Hello, I’m Jan from Mrs. Lake’s class. My class wants to work together to help the public.
We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month we did a class project on the highways near our own. We learned about the Adopt -a -Highway Program. This program brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We think it would be a great idea for all students in our school to join the program and adopt a highway.
Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the
highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road clean.
The Adopt-a-Highway Program is a great way to help their environment look nicer. Also, the
government does not have to send out as many road workers. This saves money. Finally, people may try harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenagers like us, cleaning them up.
We will need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs Lake’s room on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. At the meeting, we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people’s unkind acts. Then we’ll try to pick an area to adopt and clean.
    24. What is the Adopt-a-Highway Program about?
    A. Giving names to the highways. B. Drawing pictures of highways.
    C. Picking up litter along the roads. D. Putting up signs near the roads.
    25. What should the students do first if they want to join the program?
    A. Pick a spot to care for. B. Call Mrs. Lake next week.
    C. Write a letter to their parents. D. Go to a meeting on Wednesday.
    26. What is the purpose of this speech?
    A. To encourage students to join the program. B. To introduce the traffic system.
    C. To show drivers how to run the program. D. To tell a story about adopting a pet.
    27. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
    A. Adopt–a–Pet B. Adopt-a-Highway
    C. Ways to Protect the Environment D. Volunteers on Roads

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) isn’t supported by most Westerners. However, this is starting to change.
TCM will be included in the new version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD),
which will be published by the World Health Organization in 2019, Nature magazine reported.
This is the first time for TCM to be included in the ICD, which serves as “the international
standard for diseases and health conditions,” according to China Daily.
Ryan Abbott at the Center for Eas t-West Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, US, said this could benefit TCM.
The inclusion of TCM in the ICD “is a mainstream acceptance that will have significant
impact around the world.” Abbott told Nature.
TCM has been some growth in other countries, with a number of famous people being known to use it. For example, during the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, US swimmer Michael Phelps was seen with circular bruises on his body. Such bruises are caused by cupping(拔火罐), a traditional Chinese medicinal practice that has been around for more than 2,000 years.
In 2015, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
for her discovery of artemisinin (青蒿素),a drug that can cure malaria (疟疾). She said she was inspired by traditional Chinese medicine.
China has made some efforts to promote TCM overseas. Twenty-six TCM centers were set up over three years, according to a 2017 report published by Xinhua News Agency.
TCM still faces many challenges, such as a lack of clinical evidence as to precisely how it works, according to China Daily.
Some say that TCM methodology should be combined with modern scientific methods to make it more acceptable to people outside of China.
“Tried and tested over thousands of years, the effectiveness of TCM is clear,” Lu Chuanjian,
vice-president of the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, told China Daily.
“Now we need to use modern technology and ways of thinking to explain to the world how TCM works on specific diseases and to prove that it can cure diseases,” Lu added.
    28. What do we know about TCM?
    A. Hundreds of TCM centers have opened overseas in recent years.
    B. Chinese scientists have found many ways to prove that it works.
    C. It is not widely accepted in Western countries.
    D. TCM has inspired many Nobel Prize winners.
    29. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. The global health trend. B. The application of modern technology. C. Westerners’ positive view on TCM. D. TCM’s inclusion in the ICD.
    30. Why did the author mention Phelps’ example? To .
    A. explain what TCM can be used to B. show cupping is very important in TCM
    C. show TCM is gaining popularity in some countries D. prove the effectiveness of TCM
    31. What does Lu suggest to make TCM more acceptable overseas?
    A. Inviting foreign celebrities to try it. B. Combining it with modern technology.
    C. Setting up TCM hospitals outside of China. D. Providing more TCM classes overseas.

Of course, she wasn’t really my aunt and, out of fear, I never called her that to her face. I
only referred to her as “My Aunt Fannie” because the name always made my father laugh quietly and gave my mother cause to look strictly at both of us at me for being disrespectful of my elder and at my father for encouraging my bad behavior. I enjoyed both reactions, so I looked for every opportunity to work for the name as many as possible.
As a young woman, my mother had worked in the kitchen of a large Victorian farmhouse. During those years my mother helped Aunt Fannie make the best blueberry jam ever tasted by anyone in Glen field. She was well known for her jam and for never sharing the recipe with others. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, as long as Aunt Fannie was alive, she never made the jam without Aunt Fannie in our kitchen to direct the process and preserve the secret.
Each August, my mother would prepare me for Aunt Fannie’s visit. One year, after I had helped with the jam process, Aunt Fannie gave me a coin and then made me promise that I would never spend it. “Hold onto this coin,” she said, “and someday you will be rich. I still have my very first coin, given to me by my grandmother.” So I kept the coin in a small box and waited to become rich.
I now have the blueberry jam recipe and the coin from Aunt Fannie. In people’s eyes Aunt
Fannie’s success resulted from that secret recipe. But to me, it was just a common recipe. Nor
has it significantly made me become a rich person. But I keep them as reminders to hold onto the valuable things in life. Money can make you feel rich for a while, but it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave you wealthy. And that is a fortune which anyone can build.
    32. For what reason did the author always use the name “My Aunt Fannie” in conversation?
    A. To enjoy her parents’ reactions. B. To ask for Aunt Fannie’s Blueberry jam.
    C. To attract people’s attention. D. To make fun of Aunt Fannie.
    33. What is important in the author’s eyes?
    A. The coin from Aunt Fannie. B. Blueberry jam recipe.
    C. The key to success. D. The memories of time spent with family.
    34. Why did the author’s mother keep the recipe as a secret? Because she .
    A. greatly respected Aunt Fannie B. was frightened of Aunt Fannie
    C. didn’t know how to make it D. didn’t like the taste of the jam
    35. In the last paragraph, the author encourages readers to .
    A. hold onto the first coin in life B. spend more time with family and friends
    C. make money with their own hands D. make as many as friends as possible

Anyone can try to lead a group, but not many individual is cut out for leadership. The better leaders possess a few qualities that can mean the difference between success and failure of the group. These are the qualities the leader of higher rank will look for when choosing a leader for a group, or when evaluating the performance of a leader. 36
    Take Responsibility
Group leaders might share tasks around a group as necessary. 37 That means that if things go wrong in a group project, he is the one who must accept the consequences and work out what mistakes were made. The group leader won’t always have the

    Concern for Members
The group leader has a commitment to the task or project at hand.
38 This means getting to know the strengths, weaknesses and goals of team members, as well
as making time to build the group through collective activities. The group leader should make sure
that every member is new to a group.
39 The group leader needs to be able to listen to the suggestions, complaints and ideas of group members. Not only will this allow complaints to be addressed and potentially suitable ideas to be put into practice, but a leader who listens will also encourage group members to share their concerns and thoughts. 40
    A. But more importantly, he has a concern for each and every person who is part of his group.
