When educatrs think f literacy — the ability t read and write — they ften place mre imprtance n a student’s ability t read and fully cmprehend a piece f writing. But experts say critical and creative writing skills are equally imprtant. And, they are t ften __41__ in the classrm.
Cmpared t reading, writing is mre __42__. It helps students be independent thinkers, take __43__ f their stries and ideas and cmmunicate them clearly t thers. Unless we want an educatin system just fcused n making peple __44__ and nt fcused n helping them t be prducers, this __45__ n reading nly — which des happen in s many places — is very shrt-sighted.
Students’ writing wrk nw usually __46__ n examining a text, instead f presenting a new idea. Writing shuld be the central thing yu’re learning, rather than rather than writing in respnse t a text n a test r writing t demnstrate yu’ve learned what smene has taught yu.
    Writing imprves reading skills

Mre than 90 percent f yung peple in the Writpia prgram d nt __48__ their writing abilities when they start, Wallace-Segall said. But she said they learn t enjy the writing prcess and becme mre effective __49__, t.
Emplyers tday seek wrkers all the time wh can write well. Digital tls __50__ mean that peple are interacting with the internet thrugh writing. Yung peple are __51__ writing all the time — thrugh text messages, emails and n scial media. Every yung persn tday is a writer if they are cnnected t the internet.
    Wrking thrugh __52__ by writing
Supprters f writing-centered teaching add that writing __53__ yung peple. When students wn their __54__ and tell their stries, they becme nt nly strnger and mre cnfident writers, but als strnger and mre cnfident individuals.
Writing als helps students wrk thrugh difficulties they face in life. They’re nt writing a stry abut a difficult father r directly abut a bully in class, but they are creating a __55__ scenari that might feel distant enugh fr them t explre sme f these prblems at a deeper level. Thus, teaching students t write well can have an effect n the larger wrld. Thse adults can see that the stries they’re telling themselves abut thse yung peple are ften wrng and ding a lt f harm in the wrld.

LOVE it r hate it, there is n escape frm Internet slang.
This is especially true amng yung peple in sme English-speaking cuntries such as Australia, the UK and the US. These days, if they haven’t caught up with the latest ppular Internet slang, chances are that they ften feel ut f the lp n scial media.
Take these psts by The Washingtn Pst fr example: “David Bwie dying is ttes tradge” and “When Ckie hugged Jamal it made me ttes emsh.”
What n earth d these mean? Well, “ttes” is a shrt frm f the adverb “ttally”. Likewise, “tradge” means “tragic” and “emsh” means “emtinal”.
It seems that, fr millennials (thse brn between the early 1980s and late 1990s), typing in this abbreviated frm is nt nly time-saving but als hip.
Many millennial slang wrds are frmed by what linguists call the practice f “ttesing” – the systematic abbreviatin f wrds, accrding t a recent article in The Washingtn Pst.
Sme peple think that millennial slang affects the English language negatively. Hwever, Melburne University linguist Rsey Billingtn desn't agree.
“When yu are able t use language in a creative way, yu shw yu are linguistically knwledgeable because yu knw the language rules well enugh t use wrds in a different way,” Billingtn tld
Her view is backed up by tw linguists, Lauren Spradlin and Taylr Jnes, frm the City University f New Yrk and the University f Pennsylvania respectively. The tw believe that ttes-speak is a highly-rganized system that can nly be used by speakers wh have mastered English prnunciatin.
The ability t break apart syllables and mix different sunds tgether is key. “Ttesing is abut sunds, and it fllws the smetimes-cmplicated sund system f English,” Jnes tld The Washingtn Pst. “Ttesing is nt randm. On the cntrary, it has strict rules t fllw. Yu need t be very fluent in the English language t be able t understand ttes-speak.”

    A. Wrried. B. Cautius. C. Psitive. D. Critical.
    59. Which f the fllwing might Taylr Jnes agree with?
    A. Internet slang is mstly created by prfessinal linguists.

Franz Kafka wrte that “A bk must be the ax(斧子)fr the frzen sea inside us.” I nce shared this sentence with a class f seventh graders, and it didn't seem t require any explanatin.
We’d just finished Jhn Steinbeck’s nvel Of Mice and Men. When we read the end tgether ut lud in class, my tughest by, a star basketball player, wept a little, and s did I. “Are yu crying?” ne girl asked, as she gt ut f her chair t take a clser lk. “I am,” I tld her, “and the funny thing is I’ve read it many times.”
But they understd. When Gerge shts Lennie, the tragedy is that we realize it was always ging t happen. In my 14 years f teaching in a New Yrk City public middle schl, I’ve taught kidswith imprisned parents, abusive parents, irrespnsible parents; kids wh are parents themselves; kids wh are hmeless; kids wh grew up in vilent neighbrhds. They understand, mre than I ever will, the nvel's terrible lgic—the giving way f dreams t fate.
Fr the last seven years, I have wrked as a reading enrichment teacher, reading classic wrks f literature with small grups f students frm grades six t eight. I riginally prpsed this idea t my headmaster after learning that a frmer excellent student f mine had transferred ut f a selective high schl—ne that ften attracts the literary-minded children f Manhattan's upper classes—int a less cmpetitive schl. The daughter f immigrants, with a father in prisn, she perhaps felt uncmfrtable with her new classmates. I thught additinal “cultural capital” culd help students like her develp better in high schl, where they wuld unavidably meet, perhaps fr the first time, students wh came frm hmes lined with bkshelves, whse parents had earned Ph.D.’s.
Alng with Of Mice and Men, my grups read: Sunder, The Red Pny, Lrd f the Flies, Rme and Juliet and Macbeth. The students didn’t always read frm the expected pint f view. Abut The Red Pny, ne student said, “it's abut being a man, it’s abut manliness.”I had never befre seen the parallels between Scarface and Macbeth, nr had I heard Lady Macbeth's speech read as raps, but bth made sense; the interpretatins were playful, but serius. Once intrduced t Steinbeck's writing, ne by went n t read The Grapes f Wrath and tld me repeatedly hw amazing it was that “all these peple hate each ther, and they’re all white.” His histrical view was bradening, his sense f his wn cuntry deepening. Year after year, frmer students visited and tld me hw prepared they had felt in their first year in cllege as a result f the classes.
Year after year, hwever, we are increasing the number f practice tests. We are trying t teach students t read increasingly cmplex texts, nt fr emtinal punch but fr text cmplexity. Yet, we cannt enrich the minds f ur students by testing them n texts that ignre their hearts. We are teaching them that wrds d nt amaze but cnfuse. We may succeed in raising test scres, but we will fail t teach them that reading can be transfrmative and that it belngs t them.
63.The underlined wrds in Paragraph 1 prbably mean that a bk helps t______________.

B.Because they had read the nvel many times.
C.Because they gt the explanatin frm the teacher..
D.Because they had similar life experiences.
65.The girl left the selective high schl pssibly because______________.
    A.she was a literary-minded girl
    B.her parents were immigrants
C.she culdn't fit in with her class
D.her father was then in prisn

    Beaver r Plar Bear?
Beaver r plar bear? This is the questin Canadians face as they rethink hw they want t present themselves t the rest f the wrld?
It all started when a Cnservative senatr, Nicle Eatn, called fr the replacement f the beaver as Canada’s fficial symbl. The beaver has represented the cuntry since 1975. “A cuntry’s symbls can change ver time as lng as they shw the spirit f the peple and the natin,” she tld Reuters.
The debate that fllwed “has set fur flying acrss the cuntry,” accrding t the BBC.
A stne beaver nw sits n tp f the entrance t the Canadian Parliament and appears n Canadian cins.
Supprters f the beaver say the animal is mdest and hardwrking. Glynnis Hd f the University f Alberta tld the Canadian daily newspaper the Natinal Pst that beavers are like Canadians, representing “tenacity (毅力), intelligence and an ability t survive even the harshest climates.”
Others say the beaver played an imprtant part in the histry f Canada. In the 18th century, fashinable Eurpeans wre clthes made f beaver fur. Explrers went int the Canadian wilderness t find the fur. At the same time, they discvered mre f their cuntry. One member f Parliament frm the prvince Manitba tld the BBC that remving the beaver wuld ignre its histrical impact.
Hwever, supprters f the plar bear believe it is a strng and pwerful creature. It represents curage and pride, they say. Plar bears are at the tp f the fd chain. Beavers, n the ther hand, are vegetarians. What is mre, they are beaten by birds f prey like the eagle. And which cuntry uses the eagle as its natinal symbl? Canada’s pwerful neighbur, the USA.
BBC reprter Lrraine Mallinder called this an issue f “What des being Canadian mean?”
“N wnder s many Canadians are turning t the plar bear,” she wrte. “They are fed up with being seen as a weak peple natin.”

    Dear Mike,
I’ve heard that yu’ ve read a nvel f Jules Verne and believed that “ Traveling was mrenjyable in the days befre the inventin f the aerplane”, but I beg t differ.
N dubt all the ther means f transprtatin are pale befre aerplanes, with regards t speed and safety. Cntrary t what yu’ve put frward, travelling might n be as satisfying as is descirbed in the nvel in these days, when travelers tend t wear themselves ut after an endless perid f walk and be threatened with wildlife and infectin.
Meanwhile, I highly adre flying experience. It desn’t hurt t pumper yurself with a relaxing air jumey after mnths f wrk. A pleasant jurney high shve the sky is sure t sweep yur tiredness ff, as well as prvide a feast t the eyes.
What's mre, travelling is all abut experiencing different culture and viewing unique scenery. Despite negative impacts f turism n the envirnment.
Thse are all f my pints, I am lking frward t hear frm yu again.
    Yurs,

A university degree is n guarantee f a jb, and jb hunting in itself requires a whle set f skills. If yu find yu are nt getting past the first interview, ask yurself what is happening. Is it a failure t cmmunicate r are there sme skills yu lack? Once yu see patterns emerging it will help yu decide whether the gaps yu have identified can be filled relatively easily. If yu cannt wrk ut what the mismatch is, get back t the selectin bard with mre examining questins, and find ut what yu need t d t bring yurself up t the level f qualificatin that wuld make yu mre attractive t them: but be careful t make this sund like a genuine request rather than a challenge r cmplaint.
    Paul
D nt be t dispirited if yu are turned dwn fr a jb, but think abut the reasns the emplyers give. They ften say it is because thers are ‘better qualified' but they use the term lsely. Thse wh made the secnd interview might have been studying the same subject as yu and be f similar ability level, but they had smething which made them a clser match t the selectr’s ideal. That culd be experience gained thrugh prjects r vacatin wrk, r it might be that they were better at cmmunicating what they culd ffer. D nt take the cmments at face value: think back t the interviews that generated them and make a list f where yu think the shrtfall in yur perfrmance lies. With this srt f analytical apprach yu will eventually get yur ft in the dr.
    Rebecca
Deciding hw lng yu shuld stay in yur first jb is a tugh call. Stay t lng and future emplyers may questin yur drive and ambitin. Of curse, it depends where yu are aiming. There can be advantages in mving sideways rather than up, if yu want t gain real depth f knwledge. If yu are a graduate, spending five r six years in the same jb is nt t lng prvided that yu take full advantage f the experience. Hwever, d nt use this as an excuse fr indifference. Graduates smetimes fail t take wnership f their careers and take the initiative. It is up t yur will t make the mst f what’s available within a cmpany, and t mnitr yur prgress in case yu need t mve n. This applies particularly if yu are still nt sure where yur career path lies.
    Smith
It is helpful t think thrugh what kind f experience yu need t get yur dream jb and it is nt a prblem t mve arund t a certain extent. But in the early stages f yur career, yu need a definite strategy fr reaching yur gal, s think abut that carefully befre deciding t mve n frm yur first jb. Yu must cultivate patience t master any rle. There is n guarantee that yu will get adequate training, and research has shwn that if yu d nt receive prper help in a new rle, it can take 18 mnths t master it.
