As we know, Children's Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in different countries of the world and at different dates every year. Now we have done a little research about the histories of the most commonly observed "Children's Day" across the world.
    Universal Children's Day
Universal Children's Day is observed every year on the 20th of November. In 1954, to protect children from having to work long hours in unsafe conditions ; allowing all children to have access to learning ; and to work for many other rights for children, the UN General Assembly recommended that all countries should establish a Universal Children's Day on a proper day. It was formally started for celebration from November 20, 1959.
    International Children's Day
International Children's Day is said to have originated in Turkey in 1920. At the beginning, it was celebrated every year on the second Sunday in December. It was a day when special programmes were broadcast for kids. Later, a World Conference for the Well Being of Children was held in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. After the conference, governments around the world decided to specify a day as Children's Day to draw attention to children's issues. Many countries, including China, chose June 1. And from that time, International Children's Day is celebrated on the 1st of June each year.
    World Children's Day
World Children's Day is always annually observed on the 20th of November. This is a day McDonald's uses as a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities. It was on November 20th, 2002, when World Children's Day was first held officially. The occasion is celebrated every year in honour of children of the world and also as an annual global fundraiser to benefit branches of Ronald McDonald House Charities around the world. Today, World Children's Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries.

Gossip is people on the street always talk about other people and it is the worst thing. It is described as a uthree-pronged (三面的)tongue” that kills three people: the teller, the listener, and the person being gossiped about. Although gossip is a bad behaviour, it is good to a healthy body, according to a research.
Despite gossip's ill reputation, researchers found that surprisingly small share of it — as little as 3 to 4 percent — actually means harm. And even that part can bring people together. If two people share negative feelings about a third person, they are likely to feel closer to each other than they would if they both felt positively about him or her.
Gossip may even make us better people. A team of Dutch researchers reported that hearing gossip about others made research subjects more reflective. Positive gossip inspired self-improvement efforts, and negative gossip made people prouder of themselves. In another study, the worse participants felt upon hearing a piece of negative gossip, the more likely they were to say they had learned a lesson from it.
The most positive assessment (评定)of gossip comes from the psychologist Robin Dunbar. In Dunbar's account, our primate ancestors used to unite by scratching the back and brushing the fur for each other. That ensured cooperative self-defense against attack by enemies. But as humans grew more intelligent and more social, their groups became too large to unite by back-scratching alone. That's where language, or gossip, stepped in. Dunbar argues that casual chatter with and about others gave early humans a sense of shared identity and helped them grow more aware of their environment. That would contribute to a more complex civilization.
So the next time you are to dish th。dirt, fear not. You may actually be promoting cooperation, helping others' self-esteem, and making people behave well.
    24. The author writes Paragraph 1 to .
    A. explain the definition of gossip
    B. introduce the topic to be discussed
    C. summarize the bad effect of gossip
    D. provide the background information
    25. What can we know about gossip according to the researchers?
    A. Most of it does no harm.
    B. It blocks self-improvement.
    C. It's usually thought poorly of.
    D. It exists before languages appear.
    26. Gossip could unite larger groups of early humans by .
    A. keeping their back-scratching defense
    B. making them more intelligent and social
    C. promoting their abilities to learn a lesson
    D. developing their sense of the same identity
    27. What do the words "dish the dirt" in the last paragraph probably mean?
    A. Hate gossip. B. Hear gossip. C. Exchange gossip. D. Clear gossip.
    C
Do you like modem inventions? Nowadays, modem inventions have speeded up people's lives amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in little more than an hour, aircrafts cross the world inside a day, while computers operate at lightning speed. Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending. Every year, motor-cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boasts (吹嘘)of saving precious seconds in handling tasks.
All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so. We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our bodies feel that they have been left behind on another time zone. Again, spending too long at computers results in painful wrists and fingers. Mobile phones also have their dangers, because too much use may transmit harmful radiation into our brains, a consequence we do not like to think about.
However, what do we do with the time we have saved? Certainly not relax. We are so accustomed to constant activities that we find it difficult to sit and do nothing. Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen quietly to a story on the radio, letting imagination takes us into another world.

There was a time when some people's lives were devoted simply to the cultivation of the land or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking there; their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. Sometimes, we envy that sort of life. Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard tasks our ancestors faced: they farmed with bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and had to make tools from wood and stones. Modem machinery has freed people from that primitive existence.
    28. The new products become more and more time-saving because .
    A. our love of speed seems never-ending
    B. time is limited
    C. the prices are increasingly high
    D. the manufactures boast a lot
    29. What does "the days" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Imaginary life. B, Simple life in the past.
    C. Times of inventions. D. Time for constant activities.
    30. What is the author's attitude towards the modem technology?
    A, Critical. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Negative.
    31. What does the passage mainly discuss?
    A. The present and past times.
    B. Machinery and human beings.
    C. Imaginations and inventions.
    D. Modem technology and its influence.
    D
When it comes to shopping, for some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and our money. For me, it's something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness for the Internet! It's more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even food, and the comfortable sofa. But that's not the only reason: price is an important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is that you don't know what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called “showrooming".
Showrooming is something Fve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price. I'm not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 45% of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2019.
Amy Cashman, head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit are that “ people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying". She explains that consumers are not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their smartphones to shop around.
But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving in-store discounts or free gifts.
We mustn't forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare (售后月艮务).It's good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen. But at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!
    32. What does "showrooming” mean in the text?
    A. Trying in shops and buying online. B. Showing products in a room.
    C. Buying something in a store. D. Shopping on the Internet.
    33. Why do people start showrooming?
    A. They don't know what to buy. B. They like buying in a shop.
    C. They want to compare different opinions. D. They can get good aftercare.
    34. According to Amy Cashman, which is NOT the reason for showrooming?
    A. The lack of time. B. The comfort of the sofa.
    C. The shortness of money. D. The security of the product.
    35. What's the main idea of the last paragraph?
    A. The advantages of in-store shopping.
    B. The advantages of shopping online.
    C. The advantages of showrooming.
    D. The advangtages of different shopping styles.

    41.B 根据本空后的“water to the runners”可知,“我”的工作是为跑步者发(pass out)水。
42.A 根据本空后的“to see all the different kinds of people who passed by and grabbed a cup of water.”
    43.C 根据本空前的“I thought maybe I could do it too!”
    44.D 根据本空所在的“That first 10,000m race was quite an 44 .”
    45.A 根据本空后的“I didn’t know if I could finish.”
    46.C 根据本空后的“At one point near the end,a 70-year-old man ran past me,very,very fast.”
    47.A 根据本空后的“because I was 50 years younger than he but I couldn’t even keep up with him.”
    48.B 根据本空前的“I couldn’t even keep up with him”可知,“我”有一种挫败(defeated)感。
    49.A 根据本空所在的“But then I 49 something.He was running his race and I was running mine.”
50.D 根据本空前的“He was running his race and I was running mine.”
    51.C 根据本空前的“training and goals for himself”可知,“我”要做的是完成自己的目标(goal)。
    52.B 根据本空所在的“it 52 me that this was a lesson I could draw from.”
53.C 根据本所在的“I learned something about myself in that moment.I turned my embarrassment into 53 .”
54.C 根据本空后的“that I would not give up on running races”可知,“我”决定(decided)不放弃。

set out to do“打算/计划做”为固定用法。

    Text 10
Red foxes live around the world in many places, including forests, mountains, and deserts. They also adapt well to human environments such as farms, suburban areas, and even large communities. This has earned it a reputation for intelligence. They are hunted for sport, but not widely.
Red foxes are good hunters who feed on rabbits, birds and other small game animals, but their diet can be flexible. They also eat fruit and vegetables, fish, frogs and even worms.
The fox’s thick tail aids its balance, but it has other uses as well.A fox uses its tail as a warm cover in cold weather and as a signal flag to communicate with other foxes.Foxes also signal each other by leaving their smells on trees and rocks.
The female typically gives birth to two to twelve babies. At birth, red foxes are actually brown or gray.A new red coat usually grows in by the end of the first month, but some red foxes are golden,reddish-brown,silver,or even black. Both parents care for their young through the summer before they are able to live on their own in the fall.
