Driving thrugh tunnels is a risky task as drivers need t lwer their speed, cntrl car distance and adapt t pr light, and the limited space may make them anxius, all making preventing accidents a public health challenge. Here, in a study, scientists shw that well-chsen backgrund music can help imprve rad safety.
"By cmparing the effects f different types f sund— slw VS. fast music, warning sunds such as alarms, and a vice reminding them t drive safely— n brain activity and physical behavir, we find the best slutin t keep drivers fcused," said prfessr Yanqun Yang, frm Fuzhu University, China.
The scientists studied backgrund sunds and music, but fcused n the length f a lng tunnel. With immersive (沉浸式的) VR, they reprduced a 5,100-meter-lng tunnel with traffic in bth directins and emplyed 40 yung peple t act as experimental drivers. When the experimenters wre the VR headset in an imitatin (模拟的) car, the researchers clsely mnitred and recrded the pressure n the pedals, the steering wheel’s angle, and driving speed.
Brain activity and heart rate variability(心率变异性) t shw changes in emtinal state, like stress and nervusness, were measured as well. Drivers drve fastest in respnse t fast music, and slwest t slw music. Cmparisns f heart rate variability— typically lw in peple wh are stressed— indicated that the drivers felt mst relaxed, with very little mental stress, and culd best cncentrate n driving when listening t slw music, which was similar t feedback frm drivers, f whm 63% chse slw music as their preferred backgrund. Cmparisns f the drivers’ brain waves indicated that slw music reduced nervusness in the drivers, while vice reminders, fast music, and alarms increased it.
“We find that slw music played as backgrund thrughut the tunnels, replaced by alarms nly at spts and times when the risk f accidents is the highest, is best t keep drivers attentive, at ease, and nt tired, while pushing them t be extra vigilant and fcused when they’re driving thrugh tunnels,” said researcher Dr Wei Lin. “But there’s still a lng way t g befre mre specific design and management recmmendatins can be prpsed.”
12.What makes the preventin f accidents challenging accrding t Paragraph 1?
