Suddenly George said, "Look, Tony, I made green! "
"How did you do it?" asked Tony.
"I put yellow paint on top of my blue paint — yellow and blue put together make green!" shouted George. Other children came around to watch and wanted to do it themselves.
This is an example of discovery learning or hands-on learning.
People remember things better when they learn them by doing. Here is an example. How will you learn to play football?
Buy a book and read about how to play football or buy a video about football? Or go to the playground and ask a person to teach you?
Which way will help you learn the game best? Learning on the playground is the best way for most people because they try the game and learn the rules as they play. They learn in a hands-on way.
Hands-on learning is good for children. The learner takes an active part in it instead of just sitting and listening. This is the way that we want our children to learn. In order to learn best, children must take an active part in hands-on activities every day. Some good examples of hands-on activities are working puzzles, painting, playing simple board games together and so on.

"The products were damaged(损坏) by someone in our company," the boss says." But this shouldn't affect the use of the products. If the customers find it, we'll say it was caused by the trucking(货运)company that delivered(运载) the products."
Hearing this, Nancy feels uncomfortable. "But didn't our workers damage the products?" Her boss looks at her," Yeah, but the customers don't know that. I'll just say they were damaged while they were delivered. Don't worry, the customers won't even notice the damage."
Nancy's boss walks out. Nancy sits at her desk and she's not sure what to do. She knows it's dishonest to blame(将---归咎于) the damage on the trucking company. It's also dishonest to cheat her customers and give them less perfect products.

Passage 4
What would you do if you had trouble seeing clearly? You would probably go to an eye doctor who might give you glasses. For many people around the world, however, such a way isn't that simple.
The World Health Organization reports that glasses can help one billion people in the world. Yet places like Ghana have only one eye doctor every 8 million people. This makes glasses almost impossible to get. Joshua Silver, a teacher at Oxford University, however, may have solved the problem.
Mr. Silver has developed liquid(液体)-filled glasses that users can adjust(调整) by themselves without seeing a doctor! The lenses(镜片) are filled with oil. Using a dial on the glasses, the user changes the amount of oil. This changes the strength(度数) of the lens. After the user finds the right strength, he then fixes the lens.
Results show that among those who have tried the glasses, around 80% are satisfied. Mr. Silver's goal is for everyone who still needs glasses to have such glasses as soon as possible. With a little more effort, Mr. Silver thinks that his goal might be achieved in the near future.

One day, as Myra sat alone on the way to school, she looked at the seat across from her. She saw a girl sitting all by herself. The girl looked lonely, too. Myra wondered if she should say hello.
But what if the girl didn't want to be her friend? Maybe she already had a lot of friends. What if the girl ignored (忽视) her? What if she laughed at her? Myra stared at the floor of the bus. Finally, she took a deep breath to relax and smiled at the girl. The girl smiled back.
Myra said, “Hi, I'm Myra. Do you want to sit next to me?”

Nadia smiled. “Good-bye, Myra. I'll save you a seat.”

Passage 3
Most people think sleepwalkers (梦游者) walking around at night. But in fact, not all sleepwalkers walk. Some only sit up or get out of bed or act like how they often do during the day when they are sleeping! But most sleep walkers do get up and go around for a few seconds or half an hour.
Sleepwalkers' eyes are open, but they don't see the same way as they do during the day, and they often think they are in different rooms of the house or different places. Sleepwalkers usually go back to bed themselves and they don't remember it in the morning.
Scientists say that sleepwalking may sometimes happen when a person is sick, has a fever, is not getting enough sleep, or he has much stress.
There's no medicine for sleepwalking, but here are some ideas from doctors to help sleepwalkers:
·Relax at bedtime by listening to quiet music.
·Go to bed at the same time every day.
·Keep everything quiet when you are trying to sleep.
·Don't drink a lot in the evening and be sure you go to the washroom before going to bed.
Remember: don't shout to sleepwalkers when they're sleeping, or they can get confused (迷惑的) and scared.

Passage 4
After leaving school for many years, a group of graduates (毕业生) visited their teacher. All of them complained about problems and stress in their work and life.
The teacher went to the kitchen and returned with a large bottle of coffee and many kinds of cups—china (瓷), plastic and glass. He told them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in their hands, the teacher said, “If you noticed, all the nice-looking and expensive cups had been taken, but the simple and cheap ones had been left behind. Although it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source (根源)of your problems and stress. In fact, the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. it is just a tool to contain (容纳) what we drink.”
What all of them really wanted was coffee, not the cups, but they all went for the best cups. And then they began to watch others' cups. Life is the coffee; jobs, money and the social position are the cups. The cups we have do not change the quality of our life.
Sometimes, if we only pay attention to the cup, we will fail to enjoy the coffee.
The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

49. The passage tells us that________.
A. the cup can add quality to the coffee
B. the cup can change the quality of our life
C. different kinds of cups should be given to different kinds of people

It was another sad day. I came home from school, changed my clothes and got ready for work. I worked at a local restaurant in town as a waiter. I didn't like the job very much. When I was working, three elderly ladies walked in and sat at a table by the windows. I was quite busy, trying to clean up all the dirty tables. These elderly women were watching how hard I was working to make sure every table was clean and ready for the next customers. When they finished their meals, I took their plates back to the kitchen.
