    In ne recent case, a 12-year-ld by frm Califrnia develped a skin disclratin n his left lap after playing cmputer games a few hurs every day fr several mnths. “He recgnized that the laptp gt ht n the left side; hwever, he did nt change its psitin,〞 Swiss researches reprted in an article published Mnday in the jurnal Pediatrics.
    Anther similar case is a Virginia law student wh needed treatment fr the sptted darkening n her leg. Dr. Kimberley Salkey, wh treated the yung wman, learned the student spent abut six hurs a day wrking with her cmputer placed n her lap. As Dr. Salkey later learnt, the temperature under the laptp culd reach 51 degrees. That case, frm 2007, is ne f 10 laptp-related cases reprted in medical jurnals in the past six years.
    The cnditin can als be caused by veruse f heating pads (垫子) and ther heat surces that usually aren't ht enugh t cause burns. It's generally harmless but can als cause such permanent (永久的) skin darkening. In very rare cases, it can cause damage leading t skin cancers, said the Swiss researchers, Drs. Andreas Arnld and Peter Itin frm University Hspital Basel. They d nt mentin any skin cancer cases linked t laptp use, but suggest, t be safe, placing a carrying case under the laptp if yu have t hld it n yur lap.
