No wonder English is such a challenge for non-native speakers. The language has more words than any other—over 1 million, according to the Global Language Monitor. Out of this number, the average (平均的) American college student knows between 8,000-15,000.
Realizing that words are the building blocks of language, many Chinese students try hard to catch up. They often make long lists of words, and memorize their meanings and Chinese translations.
The bad news is that this method may do them little good when it comes to college entrance tests (入学考试), like the SATs. For these tests, a student needs to fully understand many words and their different uses.
But the good news is that there are better ways to build your English vocabulary.
Vocabulary learning system (系统)
The first thing to do is to develop an organized (有条理的) but easy way of collecting and learning new words. For example, a card system should include the following information:
Word—Simple definition (定义) in English—Phrase or sentence—Related (相关的) words— Synonyms (同义词) and antonyms (反义词) —Chinese meaning on the back of the card.
The good thing about this system is that with a single card, a student can learn not just one word, but a group of related words.
Keep your cards on a removable metal ring, so you can carry them around and add more to your collection every day.
Learn by theme (主题), not alphabet
Experts have found that people understand and remember facts better if they are given in logical (合逻辑的) groups. For example, it is much easier to remember words that are related to each other than it is to remember a list of unrelated words.
Creating lists of words related to common themes—such as friendship, family, wealth, poverty, careers, sciences—will be much easier to learn and remember than collecting words related only by their first letters.
21. Why is English learning a challenge to non-native speakers, according to the writer?
A. English grammar is different from Chinese grammar.
B. English has the largest vocabulary among languages.
C. It’s difficult for them to understand the logic of the language.
D. Many English words have different meanings and usages.
22. What problem do Chinese students have in studying English according to the article?
A. Their method of learning English vocabulary is poor.
B. They think there’s no need to learn a large vocabulary.
C. They do not work hard enough to increase their vocabulary.
D. They find it hard to communicate with native speakers.
23. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. American college students have a vocabulary of more than 15,000 words on average.
B. Memorization of words is of little help in learning English.
C. Students should not use Chinese when they memorize English words.
D. SATs examiners look out for how well Chinese students understand English words.
B
In Europe many people died during the Second World War. As a result, at the end of the war there were many orphans (孤儿) there. A man called Hermann Gmeiner wanted to help these children. His idea was simple. He wanted orphans to have a home, and he wanted them to have the care and kindness of parents. Gmeiner asked people to give him some money. With this money he built the first SOS Children's Village at Imst, in Austria. It opened in1949. This is how the SOS stand for “Save Our Souls.” This means, “Please help us!” An SOS Children’ village gives help to orphans. Hermann Gmeiner’s idea for helping orphans soon spread all over the world. By 1983 there were 170 SOS Children's Villages in the world. People in many countries give money to help the villages.
Today the children from the first village have grown up. Now some of them work in other SOS Children’s Villages. In SOS Villages orphans live in family groups. There are several houses in each village. The biggest village has 40 or 50 houses! Between seven and ten children live in a house. A woman lives with each group of children and looks after them. She gives the children a lot of love and kindness. She cooks meals for them and makes comfortable, happy home for them.
Of course, the children don’t spend all their time in the village. They go to school; they go out with their friends. But the village gives them a home—sometimes for the first time in their lives.
24. The SOS Children’s Villages are built for________ first.
A. the children who are poor B. the orphans in Europe
C. the kind women D. people who died in the war.
25. We can conclude from the article that the money for helping the SOS Villages mainly comes from ________ .

C. people in different countries D. the orphans themselves

A. She lives with the children and looks after them. B. She gives the children a lot of love and kindness.

One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?
Listen - Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.
Help them - If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra (额外的) pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.
Be there for them - Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time!
Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old!
31. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should _____.
A. give him or her some advice B. just listen unless asked
C. calm him or her down D. share your feelings as well
32. When we provide help for our friends, we should _____.
A. try to do everything for them B. ignore their faults
C. change their bad habits first D. put them before ourselves
33. What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe’s words?
A. Life without a friend is death. B. A friend is easier lost than found.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. A man is known by his friends.
34. Which of the following can be put in the blank of the last paragraph?
A. Make plans. B. Enjoy yourself. C. Understand your friends. D. Play with your friends.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to find a good friend. B. How to help friends in trouble.
