It's almost 2 a.m. at Lightning in a Bottle, a music festival in Bradley, Calif. The last song of the night is the “Clean Up Song” by Mr. Nigel & Friends. Abruptly, heads bow and backs bend as people pick up empty cups, dirty forks, and festival guides, and drop them into cans.
“It works,” laughs Jesse Shannon, marketing director of Do LaB, the organization that hosts Lightning in a Bottle. “It reminds people in an interesting and cute way not to leave everything on the dance floor.” The “Clean Up Song” has been a tradition at Lightning in a Bottle since the beginning. It’s just one of the innovative ways music festivals are trying to lessen their impact on the environment.
Outdoor festivals have been called environmental disasters. A 2006 analysis conducted by Burning Man, the annual gathering in the northwestern Nevada desert, showed that the event produced 91 million pounds of carbon emissions(排放), or 1,400 pounds per person. These events literally produce tons of waste, anything from 60 tons at Lightning in a Bottle in 2015 to almost 550 tons at Bonnaroo in 2017.
Burning Man has a strong “Leave No Trace” policy. Lightning in a Bottle hosts talks from climate activists(积极分子). Outsides Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco has worked with Clean Vibes to responsibly manage its waste. In 2016, it diverted(使转向) 91 percent of all waste from landfill(垃圾填埋池) by encouraging recycling and reuse.
Festivals hope they can affect people’s attitudes and awareness instead of simply reducing their own environmental effects. “People at a festival are exploring an alternative way of living, and it’s a great opportunity to reassess your relationship to waste.” Mr. Shannon says. “People have been gathering for as long as there have been people,” Shannon says. “So it’s not something we are going to stop doing. It’s more what we can do to reduce the impacts of these gatherings and at the same time have a positive effect. We are confident we are helping people’s mind change. We still have a long way to go.”
    21. What is unique about Lightning in a Bottle?
    A. It lasts all night. B. It is song-themed.
    C. It makes people moved and bow. D. It is likely to benefit nature.
    22. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. “Leave No Trace” policy B. Lightning in a Bottle
    C. Outsides Lands Music and Arts Festival D. Clean Vibes
    23. What does Mr. Shannon’s attitudes towards the festivals mentioned above?
    A. neutral B. indifferent C. bright D. effortless

Fortune cookies, commonly served after meals at Chinese restaurants in the U.S., are characterized by a fortune, which is written on a small piece of paper tucked inside the cookie. There are several competing stories about the origin of the fortune cookie. None of them, however, has been proven to be entirely true.
One of these stories traces(追溯) the cookie’s origin back to 13th- and 14th-century China, which was then occupied by the Mongols. According to the legend(传说), notes of secrets plans for a revolution to overthrow the Mongols(蒙古人) were hidden in mooncakes that would ordinarily have been filled with sweet bean paste. The revolution turned out to be successful and eventually led to the formation of the Ming Dynasty. This story may sound highly credible, but there seems to be no solid evidence that it inspired the creation of the treats we know of today as fortune cookies.
Another account claims that David Jung, a Chinese immigrant living in Los Angeles, created the fortune cookie in 1918. Concerned about the poor people he saw wandering near his shop, he made cookies and passed them out free on the streets. Each cookie contained a strip of paper inside with an inspirational quotation on it.
However, the more generally accepted story is that the fortune cookie first turned up in either 1907 or 1914 in San Francisco, created by a Japanese immigrant, Makoto Hagiwara. The fortune cookie was based on a Japanese snack, but Hagiwara sweetened the recipe to appeal to American tastes. He put thank-you notes in the cookies and served them to his guests with tea. Within a few years, Chinese restaurant owners in San Francisco had copied the recipe and replaced the thank-you notes with fortune notes. Such fortune cookies became common in Chinese restaurants in the U.S. after World War II.
    24. What did the second and third legends have in common?
    A. The fortune cookies were made to help the poor. B. The fortune cookies were made by immigrants.
    C. The fortune cookies were totally Chinese. D. The fortune cookies became popular World War II.
    25. Which word can replace the underlined word “overthrow” in Paragraph 2?
    A. defeat B. help C. evolve D. expand
    26. Which of the following statements about the first legend is NOT RIGHT?
    A. Mongols dominated from 1300 to 1400 in China.
    B. The revolution witnessed the arrival of the Ming Dynasty.
    C. It seems that no specific evidence can be found to prove the legend.
    D. It is one of the half false stories about the fortune cookie.
    27. What is the main idea about article?
    A. The fortune cookie are gaining more and more popularity after World War II.
    B. There are various stories about the fortune cookie after it appeared.
    C. Some interesting legends about the origin of the fortune cookie.
    D. The stories between the fortune cookie and the human beings.

Raynor Winn and her husband Moth became homeless owing to their wrong investment. Their savings had been used up to pay the debts. What’s worse, Moth was diagnosed with a severe disease. There was no cure, only anodyne(止痛药). Failing to find any other way out, Moth decided to make a walking journey to make the best of his last life with his wife.
This was a long journey of unaccustomed hardship and surprising recovery. When leaving home, Raynor and Moth had just £320 in the bank. They planned to keep the budget low by living on boiled noodles, with few better treats.
Wild camping is illegal in England. To avoid being caught, the Winns had to get their tent up late and packed it away early in the morning. The Winns soon discovered that daily hiking in their 50s is a lot tougher than they remember it was in their 20s. Raynor ached all over and desired a bath. Moth, meanwhile, after an initial struggle, found his symptoms were strangely relieved by their daily tiring journey.
Finally, the couple found that their bodies turned for the better, with re-found strong muscles. “Our hair was fried and falling out, nails broken, clothes worn to a thread, but we were alive.” During the journey, Raynor began a career as a writer. She writes, “Homelessness had taken every material(物质上的) thing from me and left me torn bare, an empty page at the end of a partly written book. It had also given me a choice, either to leave that page blank or to keep writing the story with hope. I chose hope and I anticipate that a brilliant future is around the corner.”

Have you noticed how certain topics bring you a variety of emotions? 31 Some might make you angry or envious. Guilty or sad. Many times, these feelings of anger, sadness or envy, can lead to a strong feeling of shame. In Brené Brown’s latest book, Dare to Lead, she mentions “wherever perfectionism is driving us, shame is riding shotgun(坐在车的前排座位上).” 32
An emotional trigger(情绪触发) is any theme or topic that makes us feel uncomfortable. It can vary in each person because we are all struggling with something different.
33 It’s extremely hard to distance ourselves from our emotions and think clearly. But we should keep two things in mind:
◆ 34 The friend who is hitting that emotional scar(伤痕) might be unaware of the pain you’re experiencing. And while you might not feel comfortable enough to talk about this with them, it’s important to keep a fresh attitude towards their emotions. When it’s someone who truly loves us and cares about us, their comments are seldom ill-intentioned(恶意的). And if you feel they could be doing a better job, tell them in a loving way.
◆Our own pain. It’s essential for us to understand what caused our pain. And we mustn’t run away from these feelings, but keep away from the shame and completely own them. 35
    A. The other people’s intention.
    B. Maybe mainly unpleasant ones.
    C. Tell them what you think about them.
    D. And many of these emotional triggers arise from perfectionism.
    E. Therefore, we should try our best to learn new ways to control them before they control us.
    F. You’re supposed to get rid of the emotional triggers, which truly confused us.
    G. When we discover what bothers us, we can take action to protect our mental health.

Scientists have created a toddler robot(幼儿机器人) 56 helped to discover that young children learn new words using the same method as machines. This suggests that early learning is based not 57 conscious thought but on 58 automatic ability to associate objects which enables babies to quickly make sense of their environment, researchers said.
Researchers from Sussex University and Lancaster University in the UK wanted 59 (find) out how young children learn new words for the first time. They programmed a humanoid robot 60 (call) iCub designed to have similar proportions(比例) to a three year old child, using simple software which enabled the robot to hear words through a microphone and see with a camera.
It 61 (train) to point at new objects to 62 (identity) them in order to solve the mystery of how young children learn new words. Researchers found that the robot learned in exactly the same way 63 shown several familiar 64 (toy) and one brand new toy.
“This suggests that at least some aspects of early learning are based on an astonishingly powerful association making ability which allows babies and toddlers to rapidly absorb information from the very 65 (complicate) learning environment,” he said.

    第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
    How to Go About It?
The old saying, “Find a penny, pick it up, and all day long you’ll have good luck”, might be a good idea for one looking to adopt coin collecting as a hobby. Anyone can start coin collecting. It’s easy and fun to start collecting on your own. You can begin simply, with just the coins in your pocket. And from there, your hobby will grow into a lifelong hobby with a little diligence, perseverance, discipline and patience. Coin collecting is both educational and informative.
For kids of your age, all you need is an interest in coins, a sharp eye, and a box to put them in. You can look in your pocket change, at department stores, at flea(跳蚤) markets, in penny dishes or in the cheap boxes at coin shops. Don’t worry about whether it’s worth anything—just start with whatever strikes your fancy(爱好). If you want to take special care of your coins so that they don’t get scratched(有抓痕的), you can put each one in a small paper envelope before you put it in a box.
The first you will need to do is to visit your local hobby shop. There you can purchase a magnifying glass(放大镜), some coins, and some coin storage(存储) materials.
Once you have collected a good number of coins, you will need to decide the type of your collection and the choices can be confusing and endless. You can collect them separately, or buy pre-collected sets of(几套) Lincoln pennies(便士), Mercury dimes(硬币), coins from foreign lands, and so on, to start your collection. Maybe you want to just collect coins from a certain time period that interest you.Whatever your decision, stick with it and work to complete your collection.
You can add to your collection by visiting coin shows or trading with family and friends who might share interest with you.
The final step is to get out there, enjoy the hobby and pull together the most amazing collection of coins ever gathered.

    应用文写作:
    Dear Lucy,
I’m very glad to hear from you. Learning that you will go to the birthday party of a Chinese grandpa, I’d like to give some advice.
First, you should arrive there before the due time. Besides, it’s a tradition for us to give “shouli”, such as clothes, birthday noodles, and peaches, to “the old God of longevity”. For the dressing, you’d better wear clothes with bright colors, which symbolize joy. What’s more, you should prepare some blessing words to the grandpa when you propose a toast to him.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful for you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

M: OK. But I still want to go to the bookstore before the film starts. There is a sale and I’d like to get a book.

W: I want a ticket to New York. One way, please.
M: That’ll be $285. How would you like to pay?[来源:学科网ZXXK]
W: Credit card. I don’t like to pay in cash, because it’s quite inconvenient.
    M: OK, I see.
W: Oh, by the way, my doctor advised me not to eat any meat. Last time, I had a special salad plate. I’d like to have it again this time.
M: I’m sorry. I’m not able to do that. Otherwise, we would need 24 hours’ notice for special meals. Here is your ticket.
W: Thank you! Oh, my! I forgot to bring my credit card. Let me see. Oh, fortunately there is enough cash in my wallet.

W: Hello, may I help you?
M: Well, my winter vacation is coming up in a few days and I want to take a trip with my wife.
W: Do you want to go abroad?
M: Yeah, I’d like to go to a foreign country. My wife wants to go to any place sunny. We won’t visit Africa, though.
W: How much money would you like to spend on the trip?
M: It’d better not be more than $3,000.
W: I think sunny Florida is a good choice.
M: Florida is not exactly our idea of a great vacation. What about some place a little different where few tourists go?
W: Then how about Spain or Portugal? Both are sunny and quite relaxing.
M: Spain seems better. I’ll talk to my wife about it and then return.

W: So is there any other area I should look at as well?
M: Yes, I’d recommend West Derby. It will be closer to your office.
    W: That sounds good.
M: Yes, and if you have children, it also has very good schools.
W: That’s not my concern. I live on my own so I’m only looking for a cheap, single room. Something like a flat.
M: Hmm, that may be a problem here in this area then because there are mostly larger houses here. You’d probably be able to share one with other people who want to rent, though.
W: No, I’m only interested in flats at the moment.
M: We actually have another office in South Derby, and the guy who works there is a really good friend of mine. His name is John Godfrey.
W: Could you tell me his telephone number?
    M: It’s 0742 63951.
W: Great! Is there a good time to call him? I’m here for a whole week until Sunday, 10th.
M: I’m sure he’ll be able to see you on Saturday.
W: That sounds fine. Thanks for your help.
    Text 10
W: Oymyakon, in East Russia, is extremely cold. Extremely low temperatures are frequent in Oymyakon, with temperatures going below minus 45oC regularly. Winters are long and cold and often last at least nine months. The summers are much warmer than the winters. Temperatures can rise to 35oC! but then there is the problem of mosquitoes ...
About 2,300 people live in Oymyakon. Life is very much the same as 100 years ago — apart from television. For example, there are no indoor bathrooms and people use ice instead of water from the tap. The valley used to be famous because some of the oldest people in the country lived there. Fiodor Arnsow, Oymyakon’s oldest-ever local people, died in 1967. He was 109. There are about 300 children in the local school. Up until recently, there didn’t use to be any heating in the school. The children did their classes in their coats. These young people dream of having mobile phones, an Internet café and a disco with a CD player that works.
A local businessman, Alexander Krylov, built the town’s first hotel to attract the tourists to the area. Each of the ten rooms has hot and cold water. The most famous visitor until now is the Hollywood actor Ewan McGregor, who visited this place—in summer of course—on the back of a motorbike.
