In mvies and bks, peple ften describe a decisive mment when they figure ut wh they are. Hwever, I never thught it actually happened in real life. I never expected t have a “mment” f my wn. When it arrived, mine was much mre pwerful than I culd have ever imagined.
During the spring f my junir year, my class watched a dcumentary called “The Invisible Children.” It was abut three cllege students wh take a trip t Africa and dcument their experience. At first the film was slightly humrus. Hwever, nce the grup arrived in nrthern Uganda, the md changed. They learned what the cnsequences f a 23-year war had been fr thusands f children. Sme had lst family and friends, while thers were caught by the ppsing frce and became child sldiers.
Befre lng, I was sbbing. I culdn’t believe these things were happening, yet at the same time I knew they were. I just hadn’t been paying attentin, fr in the past 17 years, I was blessedly prtected. When the mvie ended, I culdn’t get it ut f my head. Fr the next week, I was nt myself. Every bite f fd I tk I thught f Grace, the 15-year-ld wh had little t eat. When I went t bed, I pictured Sunday, the 14-year-ld by sleeping n a straw mat n the grund in a camp. My whle wrld shifted.
Since that day, I haven’t been able t picture my future in a way that desn’t invlve ging t Africa and ding what I can t help. Ultimately, this is why I decided t majr in engineering. With an engineering degree, my ptential fr change will be limitless. I will build wells and schls, and design irrigatin systems. Engineering is tugh, but I knw—in what Yeats called “my deep heart’s call”—that this is what I’m suppsed t d with my life.

Every year, travelers head t Suth America t be amazed at the vast glaciers, huge pen skies and high muntains. But at Omra Ethnbtanical Park n Tierra del Fueg, visitrs are encuraged t think small.
Tierra del Fueg, a remte island at the tip f Suth America, might ffer little in terms f animals and trees, but when it cmes t bryphytes (苔藓植物), it is amng the richest crners f the planet. In the area that cvers less than 0.01% f the Earth’s land surface, mre than 5% f the wrld’s bryphyte species is fund.
On entering the park, yu’re given a magnifying lens (放大镜). Guided by plant experts, yu are invited t get dwn n yur hands and knees t explre the little-knwn wrld f Tierra del Fueg’s “miniature frests” — the bryphytes that cver the rcks and trees. Fcus is key: as yu tipte thrugh the park, it is easy t miss r even step n them.
I wndered hw interesting msses culd be. But when I gt up clse, they started t cme t life. Shapes and clurs appeared that were nt visible t the naked eye. One plant was bright yellw, while anther was green with a bright red tip like a little hat.
One f the strangest plants is Old Man’s Beard, which lks like thin ndles and hangs ff the trees in webs. Accrding t my guide Lily Lewis, it plays an imprtant rle in the grwth f the frest, capturing nutrients (营养) and salts blwn in n the cean wind.
Old Man’s Beard is extremely vulnerable t pllutin, and has all but disappeared acrss much f the planet. But in Tierra del Fueg, where the air and rain are amng the cleanest n the planet, it grws wildly.
“The hand lens is yur entry pint int the wrld f the miniature frests,” Lewis said. “Lking thrugh a lens reminds yu that there are ther viewpints frm which we can see the wrld.”

Pushed by the rapid pace f tday’s fashin industry, it’s n wnder many clthes buyers find themselves with a “clset (衣橱) f regrets”. All the clthes that dn’t get wrn can hang heavy n a cnsumer’s mind until finally thrwn away. The truble is, “There’s n ‘away’ fr yur clthes,” says Maxine Bédat, authr f a 2021 bk, Unraveled: The Life and Death f a Garment, and an activist trying t change the industry’s wasteful ways.
A few statistics tell the stry. Fashin is respnsible fr abut 10% f the carbn emissins (排放物) that are tipping ur planet tward climate disaster. It prduces 20% f all industrial water pllutin. And it creates unimaginable quantities f rubbish, with abut a garbage truck f clthes burnt r buried in a landfill every secnd.
Althugh sme cmpanies have vluntarily tried t minimize their envirnmental and scial impact, little prgress has been made. S, a bill knwn as the New Yrk Fashin Act was intrduced. It wuld help cnsumers better understand the impact f their purchases and require every large multinatinal fashin name perating in the state t map their glbal supply chains, disclse their envirnmental and scial impacts, and set targets t cut emissins. Failure t meet the targets culd bring a 2% fine n annual turnver.
Hwever, the bill is pr-business, argues Ms. Bédat, wh wrked with the bill’s c-spnsrs t craft the measure, because it wuld level the playing field fr cmpanies t perate at the same envirnmental standards.
Ms. Bédat is lking beynd the “mre” f fashin t hw peple value their clthes. Her bk clses with a visin f a future when “we will lve ur clthes because we have seized cntrl f ur wn attentin and remved the nise in ur inbxes and n ur scial media channels that had taken ur attentin frm ur true needs and desires. And we bught them nt t fill ther hles in ur lives, but frm an aware and infrmed mindset.” That culd be just enugh t clear ut anyne’s “clset f regrets.”
    32. What des the underlined wrd “stry” in paragraph 2 refer t?
    A. Regrets left by ver-cnsumptin,B. Wrries generated by abandning clthes.
    C. Anxiety prduced by falling behind the trend.D. Prblems caused by the fast-paced fashin industry,
    33. What des the New Yrk Fashin Act aim t achieve?
    A. Bst sales fr fashin cmpanies.
    B. Regulate glbal fashin supply chains,
    C. Raise envirnmental awareness f buyers and prducers.
    D. Limit the expansin f the fashin cmpanies in New Yrk.
    34. What des Bédat think f the bill t the fashin cmpanies?
    A. Fair.B. Cstly.C. Cmplex.D. Demanding.
    35. Hw can the “clset f regrets” be reduced accrding t Bédat?
    A. Fllw trends and buy mre clthes.B. Value needs and make wise purchases.
    C. Plan budgets and shp ec-cnsciusly.D. Stress functinality and cut dwn n buying.
