Is going on holiday of any benefit? New research shows that going on holiday makes you not only feel good while you’re there but also gain the health benefits for months.
Jetting off to destinations such as the Maldives cuts your blood pressure, helps you sleep better and bounce back from stress. The benefits last at least a fortnight longer than the vacation and can be felt for months in some cases where it is claimed. Experts say workers should always take their holiday entitlement (权利) each year, but as ‘many as one in three don’t.
The study compared key health markers in holidaymakers visiting Thailand, Peru or the Maldives, with those in people who stayed at home and continued working. The average blood pressure of those on holiday dropped by six percent while the workers saw their blood pressure rise by two percent over the same period. The sleep quality of holidaymakers improved by 17 percent while that of the non—holidaymakers deteriorated by 14 percent.
The study also found the ability of vacationers to recover from stress, known as the stress-resilience test, improved by 29 percent. There was a 71 percent fall in stress-resilience scores among workers. Tests showed fallen blood glucose (葡萄糖) levels, reduced risk of diabetes (糖尿病), trimmer waistlines and improved mood and energy levels, with the effects sustained for at least two weeks after returning home.
The Holiday Health Experiment was conducted by tour operator Kuoni and Nuffield Health, the UK’s largest healthcare charity.

From a college designed specifically for high school students to one that doesn’t provide students with grades, here are some of the country’s most unique institutions.
    ●Berea College, Berea, Kentucky
The first interracial, co-educational college in the South, Berea specializes in attracting students who may be otherwise unable to afford a college education. Berea students come from families with an average household income of $30,000, which is why the school’s financial aid program is so important.
●Deep Springs College, Deep Springs, California
Deep Springs, formerly an all-male school, has one of the smallest student bodies in the country at 26. The college accepts only 10% of its applicants, and maintains its own cattle herd. Students enjoy the school’s isolated location — 45 miles away from the nearest established town. Electricity is produced mainly through solar power, and the college sometimes even sells electricity to Pacific Gas & Electric.
●The Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington
At Evergreen, students don’t receive traditional letter grades. Instead, professors issue narrative (叙述的) evaluations of students’ work at the end of each term. The curriculum is structured around the "Coordinated Studies Program", which focuses on providing students with a well-rounded education across a number of different areas. The college sits on 1,000 breathtaking acres, a portion of it on Puget Sound.
    ●Hampshire College, Amherst, Massachusetts
Considered an "experimenting" college because of its constantly changing curriculum, Hampshire College doesn’t feature a traditional grading system. Instead, the school requires students to complete three different divisions, which feature different classes. Once the project is completed, it’s not given a grade, but a written evaluation, as other projects students complete throughout their time at Hampshire are.
25.Which of the following suits students from families with a lower income?
    A. The Evergreen State College. B. Deep Springs College.
    C. Hampshire College. D. Berea College.
26.What can we learn about The Evergreen State College?
    A. It attaches great value to students’ different kinds of knowledge.
    B. It’s most famous for its outstanding teaching quality.
    C. It only provides examination scores for students.
    D. It focuses on students’ hands-on experience.
27.How are the students judged in Hampshire College?
    A. By receiving traditional letter grades.
    B. By using a computer examination grading system
    C. By evaluating their performance of three divisions.
    D. By checking if they can design financial aid programs.
    C
Being less than perfectly well-dressed in a business setting can result in a feeling of great discomfort that may well require treatment to eliminate. And the sad truth is that “clothing mismatches” on the job can ruin the day of the person who is wearing the inappropriate attire(着装)—and the people with whom he or she comes in contact.
Offices vary when it comes to dress codes. Some businesses have very high standards for their employees and set strict guidelines for office attire, while others maintain a more relaxed attitude. However, it is always important to remember that no matter what your company’s attitude is regarding what you wear, you are working in a business environment and you should dress properly. Certain items may be more appropriate for evening wear than for a business meeting, just as shorts and a T-shirt are better suited for the beach than for an office environment. Your attire should reflect both your environment and your position. A senior vice president has a different image to maintain than that of a secretary or sales assistant. Like it or not, you will be judged by your personal appearance.
This is never more apparent than on “dress-down days”, when what you wear can say more about you than any business suit ever could. In fact, people will pay more attention to what you wear on dress-down days than on “business professional ” days. Thus, when dressing in “business casual” clothes, try to put some good taste into your wardrobe choices, recognize that the “real” definition of business casual is to dress just one notch(等级) down from what you would normally wear of business-professional attire days.
Remember, there are borders between your career and our social life. You should dress one way for play and another way when you mean business. Always ask yourself where you are going and how other people will be dressed when you get there. Is the final destination the opera, the beach, or the office? Dress properly and you will discover the truth in the principle that clothes make the man—and the woman. When in doubt, always misjudge on the side of dressing slightly more traditionally than the situation demands.
28.What is the passage mainly about?
    A. How to dress properly in a business setting.
    B. A president of a company should dress differently from a secretary or sales assistant.
    C. The differences between professional and casual dress.
    D. Improper dress will make a person feel uncomfortable.
29.Which of the following statements is true?
    A. Every company has strict rules regarding office dress.
    B. You can wear whatever you like if your company doesn’t have standards for dressing.
    C. You should dress according to the business setting even when there are no fixed rules.
    D. In companies with relaxed rules on office dress, you can’t spot a manager among others.
30.Which statement best describes “dress-down days”?
    A. We can’t judge a person’s taste by his clothes on dress-down days.
    B. People’s clothes on dress-down days don’t receive much attention.
    C. On dress-down days, you can wear whatever you like.
    D. People are usually more careful about what they wear on dress-down days than on other occasions.
31.Which of the following is NOT the rule in the passage with regard to business dress?
    A. For a business meeting and a concert, you should dress differently.
    B. Remember to ask others for advice when you are not sure about what to dress.
    C. Think about how other guests will wear if you are invited to a dinner.
    D. Dress a bit traditionally if you are not sure about proper dress for a certain occasion.
    D
A Dutch artist and designer has come up with a device which he hopes will get rid of pollutants from Beijing's smog skies, creating clean air for the city's mask-wearing people.
An electromagnetic field(电磁场) will pull particles(微粒) in the smog to the ground where they can be easily cleaned.
“It's like when you have a balloon which has static(静电) and your hair goes toward it. Same with the smog,” says artist Daan Roosegaarde.
His studio has reached an agreement with the Beijing government to test the technology in one of tile capital's parks.
With its skies regularly covered by dirty gray smog, Beijing this week announced a series of emergency measures to handle the problem.
Roosegaarde says an indoor model device has already proven it works and is confident that the results — with the help of a team of scientists and engineers — can be replicated outside.
“Beijing is quite a good place because the smog in Beijing is quite low. It lies in a valley so there's not so much wind. It's a good environment to explore this kind of thing.”
“We'll be able to purify the air and the challenge is to get the top of the smog so you can see the sun again.”
Roosegaarde acknowledges that projects like this are a way of drawing attention to the problem, rather than a practical solution to Beijing's awful air pollution.
“This is not the real answer for smog. The real answer has to do with clean cars, different industry and different lifestyles.”
However, he hopes the project will make a “fundamental statement” by allowing the city's people to realize the difference between breathing clean and smog-filled air.
    32.The device works by _______.
    A. helping keep the particles out with more masks
    B. pulling pollutants to the ground with an electromagnetic field
    C. absorbing hair with a balloon with static
    D. creating clean air and let it out into the sky
    33.According to the passage, ______ .
    A. the Beijing government has agreed to use the technology in Beijing
    B. they have proven the results of the device both indoors and outdoors
    C. the results of the air-cleaning device can be expectable
    D. the Beijing government has never done anything to handle the air pollution
34.What does Roosegaarde really mean by saying “Beijing is quite a good place…... ”?
    A. The air pollution in Beijing is not quite serious.
    B. The weather in Beijing is good for foreigners to live in.
    C. Beijing is quite fit for using the air-cleaning device.
    D. It is easy to get the top of the smog in Beijing.
35.Roosegaarde appeals to people in Beijing to ________.
    A. pay attention to air pollution and solve the problem finally
    B. invent more devices to clean the smog in Beijing
    C. drive modern cars and try different lifestyles
    D. realize how serious the pollution they're facing is
