Airbnb is quickly becoming one of the biggest websites to book travel, which allows you to book a stay with individual hosts.
Benefits of booking a stay through Airbnb:
● Breakfast and snacks are often included in the price.
● You can arrange an early check-in or late check-out, space permitting, for NO extra charge.
● Many Airbnb places have a washer, full kitchen, and free internet.
● Travel with friends or family and stay together in one home.
● Stay in any part of town, NOT just where the chain hotels are located.
● Visit a unique destination where there are NO hotels.
● Meet lots of interesting people along the way!
Get a Better Price!
Because it's based on person-to-person interaction, you'll have lots of room to negotiate a better price.
1. Book Close to When You Want to Stay
Airbnb places get booked months in advance. Sometimes hosts find they have gaps to fill between stays, even up to the current day. In that case, the host might accept a lower offer. Send them a message and ask if there's a discount for booking the same week as your stay. Or even the same day!
2. Stay Longer
If you offer to stay a week or longer, some hosts are willing to offer discounts. That's because they won’t have to spend the costs of cleaning, laundry, and their time while you're staying.
3. Go in the Off-Season
Summer is the peak travel season for most of the US and Europe, especially if you're visiting a tourist destination. Hosts won't be as willing to negotiate because they know they can charge high rates. But if you want to stay between peak seasons, you might get a discount!
4. Offer Something in Return
Do you have a handy skill? Are you good at gardening, painting, or repairing things? Ask the host if they need help with changing light bulbs, fixing a leaky sink, or nailing down squeaky base boards. There are lots of ways that people can help each other. Where can you offer something in exchange for a discount?
1.Why do people like to book a stay through Airbnb?
A.Because it is one of the biggest websites.
B.Because the whole family can stay together.
C.Because people may check out later with extra money.
D.Because all the meals are often included in the price.
2.Which of the following may help save money?
A.Staying between peak travel seasons.
B.Offering to stay one or two days.
C.Refusing to fix a leaky sink.
D.Booking places months in advance.
3.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To recommend traveling in Airbnb.
B.To tell readers how to book through Airbnb.
C.To offer tips for booking through Airbnb.
D.To negotiate a better price via Airbnb.

This commercial kitchen in central London prepares one-and-a-half thousand meals a day. It provides catering for a museum and a conference centre. Kitchens like these typically throw away 20% of the ingredients they buy. Some are thrown away even though they are edible. And sometimes food ends up in the bin simply because it's not needed after all.
To stop this happening, this kitchen has been using a new piece of technology which can simply be connected to a normal bin on scales (磅秤). This is what’s known as a smart bin. Kitchen staff use it like a supermarket self-checkout. The idea is to keep an accurate digital record of the food being thrown out. This helps the head chef make more informed choices.
Bill Owen, head chef said, ''It was a shocker how many tons are actually saved through using this. '' By keeping an eye on exactly what kind of food is being thrown out, the chef can not only adjust his orders of ingredients, but also make whole new menus based on what was previously being thrown away. ''In an operation where you make a significant amount of your food in advance, you can typically cut food waste in half. '' Mark Zornes Winnow added.
Do people actually have time to sort the food as they are putting it into the bin? They do. To start with, take a little while to get used to the bin system. It is just about familiarizing yourself with where the buttons are.
However effective they may be, there is one important factor that holds these smart bins back. Andrew Stephen, CEO of Sustainable Restaurant Association, explained, ''Traditionally, smart bin technology has been at quite a high price point for particularly small operators. There is only a relatively small part that can afford that upfront implementation (安装启用). '' It seems that smart bins are just one part of the solution to the pressing problem of food waste.
4.What does the underlined word ''edible'' in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.awful B.unnecessary C.delicious D.eatable
5.The final aim of using smart bins is to ________.
A.change the menus B.make much food in advance
C.cut the food waste D.adjust the purchase of ingredients
6.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People need to sort the waste before putting them into the bin.
B.The bin is connected to a supermarket self-checkout.
C.The weight of the waste can't be known through the bin.
D.Andrew Stephen was optimistic about the future of the bin.
7.What's the disadvantage of the smart bins?
A.They can't keep an accurate record. B.They are too expensive.
C.They're too complicated to operate. D.They are not effective.

One day, the sewer line(污水管道)under my house burst. My first response was to call the plumber, but when he heard what had happened, he said he couldn’t help. “We don’t do that,” he said, as if to suggest that even plumbers have their dignity. He did, however, recommend someone. I made the call, expecting the man to complain at such a miserable job. Instead, he simply asked, “The address?”
2And that was it. An hour later, Steve arrived in his truck. I watched as he walked down into the damp depths. A few moments later he appeared, saying, “Yes. It’s broken.”
“Can you fix it?” I asked with a strange mixture of doubt and hope.
3Steve looked at me strangely as if rebuking my lack of faith, and then said, “Sure.” Then he told me that he had to get a backhoe(反铲挖土机)and dig up the street to the main sewer line.
I showed appropriate panic. “How long will all this take?”
“I should have it done by evening.”
4I didn’t want to watch the excavation(挖掘) of my property unfold. All I wanted was to leave, go somewhere, and, upon my return, have everything the way it was before the damage.
5I felt somewhat guilty upon driving off in my clean car, leaving Steve to such a disagreeable task. I went into town and visited a few friends. Eventually, around 6 p.m., my curiosity got the better of me. I went home, and a sweeter sight I never saw: a patch of newly-paved street and a covered-up excavation across my front garden. I opened the basement door and—all was tidy and relatively dry.
6I sat down on the back garden, lost in thought. I was taken by the very idea that, whatever crisis might happen to an unlucky homeowner, there is somebody, somewhere, who is practiced in its resolution. If that’s not reason for thankfulness, I’m not sure what is.
8.Why did the first plumber reject the author’s request?
A.He wanted to protect his dignity. B.He was inexperienced in the job.
C.He had another urgent task to do. D.He thought the job was unpleasant.
9.What does the underlined word “rebuking” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Admiring. B.Blaming.
C.Accepting. D.Neglecting.
10.What caused the author to feel upset?
A.The fear of Stevens refusal. B.The pressure of having to go out.
C.The difficulty of the repair work. D.The effects of the broken sewer line.
11.What was the author’s purpose of going into town?
A.To remove his negative emotions. B.To avoid doing the excavation work.
C.To visit a couple of friends. D.To satisfy his own curiosity.

Many science fiction stories tell about explorers arriving in a new world. The explorers then use some kind of high-tech device to test for breathable air or signs of life. But here on Earth, science fiction is becoming reality through a new sampling technology called environmental DNA, or eDNA for short. Scientists can use it to identify rare species or estimate fish populations with just a little air or water.
Environmental DNA can be used in two ways. One is to identify the creatures that live in a certain place. The other is to confirm the presence or lack of a specific creature.
Caren Goldberg is one of the first biologists to take the technology from the testing stage to actually using it. She sees eDNA as a way to get answers more efficiently and with less destruction compared to traditional survey techniques. Until recently, scientists depended on snorkeling ( 潜水), netting or using an electric current to temporarily catch fish.
This newer way to identify what lives in the environment is becoming popular around the world. Animal experts in Vietnam are using the eDNA to find the last, wild Yangtze giant softshell turtles. One researcher on the Caribbean island of Trinidad is using the sampling technology to find endangered golden treefrogs. In Madagascar, it is being used to identify amphibian(两栖动物)diseases.
Ms Goldberg has used eDNA testing to confirm the local extinction (灭绝) of a leopard frog in the American state of Idaho. She has also been asked to document the spread of the New Zealand mudsnail in the state of Washington. The creature has been found in lakes and other waterways across the state.
Scientists working with the technology say they do not expect robots to replace field biologists anytime soon. But the old-fashioned field work could soon be more targeted.
12.Compared to traditional survey techniques, eDNA is more______.
A.complex B.eco-friendly
C.dangerous D.convincing
13.By using eDNA, Caren Goldberg has______.
A.succeeded in catching many fishes
B.found the existence of golden treefrogs
C.documented the spread of softshell turtles
D.confirmed the disappearance of the leopard frog in Idaho
14.What can we infer from the last paragraph ?
A.Robots will replace scientists soon.
B.Some scientists are against using eDNA.
C.The old-fashioned field work may disappear.
D.Many biologists are unwilling to do the field work.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Science Fiction Becomes Reality for Species Surveys
B.Biologists Explore Space with the Help of eDNA
C.Scientists Found Methods to Test for Signs of Life
D.New Technologies Are Presented in Science Fictions
