As Valentine’s Day approaches, many people with dogs will not care one bit whether they get a card. A survey by the Kennel Club has found almost one in five said they were so attached to their pet because “dogs don’t let you down” in the same way that other people might.
Hollywood legend Glenn Close took her Havanese dog Pip to the Oscars last year, describing her pet as “the best date a girl can have”. Comedian Miranda Hart and racing driver Lewis Hamilton have gone on holiday with their dogs, and actor Ryan Gosling has taken his cross-breed George, who he describes as “the great love of my life”, on to chat shows for moral support.
This could be due to the numerous benefits that come with dog ownership — from the psychological to the physical. Dogs help their owners unwind, whether that’s with a daily walk in fresh air, or with a cuddle(依偎) on a sofa. They can also be great listeners, help their owners release stress, and can play a part in improving their health and fitness.
Nevertheless, for those dog owners who are still looking for love, the research suggests their pet might help. More than a fifth of those questioned said they had been asked out on a date with their dog appearing best for attracting a potential partner. Among those responding to the survey, 21 percent said they were more likely to date someone who also had a dog.
Mr. Lambert, a spokesman for the Kennel Club, said, “This is quite unsurprising when you consider that dogs are a great ice-breaker, when strangers may otherwise not look twice at each other, and that we tend to have more associations about people who love dogs.”
People who owned a pet dog were also very likely to say their pet may have helped them out romantically.
4. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?
A. Summarize the previous paragraph.
B. Provide some advice for the pet owners.
C. Introduce some celebrities to the readers.
D. Give some examples to support the view above.
5. What does the underlined word “unwind” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

B. Because a pet dog is the best friend of mankind.
C. Because a pet dog adds to romantic atmosphere.
D. Because a pet dog breaks the ice of a conversation.
7. What is the author’s attitude to the company of a pet dog?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Disapproving. D. Reserved.

My colleagues and I investigated the presence of the “musical reminiscence bump(音乐记忆突点)” in a group of 470 adults who were between 18 and 82 years old. Our aim was to investigate how a person’s age when a song was popular affected three related but distinct concepts: the degree to which the song was associated with autobiographical memories, how familiar the song was and how much they liked the song.
Participants in our study were shown the titles and artists of 111 pop songs across a 65-year period (1950-2015) and provided ratings of the three concepts of interest.
We discovered that music during one’s adolescence was not only rated as more familiar, but was also associated with more autobiographical memories. This music-related reminiscence bump reached the highest around age 14. In addition, older adults (around age 40+) also liked songs from their adolescence more than other songs. However, younger adults (aged 18 — 40) did not show this same trend, and in some cases gave even lower liking ratings to music from their adolescence than music released before they were born.
This suggests that songs from our adolescence can become closely related with memories from our past even if we don’t personally value the music. This may be because it has accompanied various memorable settings from this period.
Some songs were preferred regardless of a participant’s age, however. For instance, we saw a general increase in how much people liked songs from the late 1970s to early 1980s, even in participants who weren’t yet born during that time period. This suggests pop music from certain time periods is intergenerationally valued. Examples of songs we used from this time period include Hotel California by the Eagles and Billie Jean by Michael Jackson.
8. Participants in the investigation are ___________.
A. expected to comment on the songs B. to test the three concepts of songs
C. ranging in ages from a kid to a senior D. provided the titles and singers of the songs
9. What do we know about the age 14 in paragraph 3?
A. People listen to songs less after this age.
B. People’s preferences of songs divide at this age.
C. People get most memories from songs of this age.
D. People at this age begin to have autobiographical memories.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Some songs keep alive beyond time.
B. Years around 1980 are a golden age for music.
C. The memorable situation of a song decides its popularity.
D. Hotel California and Billie Jean are adored across nations.
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Music changes our life B. Everyone is a follower of songs
C. We’re crazy about music from our youth D. Songs possess the unique features of a time
D
It’s safe to say that OLED displays are the gold standard on smartphones these days. Some OLED panels are better than others, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra features what may well be the best one to date — the device’s display is definitely the most power efficient. In fact, Samsung developed a new ultra-low-power OLED display for the new phone, and it reduces energy consumption by up to 16%.
The way Samsung did this is a little technical. OLED displays in general don’t require a backlight like LCD displays. Instead, each individual pixel(像素) is made from an organic carbon-based material that lights up when electricity is applied. OLED displays are made up of a range of layers, which serve different purposes. The core of the new OLED display tech is that Samsung found a way for electrons to flow faster between these layers, while at the same time creating a brighter light.
The power-consumption savings will be put to good use, as 5G phones can take up a little more energy than non-5G phones.
It’s important to note that the new display tech is only available on the Galaxy S21 Ultra — not the standard Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+. All three of the devices offer up to a 120Hz refresh rate. However, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 1,440p resolution(分辨率). And while the standard Galaxy S21 and S21+ have refresh rates that vary between 48Hz and 120Hz, the Galaxy S21 Ultra can go as low as 10Hz, which also helps save on energy consumption.
Samsung has been a leader in display tech for a long time, and it looks like that will continue well into the future. The company says that it holds 5,000 patents that involve the use of organic materials for displays. Hopefully, this new tech will be brought to lower-end phones over the next few years, or at least to the entire Galaxy S22 series next year.
12. What is the advantage of Samsung’s new tech?
A. It makes electrons flow faster and light brighter.
B. It requires an organic carbon-based material.
C. It makes the OLED display more functional.
D. It has a new ultra-low-power OLED display.
13. What makes the new display tech unique on the Galaxy S21 Ultra?
A. Changes that differ from other devices. B. High resolution and low refresh rate.
C. Standard modern equipment. D. Low energy consumption.
14. What can we infer about Samsung display tech from the last paragraph?
A. Its display of patents relates to organic materials.
B. It has just become the leader in display technology.
C. It will be used on low-end phones over the next few years.
D. It will definitely be used in the entire Galaxy S21 series next year.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Samsung has developed the most popular new phone.
B. The Galaxy S21 Ultra may have the best features up to now.
C. The difference among the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+.
D. Samsung’s new display tech makes the Galaxy S21 Ultra even more power efficient.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Sending children outside to play during the winter is one of the best things you can do for them. 16 It also gives parents a brief relief from the chaos.
17 Children between 12 months and 6 years of age should spend 60 and 90 minutes outdoors each day, children older than that should get an hour too, and babies should be taken out several times a day and exposed to the fresh outdoor air.
Successful winter play is closely tied to the way children are dressed. Unless outfitted properly, they will have a miserable time and ask to come back in within minutes of heading out. 18
Staying dry is crucial, so even if it’s not that cold out, put rain pants on a child to keep their legs dry and break the wind. Use boots that are high and waterproof. Choose heavy socks and a hat that are made of wool, as these take moisture away from a warm active body most effectively. Mittens(连指手套) are much warmer than gloves, and having a scarf or neck warmer makes a difference, too. 19 Make sure they have a good range of movement that allows them to play and keep active outside.
If you think it’s a lot of work getting them ready to go out, just wait till they come back in. 20 Everything has to be dry before the next outing. So don’t skip this step or you’ll have angry, cold children in a few hours’ time and a whole lot of regret on your part.
A. That’s when it gets really busy!
B. It gives them a space to consume energy.
C. Cotton does not do this and will leave feet feeling wet and cold.
D. Don’t overdress a child, though, because then they will get too sweaty.
E. National guidelines recommend lengths of outdoor exercise for children.
F. Don’t hesitate to cut the playtime short if your child is unhappy or cold outside.
G. It’s best to ensure they’re comfortable so they’ll stay out for a decent length of time.

What comes to mind when you think of kung fu? 36 your mind is filled with images of Shaolin monks or Bruce Lee, you wouldn’t be wrong. But for Laurence J. Brahm, an American documentary filmmaker, the first thing that springs to mind 37 (be) the concept of non-violence.
“Wushu, the official Chinese name for kung fu, 38 (translate) into ‘martial arts’ in English for a long time. Martial means military,” Brahm told a roomful of people 39 (attend) the premiere(首映式) of his latest work, Searching for Kung Fu.
As Brahm explained, if you break down the character “wu”, it consists of two 40 (character): one is “ge”, meaning dagger-axe; the other is “zhi”, meaning to stop. So, the meaning of martial arts in Chinese is not the “art of fighting”, a concept that many people take for granted. 41 the contrary, he said, kung fu is the art of stopping fighting, the art of non-violence.
In the movie, Brahm takes the audience on a kind of pilgrimage(朝圣), inviting them 42 (accompany) him as he travels to a host of 43 (historical) important locations in search of 44 origins of kung fu.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Several years ago I had loaned a girl I was seeing some cash as she needed some work done to her car. We eventually split up but remained friends. About a month after the split she sent me a card thanking me for helping out and repaid me, which I had never expected from her. The $250 she gave me was nice to have, but honestly was not needed, nor did I expect her to repay me.
About a week after I had been given this cash, I went on a late night food run at Denny’s with a friend, where I encountered a homeless man who was taking shelter from the less than pleasant weather we were having at the time. The homeless man who was sitting at a table next to us was told by the waitress that he couldn’t be there if he didn’t order anything. I overheard him ask how much a cup of coffee was, counted the few dollars he had in his pocket, and a little reluctantly (不情愿) ordered coffee so he could stay inside.
As I heard all of this, and thinking of the cash I had just received but didn’t need, I felt this might be someone I could help. So I engaged the man in some conversation, because I know most people who are homeless don’t get the benefit of casual conversation very often. I learned he was aged 45 and had previously worked as a tree trimmer (修剪工). Unfortunately about a year prior he fell while working and badly hurt his back and was no longer able to work until he got his back medically dealt with. After about 10 — 15 minutes of conversation I told him that if he felt comfortable accepting my offer, I would buy him whatever food off the menu he wanted. He resisted because he didn’t want to trouble me and put me out of money. I insisted he accept my offer because everyone deserves a warm meal. He eventually accepted and ordered something simple.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After paying the bills for the food, I pulled the $250 cash out of my wallet and folded it into my pocket. ___________________________________________________________________________

41. On 【解析】考查介词。on the contrary正相反,为固定短语。
42. to accompany【解析】考查非谓语动词。invite sb to do sth“邀请某人做某事”,为固定搭配。
43. historically【解析】考查词性转换。此处修饰形容词important,因此要用副词historically。
44. the 【解析】考查冠词。此处特指功夫的起源,因此要用定冠词the。
45. which 【解析】考查定语从句。which引导非限制性定语从句,充当主语,对前面的先行词the principles and values in this Chinese cultural legacy作进一步的解释。
