact, the visual image f hw sund waves interact as they travel acrss a surface. The study f these figures is called cymatics, which cmes frm the Greek wrd “kima” (wave) and was first created by Swiss scientist Hans Jenny in 1967, but the phenmena had been bserved fr hundreds f years by the likes f Da Vinci and Galile.
The patterns are best bserved using thin sheet f either metal r glass, knwn as a Chladni plate, cnnected t a signal generatr which can vibrate (震动) at a variety f audi frequencies. The sheet has set frequencies at which it will naturally resnate (共振) as the generated sund waves travel thrugh it. This creates an area where the waves either cmbine destructively - peak meets trugh (波谷)-t cancel each ther ut, r cnstructively - peak meets peak - t frm a larger wave. These sectins are called ndes and antindes, respectively xkw.
The effect f these vibratins is invisible until a medium (介质)-usually a liquid, r fine particles f a slid material such as sand r salt - is added t the plate. When the generatr is set t ne f the plate's natural frequencies, the water r sand will shift away frm the busy antindes and twards the quieter nde regins. The resulting figures vary depending n the rate f vibratin as well as the shape and size f the Chladni plate, but all demnstrate unbelievable symmetry (对称性).
This methd fr visualizing sund, as well as being a remarkable frm f natural art, can be used acrss many fields f scientific research, and ne example is the science f cean.
