    Envy
It’s a familiar but uncmfrtable feeling. Yur best friend will marry a handsme dctr, and the cngratulatry hug yu ffer lacks genuine warmth. Yur friend is made the team fr Saturday’s big game, and yu take a certain pleasure in telling him yu can’t be there t watch him play. Yu smile but a vice in yur head asks, why them and nt yu?
Envy is a shrtcming f character we like t keep in ur heart secretly. Hw shameful is it nt t be lking frward with delight t yur day as yur best friend's bridesmaid! Wh wuld hpe yur friend might suffer sme injury, s yu can take his place n the team?
Envy is everywhere. It seems t be in ur nature t hate thers' gifts and gd frtune, especially if we see them as advantages they shuldn't have.
Envy raises its ugly head when we fcus n what we want but we dn’t pssess nw. Wrse still, we may even wish fr and take pleasure in smene's lsing what we have always desired. When yu cmpare yurself and yur life unfavrably with yur friend r yur clleague, yu can nly keep yur darker emtins.
S, is there a slutin? Is there anything yu can d t get rid f this mst ungenerus emtin? Well, why nt make envy the mtivatin yu need fr self-imprvement? The best weapn against envy is nt t cmpete where yu can’t shine, but t d yur abslute best where yu can.
Start by making peace with yurself, and accept the gifts which make yu unique. Make an agreement with yurself t be the best yu can be. Then find the qualities in thers that cause yur envy. Is it smene’s singing vice, their wrk prmtin, their new car? Envy shws us the things we’d like t have. S, make a plan t earn what's imprtant t yu.
And aim fr genuine pleasure in the achievements and gd frtune f thers. Cheer n yur friend when he scres that gal. Enjy yur best friend’s wedding day. Then g ut and d smething special, and make yurself wnderfully prud f yu.

Curisity Is an Increasingly Rare Virtue
Mst f the breakthrugh discveries and remarkable inventins thrughut histry, frm flints (打火石) fr starting a fire t self-driving cars, have smething in cmmn: They are the result f curisity. But the jurnalist Ian Leslie, in his newly-published bk Curius: The Desire t Knw and Why Yur Future Depends n It, insists that curisity is a much verlked human virtue, crucial t ur success, and we are lsing it.
Leslie presents cnsiderable evidence fr the claim that the sciety as a whle is grwing less curius. In the U.S. and Eurpe, fr example, the rise f the Internet, amng ther scial and technlgical changes, has led t a declining cnsumptin f news frm utside the reader’s brders. Indeed, Ggle, fr which Leslie expresses admiratin, is als his frequent whipping by (替罪羊): we seek nly the infrmatin we want. But nt everything is t be blamed n technlgy. The decline in interest in literary fictin is als ne f the causes identified by Leslie.
Why is this a prblem? Because withut curisity we will lse the spirit f innvatin and entrepreneurship (企业家精神). Wrse still, that lack f curisity prduces a relative lack f knwledge, and the lack f knwledge is difficult if nt impssible t cmpensate fr later n.
Frtunately, sme strategies can be emplyed t develp curisity: If yu just accept the wrld as it is withut trying t dig deeper, yu will certainly lse the ‘hly curisity’. Of curse, ne effective way t dig deeper beneath the surface is asking questins: What is that? Why is it made that way? Wh invented it? Hw des it wrk? if yu see learning as a burden, there’s n way yu will want t dig deeper int anything. That will just make the burden heavier. But if yu think f learning as smething fun, yu will naturally want t dig deeper.

Fr many Chinese high schl students wh want t study at a US university, this ften means having t pass traditinal US cllege exams such as the SAT r ACT, as well as language tests such as TOEFL r IELTS. Luckily, the University f New Hampshire (UNH) started accepting gaka scres as part f its applicatin prcess this summer.
The new plicy means that Chinese students n lnger have t take the SAT r ACT, as gaka scres can be used instead. This pens anther dr fr high schl senirs wh are dissatisfied with their gaka results. Many f them may want t wait anther year t sit the exam again, as 1.5 millin did in 2017, accrding t The New Yrk Times.
The gaka has been criticized by sme as a ne-sht exam that fcuses n rte learning rather than creativity. Hwever, recent years have seen that mre and mre US universities begin t accept gaka scres as part f the applicatin prcess. A handful f universities in Eurpe, Australia, Canada and Singapre have als adpted similar plicies. It has the advantage f being what educatinal experts call a ‘criterin-referenced’ exam: It tests whether students are able t master a given bdy f knwledge, as well as their ability t wrk hard and cnsistently. Paul Fitzgerald, USF president, believes that there's n perfect predictr f academic perfrmance. He nted that the SAT itself isn't perfect, either.
“Many studies have shwn that the SAT is nt very gd predictr f hw well students will d at university,” he tld Quartz.
Despite the gaka’s grwing ppularity amng US universities, “there is a lng way t g befre the US educatin circle fully recgnizes the gaka, as there are still many US universities that dn’t accept the gaka as part f their applicatin prcess.

    The Smell f Mney
Fr many years large supermarkets have been encuraging us t spend mney by pumping the smell f freshly-baked bread int their stres. Nw Dale Air, a leading firm f arma(芳香) cnsultants, has been apprached by Barclays Bank t develp suitable artificial smells fr their banks. Researchers have suggested that surrunding custmers with the smell f mney will encurage them t feel relaxed and ptimistic and give them added cnfidence in the bank’s security and prfessinalism.
But befre a smell can be manufactured and intrduced int banks' air cnditining systems it must be identified and chemically analysed, and this has prved t be difficult. The prblem is that bankntes and cins tend t pick up the smell f their surrundings. S cash that has been sitting in a cash register at a fishmngers will smell f fish, and bankntes used t pay fr meals in restaurants will tend t smell f fd.
It may be a challenge, but arma experts have little dubt that the use f artificial smells can be an effective frm f subcnscius advertising. Lunn Ply, a British travel cmpany, intrduced the smell f ccnuts int its travel agencies and saw a big increase in spending by hliday makers. Many cafes nw have electric dispensers that release the smell f freshly rasted cffee near their entrances, encuraging custmers t cme in and have a drink r snack. Even car maker Rlls-ryce has been spraying the inside f its cars t enhance the smell f the leather seats.
‘The sense f smell is prbably the mst basic f all human senses, explains researcher Jim certain smells stirring memries and feelings in a way that few ther stimulants can match. O’Rirdan. "There is a direct pathway frm the nse t the brain. It is certainly true that mst peple find phenmenn marketing cnsultants have lng recgnized, but until recently have been unable t use.
“We’ve made great prgress but the technlgy f arma prductin is till in its infancy,’’ says Orirdan. “Wh knws where it will take us.”

Vacatins are a chance t take break frm wrk, see the wrld and enjy time with family. But d they make yu happier? Researchers frm the Netherlands set ut t measure the effect that vacatins have n verall happiness and hw lng it lasts. They studied happiness levels amng 1, 530 Dutch adults, 974 f whm tk a vacatin during the 32-week study perid. The study shwed that the largest lift in happiness cmes frm the simple act f planning vacatin. In the study, the effect f vacatin expectatin lifted happiness fr eight weeks.
After the vacatin, happiness quickly drpped back t baseline levels fr mst peple. Hw much stress r relaxatin a traveler experienced n the trip appeared t influence pst-vacatin happiness. There was n pst-trip happiness benefit fr travelers wh said the vacatin was “neutral” r “stressful.”
Surprisingly, even thse travelers wh described the trip as “relaxing” shwed n additinal jump in happiness after the trip. “They were n happier than peple wh had nt been n hliday,” said the lead authr, Jeren Nawijn, turism research lecturer at Breda University. The nly vacatiners wh experienced an increase in happiness after the trip were thse wh reprted feeling “very relaxed” n their vacatin. Amng thse peple, the vacatin happiness effect lasted fr just tw weeks after the trip befre returning t baseline levels.
One reasn vacatins dn’t increase happiness after the trip may have t d with the stress f returning t wrk. And fr sme travelers, the hliday itself was stressful. “In cmments frm peple, the thing they mentined mst referred t disagreements with a travel partner r being ill,” Mr. Nawijn said.
Since mst f the happiness bst cmes frm planning and expecting a vacatin, the study suggests that peple may get mre ut f several small trips a year than ne big vacatin, Mr Nawijn said.

    Virtual Fitness
Exercise plays a very imprtant rle in a healthy lifestyle. But yu may nt have time r mney t g t a gym n a regular basis. The gd news is that tday's technlgy lets yu access fitness classes frm the cmfrt f yur hme. A quick Internet search will turn up thusands f nline fitness classes. Yu can watch vides n yur phne, cmputer r tablet and d the exercises right where yu are. All yu need is an Internet cnnectin and a space large enugh t mve arund in.
Online fitness classes take a wide variety f frms. Sme fcus n stretches and slw mvements. Other classes invlve fast aerbic activity, while thers build muscle strength. Sme require equipment such as weights, but thers use nly yur bdy. This means that yu can chse a class that des what yu like. And yu can try a different ne whenever yu like.
Anyne can pst a fitness vide n the Internet. Nt everyne knws what they are ding. S it is imprtant t think abut wh is teaching the class. Try t find teachers wh are certified by an rganizatin with a gd reputatin. I tried sme virtual fitness classes several years ag.The reasn was simple: cnvenience. I culd d a fitness class at any time f day. I didn't need t travel t a gym and back, which saved me a lt f time. But being able t wrk ut any time meant I kept putting it ff. I'd d everything else first and then the day wuld be ver. I’d never actually get arund t exercising.
Having t exercise at a definite time means I have t put it n my schedule. S fr me, scheduled classes such as thse at a gym are helpful.
Anyhw,if the gym isn't fr yu, yu may want t give an nline fitness class a try.

    Brain Functin
Declining mental functin is ften seen as a prblem f ld age, but certain aspects f brain functin actually begin their decline in yung adulthd, a new study suggests.
The study, which fllwed mre than 2,000 healthy adults between the ages f 18 and 60, fund that certain mental functins - including measures f abstract reasning, mental speed and puzzle-slving --- started t dull as early as age 27. Dips in memry, meanwhile, generally became apparent arund age 37.
On the ther hand, indicatrs f a persn's accumulated knwledge -- like perfrmance n tests f vcabulary and general knwledge - kept imprving with age, accrding t the findings published in the jurnal Neurbilgy f Aging. The results d nt mean that yung adults need t start wrrying abut their memries. Mst peple's minds functin at a high level even in their later years, accrding t researcher Timthy Salthuse.
"These patterns suggest that sme types f mental flexibility decrease relatively early in adulthd, but that the amunt f knwledge ne has, and the effectiveness f integrating it with ne's abilities, may increase thrughut all f adulthd if there are n diseases," Salthuse said in a news release.
The study included healthy, educated adults wh tk standard tests f memry, reasning and perceptin at the utset and at sme pints ver the next seven years. The tests are designed t detect subtle changes in mental functin, and invlve slving puzzles, recalling wrds and details frm stries, and identifying patterns in cllectins f letters and symbls. In general, Salthuse and his clleagues fund, certain aspects f cgnitin generally started t decline in the 20s t 30s. The findings shed light n nrmal age-related changes in mental functin, which culd aid in understanding the prcess f dementia(痴呆), accrding t the researchers.

    My Sprting Her: Rger Federer
Almst every sprtspersn wh has reached the tp f their field was inspired by an athlete wh came befre them. Often, it is ne frm their wn sprt, but smetimes that inspiratin can cme frm an entirely different discipline. Sctland ftballer Jen Beattie tells us abut her sprting her: Rger Federer.
Frm an early age, I have been a big tennis fan. I have always lved watching Wimbledn, and when I was grwing up, Rger Federer was the men’s champin every year. He had sme impressive finals--the ne against Andy Rddick in 2009 in particular--but he always seemed t prevail. Federer was ridiculus at the time, winning 12 Grand Slams between 2003 and 2007. And I culd just watch that backhand f his in actin ver and ver again.
I lve the way Federer carries himself n the curt. His calmness is smething I have always admired. In my ftball career, I have played in big, imprtant matches fr my club and particularly fr my cuntry. When I am walking nt a ftball pitch, I knw I have the full team behind me. I always have ten ther players wh have my back t help me find slutins. Federer just has t figure them ut n his wn, which is very different.
There are any number f variables yu can thrw int the mix when examining what makes a sprting legend. A big ne fr me is the quality f the ppnents yu have t vercme. T win 20 Grand Slam titles in the arguably greatest era f men’s tennis, as well as reaching anther 11 finals, marks Federer ut as a legend.
After Federer wn Wimbledn in 2012, the Slams started t dry up fr him. He lst the 2015 U.S. Open final t Nvak Djkvic. In 2016, time seemed t be catching up with him, with knee and back injuries ruining his seasn. At that stage, the chances f Federer returning t tp frm seemed remte. And yet there he was in 2017, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledn, and then as the defending champin in Melburne in 2018.
That belief and cnfidence he must have had within himself t deep ging, and even change little aspects f his game t nt just prlng his career but actually imprve as a player, is s impressive. Nt many peple lk t d that when the end is in sight.
Perhaps that is a natural thing sme tp athletes will figure ut as they g alng. Federer, hwever, has dne that n an unbelievable level. T be 40 and still able t perate at the level he is nw is a testament t his greatness.
