John Low, a 60-year-old Singaporean diving instructor, spent four days and three nights floating in the South China 
Sea after his boat was turned over last month.
On May 4th, John Low was getting ready for a dive off the coast of Tioman Island, in the South China Sea, when a 
strong wave hit his boat and threw him into the water. Before he could even realize what had happened, the boat 
started taking water and eventually sank. All John could retrieve  was a ring buoy(救生圈） and his backpack, but he 
wasn’t too worried at first, as he figured he could swim his way  back to land. However, try as he might, he couldn’t fight the currents(洋流）, which constantly pushed him out into the open sea. By 10pm,he could no longer see the shore, and he stared panicking. For the next four days, he was  all alone, with no food and drinking water.
 “If you you’re your head up, out in the pen , you get burnt , which means a burning feeling on your face ,”Low said
in an interview.”The only way to avoid that is to put your face in the water.  But because my face is all scarred, for I had been in the water for four days and three nights, so it’s either I face the pain  in the sun or the pain in the water. Though the physical  torture(折磨）and mental torture of being by myself with nothing but salt water continued increasing, 
I hung on and stood the pain, not for myself but for my family."
On the fourth night of his experience, a passing ship called the Diogo Cao noticed the buoy and lifted it. He nearly
 lost his consciousness(意识）. All he could remember from his rescue was thinking "I am saved, now I can sleep". 
Luckily, he has made a full recovery after two days in hospital and recently met the crew of the Diogo Cao to thank them for saving his life.

Researchers at the University of Maryland have re-designed the material to make it entirely not affected to light, 
while only absorbing the slightest levels of light. Rather than absorbing sunlight, the new wood could bounce it right 
back into the environment. In effect,homes made from this material would be able to prevent almost all heat from going indoors potentially easing our reliance on air conditioning in summer months.
"Reducing human dependence on energy-inefficient cooling methods such as air conditioning would have a large 
effect on the global energy landscape(观）,"the researchers note in the study. To make that kind of "cooling" wood, 
scientists used hydrogen peroxide to get rid of the lignin(木质素）,a support part in the cell walls of trees.
What’s more, the lignin-free wood allows heat produced indoors to escape. That’s ecause indoor heat occupies a 
slightly different wavelength than your garden variety sunlight-a wavelength that doesn’t get repulsed(排斥） by the 
new wood. So by day, the sun’s heat is kept, and at night, indoor heat enters the environment, although the team 
admits this could be a problem when it comes to actually keeping heat indoors.
What else can be known about wood made entirely of cellulose(纤维素）? It’s unbelievably strong. The University 
of Maryland team claims the new wood packs an extendable strength of around 404 megapascals(兆帕）, or more than 
eight times that of natural wood. That uts it somewhere in the neighborhood of steel.
"Wood has been used for thousands of years and has appeared as an important sustainable(可持续性的）building 
material to potentially replace steel and concrete because of its economic and environmental advantages,"authors note.

With self-driving vehicle technology rapidly advancing, many companies are turning to autonomous robots for 
the delivery process. The latest to join the trend is e-commerce giant Amazon. Following a successful eight-month test
 run in Snohomish County, Washington, the company’s Scout robots have been making the rounds of Irvine, 
California, since August6,2019.
The six-wheeled Scout, which wears Amazon‘s familiar Prime logo, is about the size of a large cooler with the
 capacity(容积）to carry small or medium-sized packages. The battery-powered vehicle, which moves at a regular
walking pace, has been programmed to avoid  pedestrians, animals  and unexpected things.
To quicken Scout’s development and bring it nationwide sooner , the company has created several detailed virtual
